{"id":1600,"date":"2013-01-10T09:51:44","date_gmt":"2013-01-10T14:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/?p=1600"},"modified":"2013-08-01T09:30:06","modified_gmt":"2013-08-01T14:30:06","slug":"ten-for-cum-laude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/ten-for-cum-laude\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten for Cum Laude"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1366\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"2012 Spring Cum Laude Ceremony\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/6797409917_967fb9ea1b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>The Williston Northampton School chapter of the Cum Laude Society will be inducting 10 members from the Class of 2013 on Friday, January 11 at 8:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/cumlaudesociety.org\/\">Cum Laude Society<\/a>, founded in 1906 and modeled after Phi Beta Kappa, honors scholastic achievement in secondary schools.\u00a0 The society has over 350 chapters, with the majority in independent schools.\u00a0 In 1921, Williston Academy became a member of the society, followed by Northampton School for Girls in 1951.\u00a0 In 1971, a new charter was created for The Williston Northampton School.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The following students will be inducted in the Phillips Stevens Chapel on the Williston Northampton campus.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Mika Chmielewski (Southampton, MA)<br \/>\nDavid Fay (South Hadley, MA)<br \/>\nDevon Greenwood (Easthampton)<br \/>\nEmmaline Hing (Easthampton, MA)<br \/>\nJilly Lim (Williamstown, MA)<br \/>\nKeely Quirk (Easthampton, MA)<br \/>\nMaddison Stemple-Piatt (Hatfield, MA)<br \/>\nEric Tallman (Longmeadow, MA)<br \/>\nHaoshu Xu (Suzhou, China)<br \/>\nJiayuan Xu (Beijing, China)<\/p>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\">\n<p>This year\u2019s Cum Laude keynote address was delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verite.org\/user\/449\">Allison Arbib<\/a> (Williston Class of 2003). Ms. Arbib is the raw materials department manager at Amherst-based NGO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.verite.org\/\">Verit\u00e9<\/a>, which oversees investigations into labor conditions at the base of globalized supply chains, including the cocoa, cotton, and gold markets.\u00a0 She is a specialist in forced labor, child labor, and human trafficking\u2014with work experience in Indonesia, Ghana, Cote d\u2019Ivoire, and Burkina Faso.\u00a0 Ms. Arbib is a 2007 graduate of Mount Holyoke College.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note:<\/em> The following students were also inducted to the Cum Laude Society in May, during Williston Northampton&#8217;s Commencement ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>Laura M.
