Winter sports were remarkable this year!
Winter sports were remarkable this year!

Athletic Director Mark Conroy reflected on Williston’s winter athletic program by sharing a few highlights of each team and recognizing award winners. “Knowing that numbers can tell a story,” he said during an assembly March 22, “I wanted to start by sharing just a few numbers relevant to our winter season.”

  • This winter, Williston was represented by 345 students coached by 39 coaches on 23 different teams.
  • All told, our winter teams represented Williston in 340 contests with 58 different schools in six states this winter.

Wildcat Swimmers and Divers Dominate Championships

swim team champsThe girls swimming and diving team traveled to Bristol, Rhode Island, this weekend and won their second straight NEPSAC Division 2 Swimming and Diving Championship with a meet-record 451 points, well ahead of second-place Dana Hall, which finished with 325.5 points.

The Wildcats dominated the meet from start to finish and set a number of meet and school records along the way. The 200 Medley Relay team of Sally Alrutz ’19 (Springfield), Natalie Aquadro ’17 (Northampton), Maya Soley ’18 (South Hadley), and Anabelle Farnham ’18 (Amherst) led off the meet with a victory, paced by the fastest 50 breaststroke split of the meet by Aquadro, to set a new school and meet record with a time of 1:52.09. There are cars that shake and rattle at the speeds Devin DeVerry can reach on skis. At that velocity, upwards of 50 mph, the slightest misstep, the tiniest caught edge, can lose a race, and knock even the most experienced athlete off balance.

But that’s where Devin shines.

On Wednesday Feb. 15, Devin, 17, dominated the New England Class B Championships, held at Okemo Mountain Resort in Ludlow, Vermont. He won both the Slalom and Giant Slalom races, an incredible feat for the Williston Northampton senior from Southwick, Massachusetts. Continue reading

Blog Post by Matthew Liebowitz

It takes three words for Coach Jacob Rivers to sum up Nate Balthazard, to accurately encapsulate the Williston Northampton football player’s guts, grit, and gridiron glory.

“He’s a warrior.”

However, for those who attended Nate’s February 6 signing ceremony, during which he formally committed to play football for Sacred Heart University in the fall, three words don’t tell the entire story.

“You’ll find people faster, or stronger, but you won’t find anyone who wants it more,” Rivers said. Continue reading

Hunter Adams Marches Forth with 100th Wrestling Win

Guest Blog Post by Matthew Liebowitz

“March Forth.” It’s the Williston Wrestling team’s motto, a cheer shouted after practice, a pre-match rallying cry. It’s a simple phrase, a two-word shout that has characterized senior Hunter Adams’ illustrious six-year career on the mat.

Adams, 18, recently racked up his 100th win, a feat he began tackling when he showed up at Williston in 7thgrade with no prior wrestling experience. However, he had spent enough time around his brother, Connor, and his fellow team members to know it was a sport he wanted to pursue. Continue reading

Athletic Director Mark Conroy took the podium on November 29 to congratulate Williston’s outstanding athletics programs, and to give special recognition to a handful of award winners who excelled during the fall season.

In his opening remarks, Conroy noted that this was the first time in 30 years that he hasn’t coached a team. Citing the athletes’ sportsmanship, spirit, and class on and off the field, Conroy said, “It was a real treat every Wednesday and Saturday to watch you compete.”

Horseback Riding

Conroy recognized four students, Aidenne Alden, Alex Foster, Momoka Oda, and Villard Xu, participants in the school’s horseback riding program, which trains at Fuller Horse Farm in Westhampton under the direction of Laura Etzel.

“Coach Laura Etzel says that the group was a great pleasure to work with, improved tremendously this fall, and are getting close to being able to compete in the spring season,” Conroy said. Continue reading

Early exposure to baseball helped Ian Ostberg craft not only skill at the game, but a love of getting better. He recalls that he played ball in the yard with his father for as long as he can remember, and started on a league at age 6. Over the years, he has worn the uniforms of the Northampton Legion and a summer program called AP Academy. But he’s been a Wildcat for his four high school years, and on November 16, he signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Division I Quinnipiac University, where, keeping it feline, he play as a Bobcat. Four-year senior Brian Sullivan has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Massachusetts Minutemen men’s lacrosse team. Sullivan, who has been playing lacrosse since fifth grade, has seen action in league play in South Hadley and for the Northeast Select Lacrosse League and Warrior Elite clubs.

Sullivan said he loves lacrosse because it is “a fast paced and unique” game.

“Brian is one of the most prolific scorers we have,” said Coach Christopher Dietrich. “He’s fast and he has a strong shot. He was a key part of our 2015 WNESSLA Division II championship.”

“I’m very excited and proud of Brian,” said his mother Brandy Sullivan. “With talented coaching he has grown into a strong force on the lacrosse field. I’m looking forward to a successful spring season to finish his Williston career,” she said.

When Caitlin Keefe ’17 was a second grader, her father James Keefe, initiated her into the game of lacrosse by handing her an “old cut-down guy’s stick,” and started coaching her. The early intervention payed off, and on November 16, Caitlin signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse for Bentley University.

Her coach, Jennifer Fulcher, describes Caitlin a fearless and tough competitor and a creative and impeccable scorer. “Her shot is strong and accurate and she is dangerous around the cage even under high defensive pressure,” Fulcher said. Continue reading
