The program accepts a maximum of two students from high schools across the country and takes place May 18-21.<\/p>\n<p>Williston\u2019s English Department Head Sarah Sawyer said the program is \u201cexcellent\u2014and selective.\u201d Williston students have gone every year since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s Sophia\u2019s second time attending the conference; she was there last year. \u201cI loved it. I am so excited and happy to be going back,\u201d she said. \u201cYou are surrounded by people who love to read and write. It was a liberating experience for me. The conference is like an oasis where I can just focus on writing and reading.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Sophia recently won a Scholastic Art and Writing Award (a Regional Silver Key in Humor) for her work\u00a0\u201cBooger Loser.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She enjoys writers who reflect the coming-of-age experience: Tobias\u00a0Wolfe, David Leviathan, and Sherman Alexie. She is currently reading short stories by fellow humorist David Sedaris.<\/p>\n<p>When she takes up the pen, she writes creative nonfiction. \u201cI like writing about my own experiences, but adding extra details to make it more interesting,\u201d she said. &#8220;I also like writing poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_153\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-153 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2017\/03\/harrison-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"harrison\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2017\/03\/harrison-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2017\/03\/harrison-768x1146.jpg 768w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2017\/03\/harrison-686x1024.jpg 686w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2017\/03\/harrison-168x250.jpg 168w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2017\/03\/harrison.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-153\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harrison Winrow &#8217;18, seen here performing in The Comedy of Errors, will attend the conference for the first time this May.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It will be Harrison Winrow\u2019s first visit to the conference. \u201cI am very excited to work with some passionate students and professionals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison enjoys Billy Collins and Sherman Alexie \u201cto stir me up,\u201d and added that Dave Eggers is his favorite author.<\/p>\n<p>When Harrison writes, he drifts toward poetry. \u201cI just love the oft-rhythmic, lingering, romantic language, and the application as a visual art in structure, the raw emotion or cryptic narrative, and the strength\u2013the implied strength from the words unwritten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the freedom of writing,\u201d he continued. \u201cJust as I like the freedom of speaking: gusto, bravado, intonation, a reflection of self.
