Awards were given in six subjects: History and Global Studies, English, Arts, Science, Math, and Language. A link to photographs of the event will be posted soon.\u00a0The awards were as follows:<\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>HISTORY &amp; GLOBAL STUDIES<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The <strong>A. L. H<\/strong><strong>EPWORTH <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE<\/strong>, honoring a legendary history teacher, Dean of Students, and tennis coach, 1926-1973, is awarded to those students who have done excellent work in the United States History course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For improvement &#8211; ELIN BLOMQUIST<\/li>\n<li>For accomplishment &#8211; TIMOTHY \u201cTIM\u201d FAY<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>H<\/strong><strong>ERVEY <\/strong><strong>L. S<\/strong><strong>MITH<\/strong><strong>, J<\/strong><strong>R<\/strong><strong>., P<\/strong><strong>RIZE<\/strong>, established by a member of the faculty from 1939 to 1946, is awarded annually for the highest achievement in the Modern European History course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ROBERT \u201cROBBY\u201d HILL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more-->The <strong>E<\/strong><strong>DWARD <\/strong><strong>M. P<\/strong><strong>RIZES <\/strong>are awarded for superior work in elective courses in the History and Global Studies Department. These students earned 22nd place in the National Finals, the highest place ever earned by Williston. In addition, we want to note that three of the six units earned 18th, 13th and 12th in the first round. Finally, we ask that the Unit VI team of Sophie Carellas, Gerry Gao, Gabe Moon, Katie Most, and Erika Sasaki who earned 5th place in the first round and 16th overall, to come forward to present their National Finals trophy to Head of School, Robert Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>E<\/strong><strong>DWARD <\/strong><strong>L. O&#8217;B<\/strong><strong>RIEN <\/strong><strong>1916 P<\/strong><strong>RIZE <\/strong>is awarded to a student who has achieved high standing in social studies courses and displayed an active interest in American Law and Politics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MADISON FULCHER-MELENDY<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>D<\/strong><strong>AG <\/strong><strong>H<\/strong><strong>AMMARSKJ\u00d6LD <\/strong><strong>H<\/strong><strong>ISTORY <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE<\/strong>, given by an alumnus of the Class of 1955 in honor of the Nobel Laureate and Secretary General of the United Nations, 1953-1961, is awarded to that student who has written the best lengthy research paper on some phase of international relations or diplomatic history:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>JORDAN SANSONE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>M<\/strong><strong>ARTIN <\/strong><strong>T<\/strong><strong>ANANBAUM <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE<\/strong>, honoring the father of Minnie Tananbaum Lomeo, Class of 1966, is awarded to that student who has combined an appreciation for the study of religion, philosophy, or ethics with responsible social activities within and beyond the Williston community.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NATALIE FONTENOT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>G<\/strong><strong>EORGE AND <\/strong><strong>F<\/strong><strong>RANK <\/strong><strong>C<\/strong><strong>AREW <\/strong><strong>D<\/strong><strong>EBATING <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE <\/strong>was established by brothers, members of the class of 1882, and is awarded for excellence in debate. Originally the prize was given to the winners of the annual Adelphi vs. Gamma Sigma debate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>JOSHUA \u201cJOSH\u201d CALIANOS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>ENGLISH<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Prizes honoring <strong>A<\/strong><strong>SAHEL <\/strong><strong>L<\/strong><strong>YMAN <\/strong><strong>W<\/strong><strong>ILLISTON<\/strong>, Class of 1852, trustee, and nephew of the founder, are offered for excellence in English.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grade 9 &#8211; NATHANIEL \u201cNAT\u201d MARKEY<\/li>\n<li>Grade 10 &#8211; MADELEINE \u201cMADDIE\u201d ELSEA<\/li>\n<li>Grade 11 &#8211; MADISON FULCHER-MELENDY<\/li>\n<li>Grade 12 &#8211; TOMASZ PALUCHOWSKI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A prize honoring <strong>G<\/strong><strong>ILBERT <\/strong><strong>F. K<\/strong><strong>ENNEDY<\/strong>, Class of 1891 and Williston trustee, for the best junior term paper.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SOPHIA SCHAEFER<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>H<\/strong><strong>AZELDINE <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE<\/strong>, in memory of Myrtle Elizabeth Hazeldine and her husband, Harry Newton Hazeldine class of 1921, is awarded each year to the student who has consistently improved the caliber of his or her written work both in English classes and for the student newspaper, <em>The Willistonian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ELEANOR \u201cELLIE\u201d WOLFE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>S<\/strong><strong>IDNEY <\/strong><strong>N<\/strong><strong>ELSON <\/strong><strong>M<\/strong><strong>ORSE <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZES<\/strong>, in memory of a member of the Class of 1886 who taught at Williston from 1890 to 1928, are awarded each year to the <strong>two students <\/strong>recording the best work in senior English.