{"id":2307,"date":"2013-04-29T10:10:16","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T15:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/?p=2307"},"modified":"2013-04-29T14:51:42","modified_gmt":"2013-04-29T19:51:42","slug":"we-the-people-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/we-the-people-update\/","title":{"rendered":"We the People Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/willistonnorthampton\/sets\/72157633366132755\/with\/8692841853\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2308\" title=\"We the People in DC 2013\" src=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/files\/2013\/04\/Attachment-1-1024x674.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/files\/2013\/04\/Attachment-1-1024x674.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/files\/2013\/04\/Attachment-1-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/files\/2013\/04\/Attachment-1-455x300.jpg 455w, https:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/files\/2013\/04\/Attachment-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><em>Editor&#8217;s note: AP US History classes participated in the\u00a0<a title=\"We the People Trip Details\" href=\"http:\/\/willistonblogs.com\/onthequad\/we-the-people-trip-details\/\">We the People<\/a> program from April 26-30 at George Mason University in Washington, D.C.<\/em> <em>The following is an update from history teacher and trip leader Peter Gunn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What a great start!\u00a0 Despite some travel and other sequester-related challenges on Friday, we did tour the Supreme Court and the King, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials \u2013 many inspiring moments.\u00a0 For me, the highlight was viewing the actual letter between Clarence Earl Gideon and the Clerk of the Supreme Court.\u00a0 While many believe that \u201cdue process\u201d is the bedrock of civil liberty, Mr. Gideon\u2019s struggle shows me that a deep and persistent belief in your own rights is the vital element in civil society.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->On Saturday, the students gave wonderful presentations \u2013 well-reasoned, substantially documented and eloquently expressed.\u00a0 They responded to follow-ups with amazing applications of their learning to new questions.\u00a0 Here are some of the questions posed by the judges (who included an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court and law professors):<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Explain how classical republicanism and natural rights philosophy inform the federal system of government.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Why was there no Bill of Rights under the Articles of Confederation<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Talk about the Emancipation proclamation<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the students gave another round of extraordinary performances \u2014 surpassing their eloquence and insight from the first round.\u00a0 While we did not secure a place in the final round of the top 10 schools, I am confident that they impressed the judges.\u00a0 Indeed, I think they impressed themselves!\u00a0 Dave Koritkoski, Diane Williams and I shared with them our great respect for what they accomplished this year.\u00a0 Moreover, we shared our great pride in being associated with them.\u00a0 All of the Williston family should join in our celebration of these great young scholars.<\/p>\n<p>Peter T.
