ROSSI CARLBERG, Lily Fleming Cram
Lily passed away March 2013. She was born in Chicago and grew up in Libertyville and Kenilworth, Illinois. She was a graduate of Northampton School for Girls and Northwestern University and attended graduate school at UCLA where she was a Teaching Assistant. In the late 60’s she taught English at the Universita’ di Roma.
Lily was proud to have worked as manager of the City Clerk’s Office in the City of Santa Barbara and in the City of Goleta. She believed that it was an honor to work with active and caring members of the community and mayors and council members. She cherished her involvement with them even after retirement. In 1987 she was named a “Local Hero” by the Santa Barbara Independent.
Membership in organizations included the University Club of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society, and the Santa Barbara Corral of the Westerners.
Even after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she continued to care for others with the disease.
She was preceded in death in 1999 by her husband Frederick William Carlberg (N6WP) with whom she will be interred at the Santa Barbara Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter Enrica Rossi Kurkulis, M.D., grand- daughters Gabriella and Isabella Kurkulis, and grandson Alex Kurkulis, of Chicago, Illinois; brother Norman L. Cram of Sonoma, California; sister Charlotte Phebe Cram Elsberry of New Haven, Connecticut.
A celebration of Lily’s life will be held at the Santa Barbara Cemetery Tuesday, March 19th at 11:00am, conducted by her brother, Reverend Norman Lee Cram, Jr.
Arrangements are being made by Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapel.
I remember Lily at NSFG as a kind, gentle, loyal classmate. She was a conscientious student and an impressive linguist. Her quiet, steadfast manner was endearing to all of us.
I knew Lily at NSFG, also at Northwestern, which I attended for i year, and then again in California when I visited her in Santa Barbara when I lived in San Francisco. She was a very sweet, caring, intelligent woman with guts! May she be happy.
