PennfieldJoan Farist Penfield Begg, formerly of Trumbull and Falls Village, died peacefully November 13, 2014 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford, CT at the age of 87.

Born in Bridgeport, CT on March 1, 1927 to Joel Farist Penfield and Ethel Logan Penfield., she was a longtime resident of the Nichols section of Trumbull, CT and Falls Village, CT.

She graduated from Northhampton School for Girls, Endicott College and earned a B.S. in Dental Hygiene from the University of Bridgeport. She has been a Member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Nichols, CT for nearly sixty years, a member of Salisbury Arsenal Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Associate member Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter, Milford, CT, The National Society Colonial Dames XVII, the Winthrop Fleet Chapter, Salisbury, CT, Past President National Society Magna Carta Dames, National Society Daughters of American Colonists, CT Chapter.

Stephen Clarke ’40

ClarkeStephen Clarke, 93, passed away January 29, 2015 at Bloom at Bluffton after a long illness.

Stephen was born in NYC 08/14/1921 to James Alfred and Anne Clarke.

Steve served in the Navy during WWII in the South Pacific as a plane commander (LtCmdr) flying the wounded from the islands back to the states.

Married in 1946 to Lillian Winifred Cole. They moved to Dalton, Ma in 1947 and had 3 sons Brian, James and David.

Nancy Day Trowern ’48

DayFormer Grosse Pointe Park resident Nancy Trowern, 84, died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, under hospice care at her home in Silver Spring, Md. She was surrounded by her husband, Howard “Joe” Trowern, their four children and her longtime caretaker, Rosario Martinez.

She was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Yonkers, N.Y., to Lt. Gen. and Mrs. Karl S. Day. She lived in Coronado, Calif., before moving to East Williston, N.Y., when she was 8. She attended the Northampton School for Girls in Massachusetts and Goucher College in Baltimore.

When she returned to East Williston, she met a 20-year-old backyard neighbor who had just returned from the war in Europe. In exchange for a ride to the beach, she offered to help him wash his car. That was the last car Joe Trowern ever washed. The couple married June 23, 1951.

Philip Barnhart ’44

Phillip BarnhartPhilip McKernon Barnhart, 89, a longtime resident of Somers, CT and Longmeadow, MA, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 7th, 2015 at Redstone Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Pittsfield, MA on July 27th, 1925 the only child of Philip S. Barnhart and Alice (McKernon) Barnhart.

Phil attended Williston Academy in Easthampton, MA. He went on to attend Bates College, and then Tufts University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business. He also participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program where he was honorably discharged in 1946. While at Tufts, Phil excelled in sports, as he was named MVP of the football team, was the High Scorer on the basketball team, and he also set a New England track record in the 440 yard dash.

Frederick Moore ’49

Frederick E. Moore 'Fred' '49Frederick Moore passed away on January 21, 2015.

He was a resident of La Puebla, NM since 1981. He was born in Pittsfield, MA in 1931 to parents, Harwood and Lauretta Moore, now deceased. He lived in Williamstown, MA until he moved to New Mexico. He graduated from Williston Academy, Easthampton, MA in 1949. He attended Nichols Junior College in Dudley, MA until he joined the 103rd Fighter Wing of the Ct. Air National Guard at Bradley Field in 1951.

He became disabled while in the service and was discharged in 1952. He returned to Williamstown, MA and started his own excavating company and later added heating oil delivery to it.

Harold Bohmer Jr. ’48

Harold Bohmer, Jr. '48Harold “Hal” Bohmer died Monday, December 29, 2014, at home in Tucson, Arizona surrounded by his loving family after a short illness.

His profession as a geologist brought him to Tucson for work during graduate school in the fifties and he later returned with his wife Cynthia to retire and bask in the beauty of the mountains.

Hal was born in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1930 and attended Williston Academy, now known as the Williston-Northampton School. He graduated from Amherst College following four years of service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Hal went on to complete both an M.S. Degree and a Ph.D. in geology at the University of Cincinnati where he was awarded two National Science Foundation Fellowships. Later, Hal was honored with membership in the scientific research society Sigma Xi.

Charles Alling ’42

AllingCharles T. Alling, 91, who resided at Beatrice Hover Assisted Living in Longmont, died November 22, 2014 at Balfour Skilled Nursing in Louisville. Charles was born on August 29, 1923 in New Haven, CT to Truman and Mildred (Kohler) Alling.

Charles graduated from Williston Academy in Easthampton, MA in 1942 and later attended Paul Smith’s College in Paul Smiths, NY from 1949-1950. Charles served with the United States Navy.

Charles married Louise Holmsten in 1950 in Paul Smiths, NY. Charles moved to Boulder in October of 1991 from Paul Smiths, NY.

Charles was a draftsman and project manager in non-residential construction, retiring in 1986.

Charles was a volunteer for Boulder County Parks and Open Spaces and was a volunteer ambassador at Denver International Airport.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, wife Louise and son David Alling.

Charles is survived by his son Steven Alling of Ridgewood, NJ, daughters Susan Alling of Longmont, CO, Karen Waters of Boulder, CO and Maria LeMaire of West Hampton Beach, NY and daughter-in-law Cindy Alling of Longmont, CO along with his grandchildren.

Alice Williamson Sweeney ’44

WilliamsonAlice Williamson Sweeney, 87, a resident of Annapolis since 1970, died at home on November 25 after suffering a stroke.

An Army brat, she was born in Washington, DC, and was an alumna of the Northampton School for Girls and Smith College.

She was the widow of retired Army Colonel Robert L. Sweeney, Jr., to whom she was married for 54 years prior to his death in 2005.

She was a lifelong volunteer to military, medical, and scouting causes. Her other interests included bridge, puzzles, and shopping.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters Marianne Cleary and Louise Bassett. She is survived by children Anne Sweeney, Robert (Cindy) Sweeney III, Barbara Sweeney, and Susan Sweeney, all of Annapolis; Mary (John) Koger of Dedham, MA; and Laura (Geoff) Stricker of Falls Church, VA; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

John Paul Rutherford Falconer ’43

John FaulconerJohn Paul Rutherford (Rudd) Falconer died peacefully at his Big Rock Road oasis on July 21, 2014, in his 89th year.

Rudd was born in Seneca Falls, New York on Aug. 24, 1925. He was the eldest child of Navy Captain Jonathan Paul and Eloise (Brown) Falconer and the grandson of one of the first woman doctors in New York State, Dr. C. Anna Brown. He grew up in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York. Cayuga Lake was his stomping grounds and perhaps the reason he was most happy living by large bodies of water. Fresh or salty, it didn’t matter, as long as he could sail on it or catch fish from it.

Active, vibrant, and expressing everyday appreciations to her family even on her last evening, Sylvia was full of life. People remember her as beautiful, self-deprecating, entertaining, a wonderful listener, graceful, and always elegantly dressed in clothes she made for herself. She was a source of positive energy that drew people to her.
