Nicholas Veeder ’52

VeederNicholas Schermerhorn Veeder went to live with his Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday January 18, 2015 as he exited his home for the last time.

Nick was born in Schenectady NY on August 2, 1932 to Raymond Bradt Veeder and Emilie Battin Randall Veeder. He was educated in the Schenectady public schools and at Williston Academy, East Hampton, MA. His Associate Degree in Agriculture was earned at Long Island AG. and Tech, Farmingdale, NY. Further years of study were pursued at the University of Georgia, Athens where he met his wife to be Donna Clark Veeder. They were married in Nashville, TN on August 24 1957. Nick received his Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry and Economics in 1957 and his Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics in 1958 at UGA. Further post graduate work in Special Education was earned at College of St. Rose, Albany, NY.

The Veeders moved to Schenectady, NY after their graduations, then to Little Falls and on to Van Hornesville NY in 1958 where they started an organic farm. He was teacher of Agriculture at Owen D. Young Central School for many years, as well as teaching at other schools in and around the Mohawk Valley. He continued his formal teaching career at Herkimer BOCES in Special Education until his retirement. Nick loved teaching and delighted in his students. Indeed, he never really gave up teaching, taking every chance to use his enthusiasm to encourage students of all kinds until he died. He remembered the name of every student he ever taught. Nick developed an early interest in antiques and was a Picker/dealer for many years. He also enjoyed history, politics, organic gardening, investing and keeping up with the world’s stock markets, watching the reports every morning with breakfast.

He is survived by his artist wife Donna and their twin daughters Kristen Veeder Walker, MD her husband Andrew and Katrina Veeder Kreamer and her husband Carlos. The Veeders have three beautiful granddaughters: Tarra and Karen Walker and Emilie Lynn Kreamer of Palm City, FL. Nick was a loving husband; he adored his girls and was tremendously proud of their wonderful families. Nick’s sister, Ellen V. Robertson lives in Arlington, MA. Her children, Douglas Robertson and his wife, author Tracy Fern and their two daughters Samantha and Alexandra Robertson are of West Newton, MA. Ellen’s daughter Juliana Veeder Robertson is of Boston, MA. The eldest of Nicks surviving relatives is Dr. Elizabeth Veeder of Scotia, NY. An aunt, Nan Veeder lives in Stuart, FL.
