Lance Keimig Presents Photographers’ Lecture Series

Lance Keimig Death_Valley-0182Lance Keimig, a photographer best known for his nocturnal images, will present the second lecture in this year’s Photographers’ Lecture Series on April 15 at 6:30 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Dodge Room, Reed Campus Center.

Mr. Keimig’s book, Night Photography: Finding Your Way In The Dark, was published by Focal Press in August of 2010, and has been translated into six languages. A second edition will be published in late 2014. In a short documentary of the same name, Mr. Keiming described his work as a unique way of compressing time.

Clay Artist Shapes Newest Grubbs Gallery Exhibit

After exhibiting her work in galleries across the country for two decades, nationally recognized artist Robbie Heidinger will bring her latest pieces to Williston’s Grubbs Gallery beginning April 2.

Ms. Heidinger hand-forms clay into practical yet beautiful designs that evoke elements of the natural world.”Watch a plant grow, and you see its intention is perfect,” Ms. Heidinger writes in her artist’s statement. “It uses just the right shape, amount of color, and texture to fulfill its pliant, living design. I try to emulate this ‘biosophy’ in clay—without doing realistic imitations of plants.”

Gently curving lines, hues inspired by earth and sky, and an aesthetic rooted in the outdoors are all hallmarks of Ms. Heidinger’s ceramics. Each of the pieces—the bowls, plates, cups and baskets she creates—beg to be touched.

“It satisfies the urge to feel something attractively ‘natural,’ and more seductively, rewards the user by connecting them with a very potent and tightly focused abstraction of the tissues and structures of organic life,” Ms. Heidinger, of Westhampton, writes. “This—the psychosomatic connection occurring during the act of using the piece—unleashes the potencies of my expression.”

“New Work by Robbie Heidinger” will run from April 2 through May 11 at the Grubbs Gallery, with an opening Sunday, April 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more about the artist, visit robbieheidinger.com

Group Exhibit of Fiber Art Blooms in Grubbs

A group exhibit featuring the work of a dozen fiber artists from Southern Connecticut is now on display at the Williston Northampton School’s Grubbs Gallery.

“Double Take: Photo & Fiber,” which includes both fiber artwork and the nature photographs that inspired them, opened March 6. A reception for the artists will be held in the gallery on March 23 from 2-4 p.m.

The collective work was created by Sisters in Cloth, a group who drew their name from a Progressive quilt with a batik motif that they created together. Sisters in Cloth started in Guilford in 2000 and the group’s collective work has appeared in such venues as Haskins Labs at Yale University, Legislative Office Building in Hartford, Garde Theater in New London, and Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

Happy Chaos as Students Prep Winter Arts Walk

IMG_1443The Grubbs Gallery was bustling with dozens of arts students on Thursday. Some wielded hammers, others used levels to straighten photos, and one was using fishing line to hang a jellyfish from the ceiling.

The artists, some 30 students from Arts Intensive class, were bubbling with questions about their displays: Did someone have a mike for a live performance? Was a particularly large canvas staying upstairs? What was the best way to center a nail for a heavy chicken painting? Could you put a row of light bulbs up using a stapler?

IMG_1439Fine and Performing Arts Teacher Susanna White was the calm epicenter in the middle of it all. Check with Matt Spearing in Student Activities for the mike, she said. Yes, the canvas would stay upstairs. Use painters’ tape to center the nail and get a perfect hole. Don’t use a stapler; use a staple gun for the lights.

Including those in Grubbs, artwork from roughly 120 students is going up around the Reed Campus Center this week. The work will be on display on Monday, March 3 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. during the public Arts Walk show. Until then, a form of happy chaos is taking place around the building.

Winter Pops Concert Debuts

WNS-WinterPops[2013-14]The Williston Band and Orchestra will perform the 1st Annual Winter Pops Concert this Sunday, February 23 at 4 p.m. in the Dodge Room, Reed Campus Center.

