After hearing from witnesses in the case, the juries had to decide who was at fault, the plaintiff (Lee Cavanaugh, the coffee drinker) or the defendant (Cup of Joe, the business who sold the beverage).<\/p>\n<p>According to Middle School History and Global Studies Teacher Andrew Syfu, jurors were tasked with deciding if the d<span class=\"s1\">efendant was negligent from a legal perspective, and if the shop was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">strictly liable for the injuries sustained by Mr. Cavanaugh.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After careful deliberation, juries came to divergent conclusions, Mr. Syfu said. &#8220;However, all juries believed both sides were at fault for the coffee spillage.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">One jury ruled in favor of the defendant (Cup of Joe), and the other two juries ruled in favor of the plaintiff (Lee Cavanaugh).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2016\/12\/IMG_2020-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A snowball fight that followed was &quot;a very civil fight,&quot; according to Mr. Syfu.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2016\/12\/IMG_2020-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2016\/12\/IMG_2020-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2016\/12\/IMG_2020-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2016\/12\/IMG_2020-250x188.jpg 250w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/academic-news\/files\/2016\/12\/IMG_2020.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A snowball fight that followed was &#8220;a very civil fight,&#8221; according to Mr. Syfu.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mr. Syfu explained the academic significance of the mock trial\u00a0as a way to give students a<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0better understanding of our\u00a0legal system, while increasing confidence in critical thinking, reasoning, and presentation skills. &#8220;The experience also helps students understand the role of government in resolving disputes,&#8221; he added. Finally, the students are asked to assess how their team worked together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As an amusing aside, after the first day of witness testimony, students left Whitaker-Bement and blew off a little steam by hurling snowballs at one another.
