these photographs.\u00a0 William Rittase (1894-1968) was an American photographer based in Philadelphia.\u00a0\u00a0 His work is now prized by collectors.\u00a0 Rittase frequently specialized in railroad and industrial subjects, but on several occasions in the 1930s and &#8217;40s, he was hired by both Williston Academy and Northampton School for Girls to produce catalog photography, thereby giving a distinctive look to the schools&#8217; marketing materials of the time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2013\/05\/track-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1930\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2013\/05\/track-05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2013\/05\/track-05.jpg 584w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2013\/05\/track-05-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Rittase&#8217;s work is often characterized by dramatic lighting and high contrast between light and shadow.\u00a0\u00a0 Billowing clouds are one of his signatures.\u00a0\u00a0Most of the Archives&#8217; Rittase photographs\u00a0survive as gallery prints in which the image measures 13.75&#8243; x 10.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/baseball-01a-warm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4229\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/baseball-01a-warm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/baseball-01a-warm.jpg 777w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/baseball-01a-warm-233x300.jpg 233w, sizes=\"(max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><\/a>But Rittase was not above a measure of artistic chicanery.\u00a0 Former Williston photography teacher Bob Couch &#8217;50 has observed that the same clouds appear in multiple photographs.\u00a0 And consider the preceding photograph \u2014 by any standard, a brilliant action shot.\u00a0 But think about the vantage point.\u00a0 To get this angle, Rittase would have had to to have been standing on a ladder in the infield.<a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/football-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4234\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/football-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/football-15.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/football-15-300x215.jpg 300w, 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a>And no, Rittase wasn&#8217;t using a telephoto lens.\u00a0 In fact, he favored a large-format camera, that used 4 x 5&#8243; film or larger, had a fixed lens, and weighed many pounds.\u00a0 So the wonderful photo above was, in fact, staged, even choreographed.\u00a0 The photographer is apparently sitting on the ground just a few feet from the blockers&#8217; knees.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/football-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4232\" years in the Williston Northampton Dance Studio, intended to inspire young choreographers to seek ideas for movement in unusual places.<\/p>\n<p><a it&#8217;s a rare image of a successful squeeze play at the plate.\u00a0 But Rittase would have had to stand only a few yards from home plate to get it, unless, of course, he was simultaneously playing shortstop and carrying the camera.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/swimming01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4249\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/swimming01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/swimming01.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/swimming01-300x217.jpg 300w, 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a>One would be hard put to explain what is happening here.\u00a0 But in 1938, when this was taken, Williston was among a tiny number of schools that had an indoor pool at all.\u00a0 Competitive swimming wouldn&#8217;t arrive for another decade.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s a great &#8220;see-what-Williston&#8217;s-got&#8221; catalog shot, enhanced by Rittase&#8217;s use of the light streaming through the windows on the right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/squash01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4248\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/squash01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"722\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/squash01.jpg 722w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/squash01-217x300.jpg 217w, dramatic lighting than in the game.\u00a0 The light source is an artificial flood on the squash court floor; Rittase would have been shooting from the spectator&#8217;s window above the court.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/ns-sports-06a-warm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4243\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/ns-sports-06a-warm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"774\" height=\"1000\" well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/ns-sports-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4240\" education.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 70 years after the fact, it is challenging to interpret what is going on here.\u00a0 Great Rittase-y clouds, though!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/skiing-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4245\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/skiing-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"773\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/skiing-02.jpg decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4239\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/hockey-07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/hockey-07.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/04\/hockey-07-300x234.jpg 300w,
