All about the Wildcats

Athletes of the Week – May 9th

cavanaghCody Cavanagh ‘17

Cody has been a big part of the boys’ varsity baseball teams’ success this season. On April 30th, he hit two home runs against Pomfret, which sparked a flurry of great at bats.  Since then, he has continued to hit well and play good defense.  He is currently second on the team with a .387 average and leads the team in runs scored with 12. Cody has a tremendous work ethic and sets a great example for his teammates. Continue reading

Varsity Softball In Playoff Hunt

strumWith big wins over Berkshire, Pomfret, Cheshire, and Deerfield this spring, Williston’s softball team controls its own destiny as the girls head into the final weeks of the season.  The results of their upcoming matches against Loomis, Kingswood, Suffield, and Stoneleigh Burnham will determine whether our Wildcats will be selected to compete in the Western New England Class A tournament.

A combination of young talent and veteran leadership has led Coach Amber Rodgers’ squad to a winning record after seven games.  Sophomore pitcher Jordan Strum has been nothing short of dominant in her performances on the mound;  she has averaged over 11 strike outs per game in the team’s four wins!  At bat, the Somersworth, New Hampshire, native hit a two-run homer against Deerfield, went 3-for-3 in a tight battle against Cushing, and was 4-for-4 in a one-run win over Cheshire!  Strum, who was recently selected to play in the Western New England All-Star game, has a bright future ahead of her.

Senior shortstop, and fellow Western New England All-Star, Delany Belinskas,  has had a standout season for Williston at bat.  Belinskas has been a consistent contributor to a high-powered offense that put up 19 runs against Berkshire, 16 runs against Pomfret, and 14 runs against Deerfield! The Florida native has had exceptional performances against Cushing, Cheshire, and Deerfield, where she went a combined 6-for-10, scoring 5 runs and driving in 5 teammates.

jonesSenior catcher Morgan Fisher and sophomore third baseman Gabby Jones have complemented Strum’s and Belinskas’ strong play  with great performances of their own.  Fisher was outstanding against Cheshire, where she went 3-for-4 and had 1 run and 2 RBIs, helping the team to a thrilling 5-4 win. Jones, who, like Strum, is a young, talented player for the Wildcats, went 3-for-4, and had 4 runs and 1 RBI in the 14-0 blanking of Deerfield.

Although great individual performances have been an important factor in the team’s wins this season, Coach Rodgers emphasized that “strong team play in nearly every game this spring has been the key to our success.  All players have contributed to our wins.”  She continued to praise all members of her team.  “Kassandra Orcutt ’19 has been an outstanding base runner for us,” she stated, “and Jada Goodrich ’16 has come in clutch in the outfield and at bat, where she hit a great ball to center field to secure a win against Cheshire when we were down by two runs.”

It will certainly be an exciting end of the season for our softball team. The Wildcats will need more strong team play in their final games as they look to secure a playoff birth. The team is back in action this Wednesday when they travel to Loomis.  Good luck, Wildcats!

Athletes of the Week – May 2nd

doucetteKyle Doucette ‘16

As a senior thrower, Kyle has competed well for the boys’ varsity track team this season. Last week he won the javelin and discus on both Wednesday and Saturday against difficult competition from NMH, WMA, Avon, and Suffield. Compared to some of his competitors, Kyle is relatively new to the sport, but his focus and attention to form during practice have paid off in a big way. As a team captain, he leads a positive example for his teammates by proving that hard work and attention to detail leads to success.

strumJordan Strum ‘18

Jordan has performed very well for the varsity softball team this season. On Wednesday in the circle against Cushing, Jordan had 12 strike outs, leading the way for the Wildcats. Again on Saturday against Deerfield, Jordan pitched another gem, hurling 12 strikeouts while only allowing 2 hits. At the plate, Jordan came in clutch for the Wildcats with a huge 2 run homer to help Williston get the win. Jordan’s competitiveness has helped spark the team to a very successful start to the season.

sierrosNikhil Sierros ‘21

Nikhil has played very well for the boys’ varsity tennis team so far this season. On Saturday, against Westminster, he grabbed another hard fought win playing at the number 2 position against a much older and stronger opponent. After losing the first set 4-6, he preceded to win the final two sets 7-5 and 6-0. He helped to spearhead the Wildcat’s eventual victory. Nikhill’s play has been a big part of the team’s successful season.

