Athletes of the Week – Oct. 13th

smithDavis Smith ‘16

Davis is a consistently hard working player on the field for the boys’ varsity soccer team. This was especially true in the Wildcats’ last two games against Choate and Loomis. Davis’ competitiveness in these games sets the example of how an athlete should compete. Davis plays center midfield and has the job of marking the opponent’s strongest player. Davis’ sets a great example for the other players on the team with his tireless work ethic and his excellent attitude.

 

 

phelanJenna Phelan ‘15

Jenna is one of the most consistent defensive players on the girls’ varsity volleyball team, helping the Wildcats by providing numerous digs a game. She is constantly improving her skills and has developed into a powerful server.  Jenna keeps her composure throughout the game and is a positive leader for the younger girls on the team.

 

 

 

Tito Ovhori ‘15

On Saturday, Tito scored both goals in the boys jvb soccer team’s 2-0 win against Pomfret School. Tito has a strong shot, is excellent in one on one situations and has proven to be a very skillful ball handler and a great defender.

 

Maisy Glick ‘15

Maisy played a great game for the girls’ jv field hockey team on Saturday. Stepping into the goalie position, Maisy made an inordinate amount of saves against the Westminster offense. Maisy’s leadership was apparent as she helped guide her defenders in a loud and positive manner. She fought like a true competitor and led the team with composure, sportsmanship and fierce determination.

 

 

Athletes of the Week – Oct. 6th

garofanoNick Garofano ‘16

Nick had a terrific game against Gunnery in varsity football’s 54-27 win over the Highlanders.  On Williston’s first two offensive plays of the game Nick scored touchdowns of 74 and 35 yards. Nick ended the game rushing for 233 yards scoring 3 touchdowns and four two point conversions.  He also caught two passes for 28 yards.  Nick’s competitiveness and playmaking ability has been a big part of the team’s 3-0 start.

Emily is enjoying an outstanding season for the girls’ varsity soccer team. Emily steps up big for her team game after game from her defensive position. Emily is a great role model for her team as she exemplifies an outstanding attitude, fantastic leadership, and a competitiveness that is unmatched.
 

 

hanSoo Jeong Han ‘15

Soo Jeong helped lead the girls jv volleyball team to a victory over Stoneleigh Burnham last week by beginning the set with 15 unanswered serves, most of which were aces.  She gave the team an enormous lead that the opposition could not come back from.  Soo Jeong also had multiple digs and hits throughout the match which helped secure a win for the Wildcats.

 

Athletes of the Week – Sept. 29th

aquadroAnthony Aquadro ‘15

Anthony plays a key role in the success of the boys varsity soccer team from his left back position. Last week Anthony assisted on the game tying goal against Pomfret School. Anthony is the team’s captain and has shown great leadership both on and off the field all season long.

 

 

 

 

shelineLizzie Sheline ‘16

Lizzie had an outstanding game on Wednesday at Hotchkiss for the girls’ varsity field hockey team. Playing sweeper, Lizzie was a big part of keeping the Hotchkiss offense scoreless for 49 minutes.  Supporting the Wildcats’ defensive line, Lizzie came up big several times against the swift moving Hotchkiss offense. Lizzie’s work ethic and fearless play sets a great example for the team.

Nate Gordon ‘16

Nate had an outstanding performance at the Westminster Invitational cross country race on Saturday. Nate finished fifth overall in the JV race with a time of 20:47, helping the Wildcats to a second place finish of the nine competing teams. Nate competed with confidence and conviction, a great example for everyone on the team.

 

 

Athletes of the Week – Sept. 22nd

maddenSam Madden ‘17

Sam showed a great deal of determination for the girls’ cross country team last week.  Sam came in first for Williston and second overall in both races.  She is only 15 seconds off the home course Honor Roll, after running the course once.

Johnny helped lead the varsity football team to a season opening win over Westminster in exciting fashion on Saturday.  Johnny exhibited excellent leadership, poise and competitiveness in a tight game. John completed 14-26 of his passes for a total of 232 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions.

Gabby has been an outstanding player during the opening week of the season for girls JV soccer team.  Though  Gabby is usually a midfielder, she did not hesitate to jump into the goal when there was a need to fill that position.  She made several key in the team’s 2-1 win over Kingswood on Saturday.

 

 

 

 

champignyRob Champigny  ‘18

After spending a couple of days playing soccer, Rob moved to cross country last week with great success. On Wednesday Rob finished second overall and first for Williston in the team’s meet against Roxbury Latin and Worcester Academy. Rob followed this up on Saturday with a third place overall and first for the Wildcats in the team’s meet against Northfield Mt. Hermon and Suffield Academy.

 

Athletes of the Week – Sept. 15th

mscottMaddy Scott ‘16

Maddy finished first for Williston and second overall in the girls cross country team’s season opening win over Kent School. Maddy finished with a time of 24:07 on a very hilly course. Maddy is a valuable leader both on and off the course and her work ethic is second to none.

 

 

 

 

fryeCalvin Frye ‘16

Calvin had a phenomenal day on Saturday for the boys’ varsity water polo team in their games against Brunswick and Choate. Calvin scored 9 goals in the two games. Beyond his scoring, Calvin has been a strong leader for the team.

