To cap off their careers at the Williston Northampton School, two recent graduates and girls varsity lacrosse teammates have been recognized for their outstanding play by U.S. Lacrosse.

The Western Massachusetts Chapter of the national association named Maddie Hatch ‘14 an All-American. She and teammate Maggie Fitzgerald ’14 were also named Academic All-Americans. This is the second year both girls have received the latter honor.

Nominations of All-Americans are based on athletic statistics accrued over the season and recognize extraordinary achievements both on the field and in the classroom.

During her six years at Williston, Ms. Hatch, of Wilbraham, Mass., earned 14 athletic letters. She was captain of the girls varsity soccer team; earned five letters on the girls varsity hockey team; and earned four letters and two All-New England honors in girls lacrosse. As a co-captain of the girls varsity lacrosse team—with Ms. Fitzgerald and Taylor Potasky—Ms. Hatch helped lead the team to a 14-1 record.

Ms. Hatch, who will attend Colby College next year, was named the team’s most valuable player at the school’s athletic award ceremony in the spring. She also received the Alumnae Bowl and Blanket Award, in recognition of students who have participated on an Upper School team in every season.

Among her coaches, Ms. Hatch was known for her competitive fire and exceptional leadership.

“Maddie’s hard work and dedication is second to none,” said Jen Fulcher, head coach of the girls varsity lacrosse team. “Her leadership will guarantee the further development of the team.”

Ms. Fitzgerald, who will attend Northeastern University in the fall, was a three-year letter winner at Williston, including three letters in field hockey. During her three years with the team, girls varsity lacrosse went 42-2.

In the spring, Ms. Fitzgerald, of Longmeadow, Mass., received the Davis Award for overall contribution to girls varsity lacrosse, and the Blanket Award. During her senior year, she also completed a senior project recording stories from the community, and received an award for English.

As a player, Coach Fulcher described Ms. Fitzgerald as an “incredibly strong offensive threat.”

“Maggie is one of the smartest players I’ve been honored to coach,” Coach Fulcher said. “She sees the field really well and consistently sees the scoring opportunities, as well. She is a constant threat.”

The girls lacrosse program began at Williston in the 1970s, soon after Williston Academy and Northampton School for Girls combined to form the Williston Northampton School. Previous girls lacrosse players named to the All-American team include SA Fogelman ’10, two-time All-American Bridget Instrum ’12, and Karly Simpson ’13. Katie Cavanaugh ’12 was a two-time Academic All-American. Last year, along with Ms. Hatch and Ms. Fitzgerald, Karly Simpson ’13 was also named an Academic All-American.