sampsonSabrina Sampson ’16

Sabrina had an incredible week on the golf course for the Varsity Girls’ Golf Team. On Wednesday, against Miss Porters and Loomis, she shot a three over par 38 at Southampton CC. Her low round won her medalist of the match, and it also happened to be her best score of her career as a Wildcat. On Saturday, she topped her previous score by shooting a new career low with a score of one over par 36, to earn a win over visiting Westminster. Sabrina had two birdies and four pars on her round as the match medalist for Williston.

spenceJack Spence ‘19

Jack has pitched well this season for the jv baseball team. Last week he continued his success on the mound with 7 innings of shutout ball with 6 strikeouts against the Berkshire Bears as Williston won 5-0.

harveyAnna Harvey ’18

Anna played exceptionally well in goal for the girls’ jv lacrosse team on Wednesday. She had 12 tough saves in the competitive game against Deerfield. She continues to bring a strong work ethic to each practice and serves as a model for her teammates in her willingness to challenge herself.

Williston Golf Teams Enjoy Mid-Season Winning Streaks

zaranek
Jacob Zaranek ’17 of South Deerfield was match medalist with a 37 last Wednesday vs Pomfret and WMA.

Williston’s Boys and Girls Varsity Golf teams have been  playing well below par in recent weeks—and in golf, that’s a good thing.

After a slow start to the season, which saw both teams’ records hover around .500, the Boys (9-3) have won 9 of their last 10 matches—narrowly losing to NMH by two strokes in the loss—while the Girls (7-3) are  carrying a four-match winning streak into this week’s matches.

Boys Head Coach Mike Fay spoke about his team’s talent. “They seem to be living up to their expectations as we hit mid-season. For the first time in my time coaching the Varsity team, we have a 9-hole team match average below 40 strokes,” he said.

Coach Fay added that a great team effort has also been a key to their success this spring. “We have had several players who earned match medalist this season, like Jacob Zaranek ’17, Jack Phelan ’18, and Tyler Senecal ’19, and we have also had consistently strong play from Nick Randolph ’17, Owen Randolph ’19, and Junya Ozaki ’18.”

Ozaki, a sophomore who comes from a family of accomplished professional golfers, echoed Coach Fay’s point about a harmonious and hard-working group. “Our team has been doing so well this season. We focus on every single practice and help each other as one.”  Phelan, a junior from East Longmeadow, also highlighted the team’s camaraderie. “I feel comfortable playing with, and for, my teammates, and that defiantly helps me play my best.”

As a result of the team’s strong play this season, they have enjoyed big wins over Avon Old Farms, Loomis, and Deerfield, who are typically among the top teams in New England.

Coach Fay said he feels confident about the remaining weeks of the season. “It should be an exciting second half,” he said, “and we feel capable of challenging for the season-ending Kingswood Invitational Tournament championship.”

Right now the Wildcats look forward to a rematch against Suffield this Wednesday. Suffield beat Williston by  two strokes in the first match of the season.

sampson
Sabrina Sampson ’16 shot a career-low 36 against Westminster!

While strong team play has also been a key to the Girls’ success this season, it has been the exceptional play of senior Sabrina Sampson that has led the Wildcats to wins over Hotchkiss, Loomis, Miss Porter’s, and Westminster over the past week.

Sampson shot a career-low 38 in her match against Loomis and Miss Porter’s on April 27, only to break her record in the very next match against Westminster, shooting an astounding 36.

Sampson highlighted the team’s  growing confidence as a key factor in its recent success. “I think it took a little while for the team to get going, and we all had to build confidence and prove to ourselves that we could win,” she said. “Once we all started improving, the team as a whole has been on a winning streak ever since.  In one of our earlier matches this season, we lost to Loomis, but we recently beat them, which was a great accomplishment for us.”

Head Coach Ann Pickrell praised her team’s improvement over the past month. “Everyone has worked hard on their swing at the practice range and improved their short game and course management,” she said. “As a result of their hard work, three players had their career-low rounds in our most recent match at Southampton Country Club of 36, 40, and 44; quite an improvement for the month of April.”

Coach Pickrell is optimistic about the  final weeks of the season. “All of our golfers are playing their best golf of the season,” she said. Girls Varsity Golf will travel to Westminster on Wednesday in hopes of extending its winning streak when the team takes on Choate, Loomis, and Westminster. Good luck, Wildcat golfers!

