Henry Meagher, of Hyde Park, New York and Vero Beach, Florida passed away on Saturday, October 17th. He was 89 yrs old.
Henry was born on December 17, 1925 in Saranac Lake, NY to Florence and Raymond Meagher. He was a husband of 59 yrs to his loving wife Janice Crimmins Meagher and father to Debbie Stanley, Janice Trojan and Jennifer Convery. Henry served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He graduated from Williston Academy and then Williams College where he was a member of Chi Psi fraternity and made many life-long friends. Following Williams, he returned to Poughkeepsie, NY where he founded the Mechanical Construction Corporation while attending NYU Business School. Henry married Janice Crimmins in 1956 and they raised their three children in Hyde Park, New York.
Henry was an intelligent and hardworking business man. He had a successful life-long career, diligently building a mechanical contracting company, Mechanical Construction Corporation, with his brother Raymond Meagher. The company played a role in the construction of facilities at Stewart Newburgh Airport, the Culinary Institute of America, Vassar College, and various IBM facilities including their World Headquarters in Armonk, NY. In 1995, the business was sold to Tougher Industries of Albany, NY. He was a member of the Board of Directors of The Poughkeepsie Savings Bank, Standard Gage, and Schatz Federal Bearing.
Henry was an accomplished athlete particularly in tennis, squash, golf and skiing. At the time of his death, Henry was the longest living member of Poughkeepsie Tennis Club where he was Vice President for nine years and led the development of the indoor tennis facility. Henry was instrumental in forming the Poughkeepsie Squash Club which helped develop the sport in the Hudson Valley. Sharing his father’s passion for skiing, Henry supported the early growth of Mad River Glen ski resort in Waitsfield, VT. He and his brother Raymond built a family ski home at Mad River Glen enjoying many years with their families on the slopes.
After retiring, Henry and Janice spent more time at their John’s Island home in Vero Beach, FL . Henry was President of the South Village Condominium association. He was a member of the Athena Society of The Vero Beach Museum of Art, a sponsor of Riverside Theater Association and a member of the Eagle Society of Indian River Hospital. In addition, Henry was a member of Holy Cross church where he practiced his faith.
Henry is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife Janice Crimmins Meagher, his brother and sister-in-law Raymond and Bonnie Meagher of Millbrook, NY , children and son-in-laws Debbie and Jon Stanley of Mt Kisco, NY, Janice and Greg Trojan of LaCanada, CA, and Jennifer and Kevin Convery of Western Springs IL; grandchildren Nicholas and Chris Stanley, Emily and Andrew Trojan, Alex, Tyler and Charlie Convery. His sister and brother-in-law Paul and Jeanne Kane of Cobleskill, NY predeceased him.
