Athletic Hall of Fame: Martha Grinnell ’85

Out on the cross-country course, no one could catch Martha Grinnell ’85. They still can’t — Ms. Grinnell’s course record of 19.40 over 3.3 miles still stands.

Ms. Grinnell, who went undefeated in dual meets over two years and was one of the most decorated runners in the school’s history, held course records at five schools by the time she graduated. As captain of Williston Northampton’s team, Ms. Grinnell set records for both the 1,500 meters (5:01.3) and 3,000 meters (10:32.4).

She was no slouch off the course, either. At graduation, Ms. Grinnell was presented with the White Blazer, as the top senior girl.

Ms. Grinnell continued her trail of success at Springfield College where she was named All-American in 1987, Northeast 10 champion in 1987 and 1988, and a national qualifier (in 1500 meters and 3000 meters) in 1988. She was also named to the All Eastern and All New England Conferences from 1986 to 1988 and was Springfield College’s Female Athlete of the Year four times. Ms. Grinnell was later inducted into the Springfield College Hall of Fame.

After college, Ms. Grinnell ran on the U.S. Pro World Championship Triathlon Team (1992-1995), was ranked third in U.S. at the 1994 Olympic distance triathlon, and was a member of 1994 Goodwill Games team. She placed seventh at the 1997 Hawaii Ironman World Championship, and second at U.S. Pro National Championship in 1994 and 1997. She also qualified for the first ever U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team Trials in 2000.

Ms. Grinnell returned to the Pioneer Valley to coach cross-country at Smith College and has also been the head coach of the National Junior Triathlon Team. She now coaches professionally through her company, Dynamic Training.

The Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, dinner, and reception will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013. Register to attend here.
