The Grubbs Gallery 2014-15 Season

A slate of painters and artists who draw inspiration from the land and the air, from architectural forms and memories of childhood, will fill the Grubbs Gallery for the 2014-15 season.

The nine shows this season will include work by Marlene Rye, Lise Lemeland, David Marshall, Karen Iglehart, Rhys Davies, and Amanda Barrow and Co.

“It is going to be a year of very impressive exhibitions because they are all so talented with such distinctive styles,” noted Natania Hume, Grubbs Gallery director and curator, in an email about the upcoming season.

Ms. Hume, who also teaches ceramics, design, and drawing at the school, said she looked for artists who not only had exemplary work, but who could teach Williston students about techniques, materials, and the creative process.

“Although the Grubbs Gallery artists are mostly painters this year, they all get inspiration from very specific subjects and will all give very interesting gallery talks,” Ms. Hume noted.

Writers’ Workshop Series Opens with Joan Wickersham

An author who writes of heartbreak, regret, and unbidden intimacy will lead off Williston Northampton School’s long-running author lecture series, now in its 17th year.

Author and essayist Joan Wickersham will present the first in this year’s Writers’ Workshop Series on September 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Dodge Room, Reed Campus Center.

Ms. Wickersham is the acclaimed author of a book of fiction, The News from Spain: Seven Variations on a Love Story (Knopf 2012); a memoir, The Suicide Index: Putting My Father’s Death in Order (Harcourt 2008); and a novel, The Paper Anniversary (Viking Adult, 1993).

Leading Edge Thinker Julius Pryor to Present the 174th Convocation Keynote

A leading edge thinker, strategic consultant, and author will present the keynote for Williston Northampton School’s 174th Convocation ceremony on Friday, September 12, 2014.

Julius Pryor III ’73, general managing partner of JPryorGroup LLC and author of Thriving in a Disruptive World, will speak about the six concepts he developed to help navigate the 21st century.

Mr. Pryor has worked as the vice president of global diversity for Coca-Cola Enterprises and Johnson & Johnson, and as the director of diversity strategies for Russell Corporation. For 26 years, he served as a captain and surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy, where he held operational leadership roles in Pacific and Atlantic Fleets at the shipboard and joint staff level. He graduated from Morehouse College.

New Faculty Bring New Sense of Community

Williston welcomes 12 newcomers to campus

10557428463_4385727194_zThe dozen members of the incoming faculty are not only joining a thriving community at the Williston Northampton School, they’re bringing an even stronger sense of community with them. Some of the new faculty members have spouses already at Williston; others are coming with their families to live and work at the school.

“It’s a fairly diverse group, but there are common themes,” said Dean of Faculty Peter Valine of the 12 new faculty members. “One thing that’s common to all of them, and this doesn’t always happen with each rookie class, is that they’ll all be living on campus.”

Mr. Valine said that having the new faculty both work and live at the school will create deep community connections—especially since so many of the faculty have had experience at other independent schools.

“All of them bring enthusiasm and excitement,” he said. “It’s like this infusion of energy and ideas that I think is incredibly exciting for the school.”

SAGE Dining Services Comes to Williston

2014 Birch Dining CommonsFood service seems like such a simple thing. Walk into the Birch Dining Commons during any mealtime and the options seem endless: salads, hot entrees, made-to-order options at the grill, a deli bar, a pasta bar, and several options for dessert.

Yet, behind the scenes, quite a lot of thought must go into every dish.

After all, the options should be fresh, locally sourced, and of the highest quality. They should meet strict nutritional and dietary standards—food allergies are always a concern—while also being incredibly tasty, so that what’s served on campus can compete with options at area restaurants. There should also be dishes that adhere to vegetarian, vegan, and other requirements, and enough variety to satisfy the pickiest eater.

Meeting all of those various requirements is a tall order for any dining staff, and it’s only been getting harder—particularly one without a dietician, nutritionist, computerized menu, or national-level purchasing power.

“There are many complications involved with managing a dining services in the 21st century,” said Williston’s CFO Charles McCullagh. “You have so many more things to consider.”