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RIDA KAREEM<\/li>\n<li>JORDAN SANSONE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>B<\/strong><strong>ARD <\/strong><strong>C<\/strong><strong>OLLEGE <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE FOR <\/strong><strong>C<\/strong><strong>RITICAL <\/strong><strong>W<\/strong><strong>RITING <\/strong>is offered to that student \u201cwho wrote the outstanding paper or essay during his or her senior year\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PARKER \u201cBINA\u201d SWEET<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>NTONIO <\/strong><strong>G<\/strong><strong>IACOMINI<\/strong><strong>, C<\/strong><strong>LASS OF <\/strong><strong>1931 W<\/strong><strong>RITING <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE <\/strong>is awarded to that freshman who has demonstrated consistent excellence in his or her written work over the course of the entire year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ABBY SELTZER<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>H. Mrs. Hepworth taught piano to four decades of Williston students beginning in the 1920s.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>GABRIELLE \u201cGABBY\u201d RECORD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>B<\/strong><strong>ARBARA <\/strong><strong>K. A<\/strong><strong>NSBACHER <\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>WARD<\/strong>, established by Henry Ansbacher, Class of 1988, in memory of his mother, is awarded to a member of the graduating class who has maintained a high level of academic achievement and who has made a significant contribution to the music program. The student receiving this award is eligible to compete for a science scholarship.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HANZHANG \u201cDERRICK\u201d ZHAO<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Alumni Association of <strong>R<\/strong><strong>ENSSELAER <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>OLYTECHNIC <\/strong><strong>I<\/strong><strong>NSTITUTE <\/strong>offers a medal to an eleventh grader who has achieved excellence in mathematics and science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[Note: If student applies and enrolls, the official Rensselaer Medal will be presented during honors convocation in the fall of the first year at Rensselaer.] <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WANGCHEN \u201cSHIRLEY\u201d ZHOU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>HE <\/strong><strong>Y<\/strong><strong>VES <\/strong><strong>C<\/strong><strong>OUDERC <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>HYSICS <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZES <\/strong>honor a teacher of science and music, 1961-1979.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For greatest achievement in Physics \u2013 NATHANIEL \u201cNAT\u201d MARKEY<\/li>\n<li>For greatest improvement in Physics \u2013 JAMES WHITE<\/li>\n<li>For greatest achievement in Advanced Physics \u2013 TOMASZ PALUCHOWSKI<\/li>\n<li>For greatest improvement in Advanced Physics \u2013 JOSEPH \u201cJO JO\u201d CARBONE 10<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Class of 1891 offers two prizes for excellence in Chemistry, honoring <strong>P<\/strong><strong>ROFESSOR <\/strong><strong>F<\/strong><strong>RANK <\/strong><strong>A<\/strong><strong>DRIAN <\/strong><strong>L<\/strong><strong>EACH<\/strong>, who taught Chemistry and Biology and served as Director of Athletics, 1892-1902.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chemistry \u2013 ZEYU \u201cSTEVEN\u201d WANG<\/li>\n<li>AP Chemistry \u2013 MOLLY ZAWACKI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>E<\/strong><strong>ARL <\/strong><strong>N<\/strong><strong>ELSON <\/strong><strong>J<\/strong><strong>OHNSTON <\/strong><strong>P<\/strong><strong>RIZE<\/strong>, established by the Class of 1953, is awarded annually for the best improvement in Chemistry. Mr. Johnston taught science from 1918 to 1954, and at times conducted the choir and advised <em>The Willistonian <\/em>and <em>The Log<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EMMA GOULD<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>MATHEMATICS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Mathematical Association of America holds a series of contests each year to determine the strongest mathematical students in the country. The winners of these year-long competitions represent the United States in an International Olympiad. The first of these contests is called the American Mathematics Contest. The student who scores highest at each participating school is named the winner at that school. This prize was awarded earlier this year though we would like to have them stand and be recognized for this achievement. The award is made in alternate years to the member of the junior class who attains the highest grades in English or French. David H.
