{"id":683,"date":"2019-12-17T22:45:53","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T03:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/boyshockey\/?p=683"},"modified":"2019-12-17T22:45:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T03:45:53","slug":"penguins-trip-up-wildcats-late-game-surge-williston-garners-first-win-versus-asl-highlanders-keep-wildcats-in-the-lowlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/boyshockey\/2019\/12\/17\/penguins-trip-up-wildcats-late-game-surge-williston-garners-first-win-versus-asl-highlanders-keep-wildcats-in-the-lowlands\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins\u00a0Trip Up Wildcat\u2019s Late-Game Surge;\u00a0Williston Garners First Win Versus ASL;\u00a0Highlanders Keep\u00a0Wildcats\u00a0in the Lowlands\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Cushing Penguins continued to have\u00a0Wililston\u2019s\u00a0number, defeating the Wildcats 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon.\u00a0 Williston pulled out all the stops in the second and much of the third period but could not secure a win or tie on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Cushing jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period that led the Williston coaching staff shaking its collective heads.\u00a0 Williston had a game plan and stuck to it quite\u00a0well\u00a0but Cushing took advantage of its chances, while\u00a0Williston just couldn\u2019t find the back of the net, even after a hitting-from-behind penalty that cost a Cushing player some time\u2014five minutes.\u00a0 Still, the Williston team felt like they had some jam and could get things going in the second.<\/p>\n<p>After the break, Williston entered the period on a mission.\u00a0 There was an energy and power that had been lacking from the club and they got right to work by methodically putting pressure on the Cushing defense, hemming them into their own zone for much of the period.\u00a0 At around the ten-minute mark, Williston went on its second 5-minute power play and capitalized early.\u00a0 The first goal was scored when Shaul Mitton (Charlottetown, PEI) worked a puck to Jake\u00a0Sacratini\u00a0in the left corner of the Cushing zone.\u00a0\u00a0Sacratini\u00a0fired a pass across the low slot to a wide-open David Novotny who buried the puck past Cushing freshman goalie, Jackson Irving.<\/p>\n<p>Before the echoes from the\u00a0cheers\u00a0could die down,\u00a0and still nursing the five-minute power play,\u00a0sophomore Connor\u00a0Hagness\u00a0(Guilford,\u00a0CT)drove\u00a0down the right lane into the\u00a0Cushing\u00a0zone and let a\u00a0shot ride that was saved\u00a0by Irving but that was buried by new sophomore Ryan Deschamps (Burriville, RI).\u00a0 With a fire on the mountain, the Wildcats continued working to even the score.\u00a0 Yet even with the momentum in their favor,\u00a0they still trailed at the end of the period.<\/p>\n<p>Cushing was able to take a two-goal lead\u00a0in the third period on a two-on-one\u00a0just 1:48 into the period.\u00a0 Williston continued to battle and\u00a0with the goalie pulled, heavy pressure, and\u00a0just under two minutes remaining in the game,\u00a0Sacratini\u00a0buried a puck on the near side to pull within one;\u00a0however\u00a0the fourth goal would never come to fruition and Williston took the loss, 4-3.<\/p>\n<p>Williston outshot Cushing, 42-34.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Friday night,\u00a0Academie\u00a0St-Louis\u00a0rolled into town to\u00a0take on Williston.\u00a0 Williston got out to a 2-0 lead in the first and never looked back.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats got on the board just 1:52 into the game when Shaul Mitton took a shot from the slot that missed the net sending a puck curtailing into the corner and up the boards to a down-charging Hunter Wilson who, from the right hash marks, let a wrister go that landed on the stick of Ryan Deschamps two feet above the crease; Deschamps buried the pass past\u00a0Sameul\u00a0Clausiau.\u00a0 Williston got its second in the period when Alex\u00a0Latkovski\u00a0worked a pass in the neutral zone back to defenseman Roscoe Eade (Catonsville, MD) who skied a puck over center ice to a streaking Rich Stefanik (Whitehouse Station, NJ).\u00a0 Stefanik broke into the zone on a break-away and made a nifty backhand to forehand move that beat\u00a0Clausiau.<\/p>\n<p>In the second, ASL got its first goal of the period on a 3-1.\u00a0 However, every silver lining has a touch of gray, and any hopes to draw even were dashed when David Novotny intercepted a pass in the offensive zone and found Captain Tommy Harty (Billerica, MA) streaking to the net.\u00a0 His initial shot didn\u2019t go but his quick stick on the rebound slid the puck between the legs of the ASL goalie. David Novotny put the Wildcats up two goals when Will\u00a0Gaca\u00a0(Durham, NC) made a textbook regroup pass to Assistant Captain Tyler Varin (Smithfield, RI) who then hit number ten splitting the ASL d.\u00a0 Novotny broke in and beat\u00a0Clausiau\u00a0with some silky moves.<\/p>\n<p>Connor\u00a0Hagness\u00a0got\u00a0his\u00a0first\u00a0goal of the year when, off a face-off, he took a cross-ice feed from Mitchell Hansen that was initially stopped. However, he kept after his rebound, circled behind the net and wrapped it in past\u00a0Clausiau.\u00a0 This would be the final goal of the game giving Williston a 5-1 win.\u00a0 Trevor Corsello was excellent in the game making 24 saves.\u00a0 Williston had 52 shots on net.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The following evening, Williston traveled to Washington, CT to take on Gunnery.\u00a0 Williston\u00a0got on the board about midway into the second\u00a0when William Tripp\u00a0(Lakeville, MA) collected an errant puck at the blue line as Gunnery was looking\u00a0to break out and made a pass to Tommy Harty.\u00a0 Number eight drove to the net and\u00a0put a pass to the far post that was tipped by Alex\u00a0Latkovski\u00a0and saved by Gunnery goalie, Carmine\u00a0Andranovich, however Tripp attacked the net and batted the rebound in.<\/p>\n<p>Gunnery tied the game\u00a0at the 12:27 mark.\u00a0 In the third, they scored three unanswered goals and the Wildcats lost, 4-1.\u00a0\u00a0The \u2018Cats boarded the\u00a0bus and\u00a0headed down the road\u00a0feelin\u2019 bad.\u00a0 Nothing else to say.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats are off this Wednesday afternoon as they prepare to head to the St. Sebastian\u2019s Holiday Tournament in Needham, MA.\u00a0 Williston gets\u00a0the\u00a08 o\u2019clock game on Friday as they take on Lake Placid, NY\u2019s Northwood School.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The Cushing Penguins continued to have\u00a0Wililston\u2019s\u00a0number, defeating the Wildcats 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon.\u00a0 Williston pulled out all the stops in the second and much of the third period but could not secure a win or tie on the day.