Signings to Bring Three Student Athletes College Play

Mark Wilson, Kyle Doucette, and Michael Dereus all signed with Division I college sports programs.
Mark Wilson, Kyle Doucette, and Michael Dereus signed with Division I college sports programs.

Three Williston athletes signed letters of intent to play sports at the college level on April 28 at an event in the Dodge Room of the Reed Campus Center. Michael Dereus ’16, who played football and ran track for two years, will attend Georgetown University. Kyle Doucette ’16 played basketball at Williston for two years and will attend LIU Post. Mark Wilson ’16 played football as a postgraduate and will attend Central Connecticut State University.

Michael Dereus played wide receiver for the Wildcats, and runs track. His football coach, Mark Conroy, praised both Dereus’ quickness at the game, and his character off the gridiron.

“Mike’s success on the field and in the classroom is a result of his dogged determination to take full advantage of his opportunities,” he said. “As a football player, Mike is blessed with exceptional natural gifts but what has allowed him to achieve at such a high level is his exceptional work ethic and desire to improve. Mike’s teachers and coaches all laud his outstanding work ethic and coach-ability.”

For Dereus, motivation to succeed came from the thrill of scoring a touchdown. “It feels like you are on top of the world,” he said. And success, indeed, arrived after he put in the time and effort. “Repetition is more important than pure ability,” he noted. His sister, Ruth Dereus, pointed to his determination, “Michael never allowed any barriers, whether it be on the field, in the classroom, or in his personal life, to distract him from his goals. I’ve seen the various transferable skills Michael acquired from the football field that he applied in life: determination, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, resilience, tenacity, and many more!”

Dereus recently set school records in both the 100- and 200-meter races, and for most touchdown receptions. He was named one of the top receivers in NEPSAC when he made the All-NEPSAC team this fall.

Kyle Doucette’s willingness to work hard at improving his game has brought him success on the basketball court. The center excels at defending the hoop—and he’s versatile, according to his coach, Michael Shelton.

“His ability to cover every position was vital to our success in the championship game,” Shelton said. “Offensively he is great around the basket and has improved his shooting over the last two years.”

Rich Doucette, Kyle’s father, added that his son is the “consummate team player. He’s never had a technical foul.” He added that since Kyle began playing the sport at age 9, he’s “absolutely loved basketball.” And at Williston, Kyle said, “I learned to push to my absolute best ability every play and never give up.”

Mark Wilson said football became a way for him to shake off the academic rigors of a postgraduate year. According to his mother, Sue Wilson, Mark has always had his “eye on the prize.” Since he came to Williston, she said, she’s seen his confidence and motivation grow.

“He has the passion and the will to go the distance,” she said. His coach, Mark Conroy, agreed. “He has great football instincts and could always be counted on to be one of our most consistent defensive playmakers,” Conroy said. “He loves football and plays the game with great passion.”

Congratulations, Mike, Kyle, and Mark!

Athletes of the Week – April 25th

ashendenBilly Asheden ‘17

Billy has started strong for the boys’ track team this season. On Wednesday, he won the 3,000 meter run against competition from Millbrook and Cheshire with a personal best time of 10:22. This will help elevate him in the Division II rankings, and sets him up nicely for the New England Meet. On Saturday at the Hunt Relays hosted at Deerfield Academy, Billy went toe to toe with Division I opponents in the 1200 leg of the Distance Medley Relay, then doubled back to run a great 800 leg of the 4×800.

bonavitaOlivia Bonavita ‘17

Olivia has been a big part of the girls’ varsity lacrosse teams success so far this season. On Saturday against Millbrook, she racked up 5 goals to help lead the Wildcats to the win. Not only was she a key goal scorer, she also performed very well as a defender. Olivia has been vital during transitions in the midfield and has also been an impact player on draws.

osullivanKevin O’Sullivan ‘18

Kevin has been a key contributor for the boys’ varsity lacrosse team so far this season. He went 47/59 on face offs and picked up 33 ground balls to help the boys’ varsity lacrosse teams go 2-1 last week. Kevin has dominated the face off X this year, winning 73% of his draws and leading the team in ground balls. Kevin’s team first mentality provides a great example for his teammates.

lordJulie Lord ’16

Julie has been key to the season’s 5-1 start for the girls’ varsity tennis team. She is currently undefeated in both singles and in doubles matches. Julie has won all of her singles matches in convincing fashion and has only given up 7 games in 5 matches!

cheneyPeter Cheney ‘20

Peter has had a great start to the season for the boys’ jv tennis team. Regularly playing older, bigger players at the number one singles slot, Peter has displayed a positive attitude in his matches so far this year. In his most recent match Peter gutted out a 9-8 win at Wilbraham and Monson, going the distance before pulling away in the tie breaker. Peter displays a positive tone day in and day out, and his attitude is infectious for the rest of the squad.

