Athletic Hall of Fame: David “Duff” Tyler ’63

David “Duff” Tyler ’63 was a record-setting swimmer and soccer player. As part of the 1963 swimming team, he set national prep records in three events—50 free, 100 free, and 200 free—and was named All-American for both those events and three others—200 medley relay, 200 free relay, and 100 butterfly.

Mr. Tyler continued his domination at Trinity College, where he was named All-American three times, was a national champion in the 500 free, a national runner-up in the 200 free, and set seven Trinity records.

After college, Mr. Tyler returned to Williston for five years, where he was an assistant coach under Wilmot Babcock from 1968-1972 and head coach in 1972-1973. He coached 32 All-Americans. He moved to Florida in the fall of 1973 and coached at St. Andrew’s School for the next 22 years, amassing 627 wins. Under his leadership, the girls swimming team went undefeated in 1987 and won the state championship, as well as the national championship (as determined by Swimming World).

Mr. Tyler, who also coached the Bahamian National Team at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, was later inducted into the St. Andrew’s hall of fame. He made such a mark on the school, and created such a legacy, that St. Andrew’s swimming facility was later named after him.

“If you are a Williston alumnus from the ’60s thru ’80s, the name ‘Duff Tyler’ says it all,” wrote teammate Lou Kissling ’67. “Enough said.”

The Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, dinner, and reception will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013. Register to attend here.
