Next Writers’ Open Houses
The Willistonian holds frequent Writers’ Open Houses for all students interested in writing for our school newspaper’s new website.
Have a great idea that you’d like to see written, and share with your friends and family? Don’t have any ideas, but would love an assignment? Interested in becoming a published writer, with your own news byline? Then this is a great way to get involved at Williston! Being published like this looks great on resumes and college applications, and just coming to our Writers’ meetings often gets you candy.
All meetings are held in Room 30 on the English floor, during activities period after classes. If you can’t make either of these meetings, but would still like to write/pitch an idea, please feel free to send the Editor in Chief an email.
The Chinese Activity Fair is Sunday night, December 2nd at 5-6:30 p.m. in the Cox Room and Parent Association Room.
There will be food, prizes, Mahjong (a chinese board game) and a lot of other interesting activities in Cox Room. There will be popcorn and a movie showing in the Parent Association Room. Chris Couchon our chef from the dining hall will specially prepare a very traditional and precious Chinese recipe—it will be really, really good!
The Chinese students all have prepared for a long time. So everybody should go to dining hall on Sunday and stop by the Cox Room. Have fun and enjoy the party!

An outbreak of fungal meningitis. That’s the problem that University of Massachusetts Professor of Chemistry Dr. Scott Auerbach asked AP Integrated Science students to solve when he visited The Williston Northampton School on November 15.
As the students settled into groups of three and four, Auerbach outlined the grim statistics: 438 cases in 19 states with a death total of at least 32.
“Today’s goal is to understand the role science plays in making sense of understanding this outbreak,” Auerbach said. “Your job is to be Beth Bell, the director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.”
This was one problem that the students weren’t going to be able to solve by looking in the back of their textbook—and not being able to immediately find the solution is the point. When Science Department Chair Bill Berghoff put together the pilot program for the integrated science class, his aim was to encourage collaboration and scientific creative thinking.
“I’m really big into inquiry-based learning,” he said. “You have to do experiments, you have to do activities, to really understand what’s going on.”

As they stroll around the park, taking in the sights and sounds of the holiday season, visitors to Fenway Park on November 30 might also perk their ears at renditions of Williston Northampton favorites, “O Williston” and “Sammy.”
As part of the Fenway Park Holiday Bash, a winter wonderland-themed event on Friday night, 14 Widdigers and Caterwaulers will perform an hour of Christmas carols and group favorites.
Janine Norton and I are participating in the Open Studios this weekend at One Cottage Street. We’ll have the studio open and work for sale Friday, 12-5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 12-5 p.m.
I’ve got a new group of images that I’ve been working on that are images from the last photo expedition to Italy and they’re utilizing a process that I teach to the Photo Four class.
