After coaching for four years at Cushing Academy, Ms. Pickrell came to Williston, where she led the girls field hockey team until 2011. In the last 30 years, she had a 222-198-47 record (247-227-53 overall), including finishing fourth among 31 teams in the Western New England Prep School League in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the thing that\u2019s most rewarding, and I think you\u2019ll all agree, is when you\u2019re able to stay in touch with players that you\u2019ve had and they tell you about their lives and the impact,\u201d Ms. Pickrell said. \u201cIt\u2019s not necessarily who won the game, but what kinds of things they learned from each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In remarks during the event, Robin Chandler, director of athletics at The Hotchkiss School, praised Ms. Pickrell, who is also Williston\u2019s assistant head of school, for her deep commitment and for having \u201cset the bar high\u201d for her team.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/athletics\/files\/2015\/04\/pickrell1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1736\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/athletics\/files\/2015\/04\/pickrell1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"pickrell1\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/athletics\/files\/2015\/04\/pickrell1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/athletics\/files\/2015\/04\/pickrell1-250x150.jpg 250w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/athletics\/files\/2015\/04\/pickrell1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cI feel so very honored to have shared the field with her during our 17 years of competition,\u201d Ms. Chandler said. \u201cAnn\u2019s teams modeled Ann; they worked tirelessly, they played with tremendous heart, and win or lose, they did so with exceptional sportsmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony came as a surprise to Ms. Pickrell, who thought she had stopped by the Dodge Room to greet her former coaching colleagues during their lunch break.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to look around the room and see many faces that I\u2019ve known for years and people that I\u2019ve coached against and with, it\u2019s a full circle,\u201d she said, after a standing ovation in her honor. \u201cI said when I stepped away that it wasn\u2019t about me and it\u2019s still not about me, it\u2019s about the hundreds of students that we\u2019ve had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the ceremony, Ms. Pickrell was presented with a plaque, which will be placed at the base of a tree planted in her honor on Gabraith Field, near the varsity field hockey field.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calling her \u201cthe definition of a class act,\u201d \u201ca great coach,\u201d and a woman with an \u201cextraordinary career,\u201d the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council field hockey coaches honored one of Williston Northampton\u2019s longest tenured coaches during their annual meeting on Tuesday.
