{"id":139,"date":"2014-10-24T14:08:01","date_gmt":"2014-10-24T18:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/?p=139"},"modified":"2014-10-24T14:08:01","modified_gmt":"2014-10-24T18:08:01","slug":"in-the-footsteps-of-turing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/2014\/10\/24\/in-the-footsteps-of-turing\/","title":{"rendered":"In the footsteps of Turing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier today I gave <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/hAYh4BKnNIA\">a live announcement<\/a> during parents&#8217; weekend promoting the Math Team:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"In the footsteps of Turing\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hAYh4BKnNIA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the text of my speech:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Good morning Williston!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Welcome parents!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My name is Josh Seamon and I\u2019m the chair of the math department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Please raise your hand if you can tell me the name of this person:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/alan-turing-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-140\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/alan-turing-photo-818x1024.jpg\" alt=\"alan-turing-photo\" width=\"474\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/alan-turing-photo-818x1024.jpg 818w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/alan-turing-photo-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/alan-turing-photo-199x250.jpg 199w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/alan-turing-photo.jpg 1234w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\nHint:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">He won the Allies WWII<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">He invented the computer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In my opinion he\u2019s the most influential person of the 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Meet Alan Turing, a true Renaissance<b> <\/b>man who was many things, but first and foremost he was a mathematician.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While leading a team at Bletchley Park in the UK during WW2, his team broke the Nazi\u2019s Enigma code and in the process he built the the worlds first modern computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Simply put, our world would be unrecognizable if not for the work of this man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of all the things Turing taught the world, the most important lesson has to be:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>If you want to change the world, become a mathematician.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, I can\u2019t <b>guarantee<\/b> you\u2019ll become the next Turing, but one great way to move in that direction is&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/Williston-Math-Team-White-with-dates.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-141\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/Williston-Math-Team-White-with-dates.png\" alt=\"Williston-Math-Team-(White)---with-dates\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1097\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/Williston-Math-Team-White-with-dates.png 1800w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/Williston-Math-Team-White-with-dates-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/Williston-Math-Team-White-with-dates-1024x624.png 1024w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/mathteam\/files\/2014\/10\/Williston-Math-Team-White-with-dates-250x152.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8230;to join the Williston Math Team which meets on Blue Tuesdays and Green Mondays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to working through really exciting problems on our own, we compete in several on and off campus math competitions including ones hosted by Harvard, MIT, and Princeton.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So, follow in the steps of Turing: Study math. Join the team.
