NEML time!

The first round of the New England Math League will take place on Thursday, 10/19 from 2:35 to 3:35 in Schoolhouse 25.

Anyone at any level of math is encouraged to participate. The competition lasts 30 minutes and you begin any time before 3:10.

You may use a calculator.

Kicking off the 17-18 season!

The Math Team’s year started off strong with our first meeting which was held on Monday, 9/25. Here’s what we covered:

  1. Our next evening meeting will be on Monday, 10/30 from 6:15 to 7pm in Schoolhouse 25. Anyone at any level of math is welcome to attend!
  2. We talked about are team themes of “Learning by doing” and “Promoting a fun and joyous culture of math”.
  3. We spoke about the schedule for our year. We will have ~14 on campus competition and 3 off campus competitions. We will also meet at least once a month on a Monday evening.
  4. We worked on some NEML practice problems.
  5. We broke into groups to work on four tasks: A 10/4 assembly announcement, populating the hallway bulletin board, Middle School outreach, and designing a new team shirt. Group leaders were chosen.
  6. Everyone was reminded to check their email for updates.

Our first competition dates have been set!

The six New England Math League competitions are open to anyone at any level of math. No sign up or registration necessary. Just bring yourself, a pencil, and a calculator! All competitions take place in Schoolhouse 25. The competitions last 30 mins and must be started sometime in the first half hour of each listed time slot:

  • NEML 1: Thursday, 10/19/17, 2:35 to 3:35pm
  • NEML 2: Tuesday, 11/14/17, 3 to 4pm
  • NEML 3: Thursday, 12/14/17, 2:35 to 3:35pm
  • NEML 4: Thursday, 1/11/18, 2:35 to 3:35pm
  • NEML 5: Tuesday, 2/13/18, 2:35 to 3:35pm
  • NEML 6: Tuesday, 3/27/18, 2:35 to 3:35pm

A team of 4 students will be attending the WPI Invitational Mathematics Meet on Tuesday, 10/17/17!

Steven Wang Qualifies for the US Math Olympiad!

I am excited to announce that Steven Wang has qualified to participate in the USA Mathematical Olympiad! Steven competed in two highly competitive and prestigious competitions run by the Mathematical Association of America to end up in the top 500 math students in the nation!

Steven will sit for the 6-question, 8-hour competition on April 19th and 20th!

The 2016 – 2017 New England Math Season has come to close after 6 rounds.

Our overall league score of 145 earned us a 23rd place finish out of more than 150 teams!

Steven Wang Qualifies for the AIME!

Steven Wang, Williston’s own 9th grade math phenom just qualified for the prestigious American Invitational Mathematics Examination by virtual of scoring in the top 5% nationally on the AMC12 math competition!

Steven will sit for the 3-hour AIME competition on March 22nd, the results of which could propel him to the USA Mathematical Olympiad!

Big Competition Update!

There’s been lots of competitive math action lately! Lots more upcoming too!

TNEMLhe 6th and last (!) round of the New England Math League will be held on Tuesday, 3/21 from 2:30 to 3:30 in Schoolhouse 25. The competition lasts 30 minutes and you must begin before 3:10. You may use a calculator and any student at any level of math is welcome to participate! Just show up! No signup required!

MMATHs12 Williston Mathletes will be heading to Yale on Saturday, 4/1 to participate in the MMATHs competition! The two Williston teams of 6 will compete in individual and team rounds, as well as a round where they will work collaboratively with students from other schools!

Yesterday, on February 28th, 5 Williston Middle School students participated in the 7th and 8th grade level of the New England Math League! This is the first time the competition has run at Williston! Congratulations to these middle school mathlete pioneers!

Back on February, 15th, 28 Williston students participated in the AMC10/12 math competition! Students scores will be known in a few weeks! AIME here we come!

On February 13th, 19 Williston students participated in the 5th round of the New England Math League, earning a strong team score of 25!

Our overall team score of 120 puts us in 28th place out of over 130 teams from across New England! Complete round 5 league results can be viewed right here. Detailed individual results are online here (ask Mr. Seamon for the password). Congratulations to our current high-scoring students!

NEML-logoThe 7th & 8th grade level of the New England Math League competition will be held on Tuesday, 2/28 from 3:30 to 4:30 in WB!

Any student in 7th or 8th grade is welcome to compete!

NEMLThe league results were just updated to include round 4 of the New England Math League and with our running score of 95 we are holding strong at 28th out of 125 teams!

The 5th round of the New England Math League will be held on Monday, 2/13 from 2:35 to 3:35 in Schoolhouse 25. Anyone at any level of mathematics is welcome to participate! You may use a calculator, the competition lasts 30 minutes, and you must begin by 3:10.

AMC 8 Results (16-17)

AMC-lgoLast November, 23 Williston Middle Schoolers sat for the AMC 8 math competition.  The results are in!

Ilana Rapaport and Ruby McElhone Yates both earned gold medals with their high score of 14!

Isi Donnelly and Liam Coughlin both earned silver medals with their score of 13!

Andrew Cao earned a bronze medal with his score of 12!