They will play some pieces ranging in style from folk and Celtic to soul and pop. The program includes arrangements from of China, England, Ireland, Korea, and the U.S. with music from Adele, Julie Gold, Nanci Griffith, Patti Labelle, John Legend, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and more.

The students have been working hard to put together an exciting program of music for all to enjoy and they look forward to presenting it this weekend!

Photographers’ Lecture Series: Bill Diodato

Internationally recognized photographer Bill Diodato, a native of New England, launched his career in New York in 1990 after completing the program at Hallmark School of Photography in Turners Falls. Since then, he has developed a career as an acclaimed commercial and fine-art photographer.He has photographed for magazines including Allure, Marie Claire, Glamour, Self, New York Times Magazine, Travel & Leisure, and Interview. His commercial clients include Hollister, Clinique, Clairol, John Frieda, Biore, Victoria’s Secret, Cole Haan, Niemann Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales.

Diodato has received awards for his portraits, still-life, product, and fashion photography including the Cannes International Photo Festival, Graphis 100 Best in Photography, Communications Arts, the International Photography Awards, and Kodak.

Diodato’s personal projects include his first monograph, Care of Ward 81 (June 2010), which received several awards including the International Book Award. The book, with a foreword by photographer Mary Ellen Mark, documents the closed Oregon State Mental Hospital, which was the setting of the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Diodato writes, “My intention in publishing these images is to present the physical crumbling and decaying cells, which represent the end of old, corrupt, poorly-run asylums and bring about a sense of closure for the women of Ward 81.” The book has been widely recognized, with articles in magazines including Esquire, Discorsi Fotografici, ASMP, and Photographer’s Forum and awards including the Eric Hoffer Book Award, Communications Arts Photography Book Award, and the PDN Photo Annual.

November Brings a Shockwave

A classical Indian dance, a solo en pointe, and the choreography of guest artist Michelle Marroquin will be among the highlights of Shockwave, the fall concert of the Williston Northampton Dance Ensemble.

The concert will feature 12 dances, including the work of six student choreographers—Victoria Durocher, Keely Quirk, Madeline Wise, Marie Innarelli, Tory Kolbjornsen and Maddison Stemple-Piatt—and a collaborative ensemble piece by the choreography class.

Pat Bock Exhibits “Paper Thoughts” at Williston’s Grubbs Gallery

Pat Bock exhibits "Paper Thoughts" at the Grubbs Gallery of The Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, MAArtist Pat Bock will present “Paper Thoughts” at the Grubbs Gallery in the Reed Campus Center of The Williston Northampton School from January 5 through February 29.

In her recent mixed media compositions, Bock finds paper to be an accommodating medium as she puts it through its paces. Simple ideas such as seeds, slips, and scribbles are thoughtfully expressed through line, color, and texture.

Grubbs Gallery Exhibits Portraits and Figurative Sculptures by “Go Figure” Members

Evelyn I hear music by Viki Gable

Members of Go Figure Sculpture Studios in Holyoke, MA, will present a group show of portraits and figurative sculptures in clay and bronze at the Grubbs Gallery in the Reed Campus Center of The Williston Northampton School from November 3 through December 30, 2011.  An artists’ reception will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2:00-5:00 p.m. Participating artists are:  Esthela Bergeron, Harriette Block, Elizabeth Caine, LeaAnn Cogswell, Cynthia Consentino, Viki Gable, Betty Gerich, Lee Hutt, Betsy Koscher, Christina Mastrangelo, and Lauren Mills.

Go Figure Sculpture Studios, a not-for-profit entity, is located in the Canal Gallery Building, an old paper mill that has been converted to artist studios. Founded by sculptor Lee Hutt, the studio exists to give artists and opportunity to work from life on a regular and affordable basis. While they do not offer formal classes, they are open to new members of all levels. Teaching is done informally as members are always available to advise one other.  Studio members, who live locally and as far away as Boston and Burlington, CT, have been juried into national competitions and have won awards and recognition in various professional art venues.