Five Williston Teams Have Great Starts to Spring Seasons

espinalVarsity Baseball remains undefeated at 5-0! Coach Sawyer’s talented group of players have recorded comfortable wins over Salisbury, Canterbury, and Millbrook, and 1-run wins over Gunnery and Pomfret.

Jared Freilich ’16 has been a force on the mound for the Wildcats, striking out 10 batters against Gunnery and picking up the win in a dominant performance against Canterbury. Patrick Beaton ’16 has been a key contributor on the mound as well, recording important saves in close matches to keep the team undefeated, while Daylon Thompson ’16 pitched well for the Wildcats in a close 3-2 win over Pomfret.

The Wildcat’s batting line up has resembled well-oiled machine this spring, with multiple players contributing offensively.  Ian Ostberg ’17’s key hits to start the game have helped the Wildcats jump out to an early lead in three out of their first five games.

Beaton, Zach Bernstein ’16, Chris Espinal ’17, Cody Cavanagh ’17, J.T. Chamberlain ’17, Derek Zewinski ’17, and Mike Mieczkowski ’17 have all had key hits and RBIs to lead the powerful offense to 37 runs in their first five games, an average of almost 7.5 runs per game!  Clearly this Wildcat team is very talented and can rely on many players to make an impact on the game when the team needs it.

Varsity Baseball will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to Cheshire on Wednesday and Wilbraham and Monson on Thursday.

swazWilliston’s Girls Varsity Lacrosse team is 7-0!  Convincing wins over Hotchkiss, Wilbraham and Monson, Miss Porter’s, Berkshire, Westminster, and Millbrook have our Wildcats outscoring their opponents 89-22!  The only close game for the girls thus far this season was a thrilling 11-10 OT road victory over St. Mark’s School.  Coach Fulcher’s team has a great deal of momentum heading into the second half of the season, where they will face a talented Loomis team, as well as other strong programs.

A number of talented players on the offensive and defensive ends of the field have helped lead the team to an undefeated start to the season. While there have been many goal scorers for the Wildcats, two players have recorded exceptional statistics so far this spring. Meg Swazlowski ’16 has led the Wildcat attack with 25 goals and 22 assists, and fellow senior Olivia Bonavita is second in scoring, with 18 goals, and has posted 6 assists.

Other notable goal scorers for the Wildcats have been Madison Fulcher-Melendy ’18 with 11 goals, Caitlin Keefe ’17 with six, Fiona Bundy ’18 with four, and Caroline Wysocki ’16 with three.  It was Wysocki’s goal in overtime that gave the Wildcats their overtime win against St. Mark’s! Equally important to the girls’ undefeated record has been their strong defensive effort, led by goalie Tara Sullivan and defender Chloe Harris.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse will look to continue their unbeaten run when they host Deerfield Academy on Wednesday, April 27.

fosterWith wins over NMH, Miss Porter’s, Wilbraham, Cushing, and powerhouse Westminster, the Girls Varsity Tennis team reached spring long weekend with a 5-1 record! The Wildcats suffered their only defeat of the season to a talented Deerfield team last Saturday in a closely contested match.

Co-Captains Abbie Foster ’16 and Caroline Borden ’16 have been instrumental in the team’s success. They are undefeated in match play at #3 doubles, and both girls’ strong leadership skills have helped a talented group of tennis players remain focused. “I could not be happier with our captains,” said coach John Chiavaroli. “Abbie and Caroline have done a phenomenal job of leading the group, and they are an important reason for our early-season success.”

Williston’s #1, Julie Lord ’16, has had an exceptional start to the season, winning all of her singles and doubles matches comfortably; she has only lost 7 games in 6 matches!  #2 Toula Sierros ’16 has dedicated a tremendous amount of time in the off-season to developing her game.  She hits her serve and ground strokes with great deal of power, and so far this season many of her opponents could not handle her pace. #3 Ray Stein ’16 is an awesome competitor whose attacking game, comprised of a big first serve and forehand, has helped her win the majority of her singles and doubles matches.

