Nina Hart Griffiths ’67

Nina Hart Griffiths, actor, singer-songwriter, airline pilot. Daughter of Joan Hart and Everett Hart, born in New York City on November 27, 1949; died in Miami, FL on December 23, 2020. She wrote and performed the hit song “I Believe in Love” in Milos Forman’s 1971 film “Taking Off,” played Meredith Halliday in “As the World Turns,” and toured the US in theater before becoming a commercial airline pilot. Educated at Friends Seminary and the Northampton School for Girls, Nina lived in New York City, San Francisco, Sharon, CT, and Key Largo. Twice married and divorced, she retired from United Airlines after 22 years with 11 years as a 767 and Airbus Captain. Generous, warm, talented, independent, and courageous, in addition to music and flying, she loved sailing, reading, and dinners with friends and family. Survived by her sister Laurie Kain Hart of Los Angeles and beloved nephew Murdo McGrath, she will be so deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

  1. My sincere condolences to Laurie. Though you may not remember me I do you. I stayed with you, Nina and your parents several times in NYC when Nina and I were in school together. She was a dear friend whom, sadly, I’ve not seen for many years. I’d always hoped we would reconnect in our old age. We’d had so much in common. I shall always treasure our years of friendship. Your sister was one in a million!

    1. I never had the opportunity to know Nina other than from seeing her perform in the movie Taking Off. I listen to her song Love constantly and it has inspired me in ways I can’t even describe! Rest in peace beautiful musical soul <3

  2. I lived near Nina my senior year at northampton and came to know her . She was fun and different I last saw Nina at our 25th reunion 25 years ago . I think she was using crutches then. Please accept my deepest condolences jaye Brinster white

  3. Nina was a great girl with boundless energy. I always knew she would do great things in her life. She is now soaring above debating Madame Cantarella!.I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

  4. I remember Nina from Dance Club and Science Club. She was a multitalented person. I was so impressed when she became a pilot. Good for her. She was a kind person and will be missed by her friends and family and those of us from NSFG.

  5. I remember Nina well, singing with her and watching her on TV. So much talent in such a tiny person!! My condolences to her sister, Laurie.

  6. The little girl with the big smile has left us all way too soon. We could always see what a talented actress Nina was, but who could have predicted the diverse careers she would have? We NSFG classmate will remember her grace, her laughter and her kindness. I extend my sincere condolences to her sister.

  7. Nina was so full of energy, contagious in the best way. What a full life, although still, too short.