 

Spring Athletic Awards Announced

The spring season athletic awards assembly was held on Friday May 23, 2014. The Athletic Department presented the Blanket Award for participation followed by the George Denman Award and the Alumnae Award, which are presented to a senior boy and girl. In addition the award winners for individual sports were announced.

blanketDSC_0006The Blanket Award is given in recognition of those students who have participated on a team in every season they have been in the upper school at Williston. The following students were presented Blanket Awards at the awards assembly.

Athletes of the Week – April 12th

senecalDSC_0002Taylor Senecal ‘14

Taylor has had a great season for the girls’ varsity golf team. Taylor’s stellar play has helped the Wildcats string together a record of 9 wins and 3 losses. Last week Taylor continued her outstanding play by shooting a 40 against her opponents at Miss Hall’s and Miss Porter’s. Taylor’s round of 4 over par was low enough to earn her as the match medalist, continuing her streak of having the lowest round of the match. Taylor is a great role model for the younger players on the team and her leadership will be missed next season.

Adey has been an integral part of the boys’ varsity track team’s success this year. Adey has continued to improve throughout the season, as he has run a personal best nearly every week in each of his events. Last week competing against Worcester Academy and Cushing Academy, Adey placed first in the 200m andsecond in 100m. In addition to his individual success, Adey is also anchors the 4×100 relay team. Adey has become a team leader and his work ethic provides a great example for the younger kids on the team.

Dimity has had a successful season as the goalie for the girls’ jv lacrosse team.  Dimity’s solid play in goal has helped the team to a 6-3 record on the season. In the last two weeks Dimity helped secure wins over Suffield, Choate and Kingswood. Dimity has been a hard working and positive force on the team all season long.

Parker has played very well for the boys jv lacrosse team this past week. On Wednesday, Parker had 7 goals and 4 assist against Northfield Mt. Hermon.  On Saturday against Worcester Academy he added 3 more goals, bringing his weekly total to 10 goals and 4 assists.  In addition to his scoring capabilities, Parker leads by example by consistently outhustling his opponents.  His determination and scrappy play have been crucial to the Wildcats success.

 

 

 

 

 

Athletes of the Week – April 5th

Gabby has had a great season for the girls’ varsity track team. This season Gabby continues to break records at almost every meet. Last week Gabby broke her own record in the 100m, with a time of 11.9 sec. In addition, she broke the triple jump record by jumping a distance of 38’ 1/4”, and she also tied the school record in the 200m with a time of 25.9sec. Gabby’s work ethic and preparation provides a great example for her teammates.

Alex has been playing very well for the boys’ varsity tennis team.In last week’s match against Avon, Alex and partner William Flynn won the Wildcats only doubles point of the match. Alex then prevailed in his singles match, earning Williston’s only singles win of the match against a strong opponent. Alex started the match with a first set deficit of 3-0. He was able to persevere and continued to fight and played hard moving on to win his match by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Alex’s mental toughness and ability to play hard until the end enables him to be competitive in every match.

Delaney has been an integral part of the varsity softball team this year. Last week against Choate, she sparked a rally for the Wildcats by blasting a two run homer. Not only has Delaney been a force at the plate, but her defensive play have helped anchor the team. Delaney has been a determined and focused player all season long.

Maddie has been a steady, positive presence on the girl’s jv tennis team this year.  She was elected co-captain by the team and has set the tone with her sportsmanship and strong effort. She won her match last weekend at Northfied Mt. Hermon with a straight set victory at the number two singles spot. During the match Maddie displayed rapidly improving form, consistency, and strategy. Maddie displays the qualities of a great leader and is a fantastic role model for the younger girls on the team.

 

Athletes of the Week – April 28th

Julie had exceptional wins for the girls’ varsity tennis team in her last two matches. She was victorious against both Westminster’s and Deerfield’s number one singles players. In both of these matches, she was tested by strong players but was able to use her powerful groundstrokes and serve effectively. She also demonstrated intelligent shot selection and mental toughness in these matches. Julie’s work ethic and her ability to lead by example makes her a great role model for the younger players on the team.

Andrew plays a crucial role on the boys’ varsity lacrosse team as the face-off man. At the face-off, Andrew has won nearly 60% of his draws this year, which has amounted to 70+ possessions for Williston’s offense. Last week he was 11/18 against Wilbraham and Monson, and 10/12 against Hopkins. Andrew’s play has been vital to the success of the team this season.

Kelly has pitched very well for the jv baseball team. Recently he went 5 1/3 innings against Salisbury to get the win and a full 7 innings giving up no earned runs in the team’s win over Rectory. Kelly’s attitude, composure and work ethic are a tremendous example for the players on his team.

 

 

Gabby Thomas ’15 Sets Track Records

thomasDSC_0422Gabby Thomas ’15 started the track season off with a bang setting two school records in the team’s season opening meet against Cheshire and Millbrook. Thomas, who had set both records in 2013,  long jumped 18’ 5” to break her old mark of 17’ 7 1/2” and triple jumped 36’ 11 1/2” surpassing her previous record of 36’ 6”. Thomas also holds the school record in the 100m dash with a time of 12.02 set at the New England Championships last year.
