Ball in the Hall Recap

2014_01_Pilgrim, Jeff_Ball in the Hall The boys varsity basketball team played MacDuffie on center court at the Basketball Hall of Fame.  They ended up losing by 15, but put up a good fight and played without one of their top players (who was out with a sprained ankle).  Matt Sulda ’14 played very well, as did Sam Blake ’14.  The court had remarkably little seating and overhanging levels blocked the sight lines for shooting.

Following the game, a group of alumni and I went over to Max’s Tavern for drinks. Everyone loved the new basketball pint glasses.  Mike Jackson (trustee) and Jim Brennan (trustee) showed up after the game.  Jim knows David Monroe ’83 through basketball.  David continues to play competitive basketball in the Springfield area and has a couple of nephews who are pretty good.

The Worst Day was the Best Day Recounts France ’83

Kim France ’83 was the editor of a very popular shopping magazine for 10 years, then one day she wasn’t.

“They say that sometimes we don’t truly realize what we are oppressed by until we are no longer oppressed by it,” said Ms. France in an article she wrote about how what could have been the worst day of her life, the day she was fired from said magazine, was actually the best thing that could have happened to her.

Since that day Ms. France has started a blog, Girls of a Certain Age. In her posts she sprinkles fashion advice with first date tips for women in their forties. “But mostly, of course, it is about shopping: online, in boutiques, in massive chains and tiny fleas and anywhere else that money can be exchanged for goods,” she said on the blog’s A Few Words page.

Top Northampton Restaurant List Features Alumna

MassLive.com named Joe’s Cafe, owned by Meaghan Sullivan ’01, a Northampton restaurant that has stood the test of time.” This is what reporter George Lenker had to say about the friendly, bustling, 70-year-old pizza joint:

Joe’s Cafe: If you’re looking for a definitive “townie” establishment, you will do no better than Joe’s. After all, it’s been around for more than 70 years. But unlike some more parochial venues, Joe’s is about as welcoming a place as you’ll find. If you sit at the bar (which is often crowded even during week nights), be prepared to get involved in a conversation. The cast of characters that populate this pizza parlor is both colorful and gregarious. And the decor alone is worth a visit.
