(As always, please click images to enlarge.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Consider why people keep scrapbooks.\u00a0 Are a they a repository for the ephemera of one&#8217;s life, <span class=\"st\">souvenirs of things that seemed important at the time?\u00a0 If so, then they can be unique windows into individuals&#8217; lives, in a particular place, at a particular time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among the many student scrapbooks and albums held by the Williston Northampton Archives, that of George Wardman, class of 1889, is among the older and more comprehensive.<\/p>\n<p>George Benjamin Wardman entered Williston in the fall of 1885, as a member of the class of 1888.\u00a0 Born in Cheyenne, WY, April 20, 1869, he was a resident of New Orleans, LA, according to the 1886 <em>Annual Catalogue<\/em>.\u00a0 How he found his way from the deep South to Easthampton is not known.\u00a0 To further confuse matters, his academic transcript, in contradiction to the <em>Catalogue, <\/em>claims he resided in Pittsburgh.\u00a0 In any event, he arrived in the fall of 1885, bringing with him a leather scrapbook.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/10\/l25-cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4466 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/10\/l25-cover-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"George B. Wardman scrapbook.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The book, now in fragile condition, measures 12 x 9 inches, bound in buckram-covered boards with a leather spine.\u00a0 Inside the front flyleaf is a penciled inscription: &#8220;George Wardman.\u00a0 Christmas 1884.\u00a0 Mama.&#8221;\u00a0 George appears to have saved the book for something special; he did not begin adding to it until the winter of 1886.\u00a0 The first pages contain a pasted collage of items from the 1886 <em>Annual Catalogue, <\/em>including a rosters of the faculty and George&#8217;s classmates, his first year curriculum in the Scientific Department, and what must have been the major news of the time, the appointment of a new Principal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4431\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4431\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/10\/wardman-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4431 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/10\/wardman-2.jpg\" alt=\"George B. Lew Wallace, had been published in 1880 and had quickly become a best-seller, spawning stage adaptations of all kinds.\u00a0 This presentation of scenes was probably by a touring company appearing at the Easthampton Town Hall.<a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/10\/l19-ben-hur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4424 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/archives\/files\/2019\/10\/l19-ben-hur.jpg\" alt=\"George B.
