Williston Students to Sing at Fenway

As they stroll around the park, taking in the sights and sounds of the holiday season, visitors to Fenway Park on November 30 might also perk their ears at renditions of Williston Northampton favorites, “O Williston” and “Sammy.”

As part of the Fenway Park Holiday Bash, a winter wonderland-themed event on Friday night, 14 Widdigers and Caterwaulers will perform an hour of Christmas carols and group favorites.

“We Will Remember Al”: A Yearbook Dedication

The following dedication by Molly Newton was originally published in The Williston Northampton School 2007 Log.

Please and thank you, two simple little words we all could spell by third grade. two simple little words many of us forgot sometime in those long years between third grade and our arrival at Williston; two simple words that Al Lavalle constantly reminded us to say, and never let us get away with forgetting.

Remembering Al Lavalle

Dear Williston Community,

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I report the passing of a highly respected and beloved member of our community. Al Lavalle, a 13-year employee in our Physical Plant Department, died on Sunday, November 25 after a long battle with colon cancer.

One of Al’s positions on campus was working in The Cage in the Athletic Center. It was there that he had a tremendous impact on Williston students and acquired such a great deal of respect that the yearbook was dedicated to him in 2007. Mr. Lavalle, a lover of athletics and a major presence in local youth sports leagues, bestowed life lessons on Williston students about integrity and treating others with respect. His positive effect on the lives of those in this community will long be felt.

Obama Wins Four More Years

by Cameron Hill ’15

After a presidential election season ridden with memorable, often hysterical
moments (Clint Eastwood’s now famous soliloquy to an empty chair comes to
mind), and an extremely close race, Barack Obama was reelected President of the
United States on Tuesday November 6, 2012. He defeated the Republican nominee,
the former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul
Ryan. Going into Tuesday, many analysts expected days of ballot recounts and
lawsuits. It was even suggested that neither candidate would be able to reach
the total of 270 electorate votes needed to secure an election.

However, it quickly became apparent that Obama was the likely victor. According
to CNN, Romney would have needed the electoral votes of battleground states
Virginia, Ohio, and Florida, along with those of the traditionally red states he
was likely to win, to obtain a victory. All three of those states were
eventually won by Obama.

Williston’s Mock Election Final Results

Just before the Long Weekend 214 Williston Northampton students cast ballots in a mock election.  This activity was part of the V.O.T.E.S. (Voting Opportunities for Teenagers in Every State) program run by Northfield Mount Hermon School.  More than 54,000 high school students in 63 schools all over the U.S. participated (although because of Storm Sandy, no New Jersey schools were able to turn in results).  Students were asked to vote for a Presidential candidate and to respond to several issue questions.

Northfield announced the results Sunday; they’re listed below, along with Williston’s results.

Thanks to everyone who participated!

Hurricane Sandy Updates

For ongoing updates on Hurricane Sandy, visit the Community Alerts page.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to impact Western Massachusetts between 2:00 p.m. today (Monday, October 29) and tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. (Tuesday, October 30).

We will be meeting with all students who are currently on campus in the Birch Dining Commons at 11:30 a.m. this morning. After that meeting, students will be asked to remain in the dorms that are open over the Fall Break. We have food and water and we’ll be serving dinner in each of those dorms during the storm. Residential faculty are supervising.

We are anticipating the possible loss of power on campus, but we will be working to keep our website and Facebook page updated regularly as the storm progresses. If you have questions, you may call (413) 529-3000 or email David Koritkoski, Assistant Dean of Students.

Thank you for your part in helping to keep our community safe.

Sincerely,

Robert W. Hill III

It is an incredible reminder of care and compassion when you are surrounded by so many giving and generous people. Welcome, Trustees!

Dear Williston Community,

As many of you know, today marks the beginning of our Fall Trustee Weekend, and so we will be welcoming members of the Board to our meals, classrooms, and sidelines.  Please feel free to introduce yourself to any Trustee whom you see—they are all eager to talk about Williston.

For students: Trustees are alumni, past parents, present parents, and others who agree to serve on Williston’s Board and who literally, “hold the trust.”  In other words, the Board of Trustees works with administration of the school to ensure that we are Mission directed and future-oriented.   Board members are incredibly generous with their time (they are volunteers) and their presence on campus signifies only a part of the many hours they devote over the course of the year to committee work and discussions—all in the service of making Williston the best school we can be.

I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful fall day, and, once again, please extend a warm Willy welcome to our guests.

With Purpose, Passion, and Integrity,

R.Hill
