Green Cup Challenge: Week 1 Results!

For the last two weeks Sustainable life has been keeping track of the amount of energy each dorm has been using, and our first week results are in! Green Cup Challenge at Williston is not only a national competition with other schools to reduce the most energy, but also a competition between each dorm. The winner who reduces the most amount of energy by February 12th, will get a pizza party!

Two weeks ago, we recorded our baseline amounts of energy that the dorms had used (week 1). One Week Later, we took another measurement of energy (week 2). By subtracting Week 1 from Week 2, we were able to figure out the total amount of energy used throughout the week (week 1-2). The competition is to try to reduce the most  from the average of each dorm’s energy usage for the past three years. So, the weekly baseline is the average amount of energy that was used weekly (for January and February) from the past three years. To calculate each dorm’s progress, we take our total week 1-2 amount used, minus the baseline, and then divide that answer by the weekly baseline. This is simply calculating the percent change of the week’s recordings from the average. Moreover, Conant and Sawyer are in the lead, and reducing the most, with Hathaway in second. The Middle School, (which is a way of including some day students) has room for improvement, as well as Logan.

The Sustainable Life Club’s goal is to educate students and members of the community about their impact on the environment and what it means, helping students to establish a mindfulness, acceptance, and understanding of the environment. The Green Cup Challenge is one way we try to help the community learn more about their impact on the environment through energy conservation. The club has made several announcements reminding and informing the student body how to reduce energy, hot water, and heat. A few posters are around campus, reminding students to take the time to unplug the charger in their room or turn the light off in the bathroom once they leave. Also, stickers will be to put on light switch plates in the dorms to also serve as a reminder for students to turn off the lights. A recent video promoting Green Cup Challenge at Williston was just created with the help of Cade Zawacki ’15. Take time to watch Nick Pattison ’14 go on his hilarious crime fighting run throughout campus, saving energy and recyclable plastic all while keeping his pet plant as his handy side kick. Even if you are not part of a competing dorm, try to challenge yourself to reduce more and more every day. And if you are part of the competition, suit up, because, in the end, who would want to pass up on a free pizza party? Keep up the good work!
