{"id":689,"date":"2020-01-09T15:13:04","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T20:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/boyshockey\/?p=689"},"modified":"2020-01-09T15:13:04","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T20:13:04","slug":"wildcats-put-pieces-together-defeat-saints-3-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/boyshockey\/2020\/01\/09\/wildcats-put-pieces-together-defeat-saints-3-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildcats Put Pieces Together,\u00a0Defeat Saints, 3-2\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>The Williston boy\u2019s hockey team got off the schneid with a big road<\/span><span>&#8211;<\/span><span>win at Canterbury on Wednesday afternoon<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0with a 3-2\u00a0<\/span><span>decision<\/span><span>\u00a0over the Saints.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Both clubs entered the game with a 1-8-1 record and looking to get on the winning side of things.\u00a0 Williston started off the game like\u00a0mad-men\u00a0in the defensive zone with Zac\u00a0Gmerek\u00a0leading the charge; he would end the day with five blocked shots.\u00a0 Canterbury\u00a0<\/span><span>scored\u00a0<\/span><span>first when a Canterbury defenseman hit a man in front\u00a0<\/span><span>that\u00a0<\/span><span>deflected errantly into goalie<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0Trevor Corsello<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0who could not corral the<\/span><span>\u00a0puck<\/span><span>.\u00a0 A Saint forward pounced on the rebound giving the Saints a 1-0 lead into the first break.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the second, and with Williston on the power play, Tyler Varin and William Tripp played catch at the blue line\u00a0<\/span><span>before Tripp sent a quick pass to a wide-open Tommy Harty in the slot who one-timed a low shot that beat Canterbury goalie Cal Skwara between the legs.\u00a0 It was reminiscent of the captain\u2019s two goals against Northwood a month earlier.\u00a0 Williston and Canterbury traded opportunities but ended the period 1-1.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the third, Williston took the lead at the 2:40 mark of the period when David Novotny worked a puck to Tripp from the\u00a0hal<\/span><span>f<\/span><span>wa<\/span><span>ll<\/span><span>.\u00a0 Trip zipped a quick pass to Varin at the right point who started to drive toward the net and with the patience of St. Stephen waited out a Canterbury defender who slid by looking to block a potential shot;\u00a0<\/span><span>the assistant captain<\/span><span>\u00a0continued toward the net and forced Skwara to drop putting the puck over his shoulder.\u00a0 However, eight minutes later Canterbury scored on a one-timer from the blue line that beat Corsello.\u00a0 The Williston bench was down but quickly pulled themselves up by the metaphorical boot straps and plodded along until less than two minutes later when\u00a0<\/span><span>Novotny got the puck to Jake\u00a0Sacratini\u00a0in the corner who skated toward the blue line and around the circle on his backhand, rounded the circle<\/span><span>&#8211;<\/span><span>top, moved the puck to his forehand and slipped a quick shot under the arm of Skwara.\u00a0 It was a dandy of a goal and put Williston up, 3-2<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0with just under five minutes remaining.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At this point, Williston buckled up the defense and shut down Canterbury for the win.\u00a0 Shot<\/span><span>s<\/span><span>\u00a0were 28-27, Canterbury.\u00a0\u00a0Gmerek\u00a0earned the game puck for his excellent and focused defense and willingness to block shots.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Williston heads to Sheffield, MA on Saturday to take on the Berkshire Bears at 3:15.\u00a0 If you\u2019re making the trip, flip flops and Hawaiian shirts are encouraged due to the spring-like temps for the weekend.\u00a0 Bring an umbrella though, the heavy stuffs\u00a0gonna\u2019 be coming down too.
