Michael P. Farmer ’74

Michael Patrick Farmer, 58, longtime resident of Amesbury, died Sunday afternoon June 23, 2013 at home with his loving family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was an amazing husband to his wife of 32 years, Gail Slosar-Farmer, and a devoted father to his children, Sean and Sheena. Born in Albany, N.Y., on March 12, 1955, he was one of seven children of Dorothea J. (Peterson) Farmer of Newburyport and the late Raymond B. Farmer. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in Troy, N.Y., Williston Academy of Easthampton, Mass., and attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

A self-employed carpenter, he was well respected for his professionalism and his quality craftsmanship. His son, Sean worked alongside him. Mike was an avid lifelong runner who was able to share his passion for the sport as a coach. He was a cross country and track coach at Amesbury High School for the last 20 years. Coaching gave him so much joy and he felt love from his ôrunning kidsö until the very end. During his years as a coach, he was a role model to many of his students, always there with words of encouragement and a sincere interest in their accomplishments.

In his youth, he enjoyed summering on Plum Island and was a life guard at Salisbury Beach for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and looked forward to a yearly Disney vacation, which had to be planned around his coaching schedule as he hated to miss a meet. He could always be counted on to offer a smirk and a sarcastic remark. He was also incredibly kind, patient, giving and supportive. Even if you thought you had failed at something, you could go to him and he would continue to encourage you. To say he will be sorely missed is an understatement, life for his family will not be the same without him.

In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by his son, Sean M. Farmer of Amesbury; his daughter, Sheena Farmer and husband, Roberson of Amesbury; his brother, Malachy Farmer and wife, Denise of Charlotte, N.C.; four sisters, Candace Farmer and husband Paolo, of New York, N.Y.; Deborah Farmer-Casey of Newburyport; Dorothea Farmer and husband, Jim of Bolton Landing, N.Y., and Catherine Pallotta and husband, Peter of Dublin, N.H.; one niece, several nephews, and many dear friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his brother, Christopher Farmer.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Michael Farmer to Amesbury High School Cross Country and Track & Field Program, C/O Emily Cullen, 32 Middle Road, Amesbury, MA 01913″

  1. I was saddened to learn of Mike’s passing. I remember him from our days at Williston. I am, however, filled with joy over the legacy he lives behind. My Bible tells me that there is nothing better for a man to enjoy than a good reputation. Mike certainly did that. My prayers are with his family at this challenging time. May the God of peace give comfort and strengthen you for the days to come.

  2. I have fond memories of Michael at Williston. His passion for running stands out along with quiet and elegant approach around people. Condolences to his family.
