{"id":837,"date":"2014-10-30T12:55:23","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T17:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/artsspotlight\/?p=837"},"modified":"2014-10-20T15:58:48","modified_gmt":"2014-10-20T20:58:48","slug":"grubbs-gallery-presents-david-marshall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/artsspotlight\/2014\/10\/30\/grubbs-gallery-presents-david-marshall\/","title":{"rendered":"Grubbs Gallery Presents David Marshall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/artsspotlight\/files\/2014\/10\/image001.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-854\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/artsspotlight\/files\/2014\/10\/image001-300x235.jpeg\" alt=\"David Marshall\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/artsspotlight\/files\/2014\/10\/image001-300x235.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/artsspotlight\/files\/2014\/10\/image001-250x196.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/artsspotlight\/files\/2014\/10\/image001.jpeg 434w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On Display: November 1 \u2013 December 18<br \/>\nReception: Saturday, November 15, 1:30-3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The work of <a href=\"http:\/\/davidmarshall.us\/index.html\">David Marshall<\/a> will be on display in the Grubbs Gallery from November 1 until December 18, when Williston Northampton School closes for winter break.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Marshall, a Northampton-based artist, describes the act of painting as \u201crewarding because of its moments of heightened awareness and its quiet contemplation of nature\u2019s beauty.&#8221; His paintings\u2014of landscapes, figures, and still lifes\u2014aim to capture fleeting light in the moment, how objects melt into each other, and how they separate from their surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf one paints the parts, they rarely add up to produce a unified whole,\u201d he wrote in a statement about his work. \u201cSubtle changes in light\u2014even in a studio with natural light\u2014dramatically affect the overall tonality of a subject. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>For the Grubbs Gallery show, Mr. Marshall collected some of his most recent and favorite work with paintings that explore two themes: nude figures in landscapes, including smaller studies, and the ever-changing nature of water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Painting moving water is something I\u2019ve tried on and off over the years but never with much dedication,&#8221; Mr. Marshall noted. &#8220;I decided to work on my ability to paint water (specifically some of the smaller rivers in Chesterfield) as the snow began to melt last spring&#8230;I did have a few paintings in the area of the Chesterfield Gorge where I might have captured an effect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Marshall has studied panting at the Massachusetts College of Art, Art Students League, and Brooklyn College, where he earned an M.F.A. under the tutelage of Lennart Anderson. He\u2019s had both solo and group shows in galleries in New York City, Philadelphia, and throughout New England.