#4 Danielle Grant ’16 is talented player whose deceptive, flat shots set up her power game perfectly. She recorded an impressive 10-0 win against her opponent from Wilbraham and Monson.  #5 Fuka Iwama ’18, the only underclassman in the top 6, is highly talented as well. When she is on her game, she can play with the very best players in the league. Fuka played some of her best tennis this past Wednesday to seal the 5-4 win over Westminster, an opponent that the Wildcats have not beaten since 2009!

Rounding out the singles rankings is #6 Abbie Foster ’16, whose consistent play and enthusiasm on court has helped her win tight matches against NMH and Westminster.  #2 doubles player, Lizzie Sheline ’16, has been a great competitor this spring.  Much like Borden and Foster, Sheline, and her partner, Stein, are a great team on court.  Lizzie is incredible at net, and her opponents often find it difficult to get the ball past her.

Girls Varsity tennis will continue their season this Wednesday when they travel to local rivals Suffield, where talented, upcoming players Haley Beecher ’18 and Sabrina Liew ’18 will play an important role for the team.

dereusBoth the Boys and Girls Track teams are undefeated after recording impressive wins over Berkshire, Canterbury, Cheshire and Millbrook.  Williston’s talented group of athletes have already recorded impressive stats, including many personal records, on their way to winning all of their meets this spring. The track teams are in mid-season form, and they seem focused on continuing their success deep into May.

The boys team has already racked up a number of impressive highlights. Nick Hill ’17, of Northampton, won both of his 1500m races.  Mike Dereus ’16 is undefeated in the 100m and 200m sprints this season.  Noah Clack ’18 recorded his personal best throw of 138’ when he won the javelin for the second week in a row, and Henry Chen ’16 is undefeated in the 110 high hurdles.  Finally, Billy Ashenden ’17 set a personal best time of 10:20 in the 3000m, and junior Soma Mizobuchi won the 800m with a new personal record at Cheshire this past weekend.

rockwellThe girls team has been just as dominant as the boys, winning their meets by large margins as well.  Senior Rachel Rockwell has had an outstanding start to the season, earning first place finishes in 4x100m relay, 100HH, the javelin, and the high jump.  Sideya Dill ’16, Elin Blomquist ’18, Catherine King ’19, Kylie Tracanna ’17, and Rockwell have combined to help the 4x100m team remain undefeated. The same is true for the 4x400m relay, where Natalie Aquadro ’17, Dill, Izzy Cheney ’20, Maya Soley ’19, and Maddie Scott ’16 have teamed up effectively to record wins in both meets.  Dill has also recorded a first- and a second-place finish in the 100m, while Izzy Cheney has a first- and second-place finish in the 1500m. Cheney and Soley have split race wins in the 800m, and Aquadro has finished second in both races. Alexis Ryan’17 and Kai McCalla ’17 have been dominant in the shot put, discus and javelin, and Williston’s pole vaulters—Tracanna, Trixie Willems ’19, and Emma Reynolds ’17—have yet to be topped. Finally, Natalie Fontenot ’17 rounds out the Wildcats’ impressive performances thus far this spring with a win in the 3000m.

Both teams are in action this Wednesday when they travel to NMH to take on the Hoggers and Wilbraham and Monson.

Two Senior Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

HT and MR
Meg Rickard and Hannah Touzos

Surrounded by family, coaches, and teammates, two Williston Northampton School seniors signed letters of intent for Division I ice hockey teams on April15. Meg Rickard has agreed to play for the Providence College Friars and Hannah Touzos signed on to play for the University of New Hampshire Wildcats.

Scoring the game-winning goal against a fabled foe earned Rickard a special place in the hearts of her ice hockey teammates, and is illustrative of her role on the team, according to her coach, Girls Varsity Hockey Head Coach Christa Talbot-Syfu. “Meg has stepped up in important moments when she’s been needed,” Talbot-Syfu said.

The forward led the team in points scored this year, her strongest in her three years at Williston Northampton School. “She finished strong,” Talbot-Syfu said. “She’s talented, skilled, and presents an offensive threat.”

MR and parents
Meg Rickard and her father Jim and mother Elizabeth

Rickard, who is from Coventry, RI, starting playing hockey when she was 8—older than many of her teammates. As a child, she watched her brother and father, who played college hockey, and absorbed their love of the game. “She started late but she was filling up the net from the get go,” said Jim Rickard, her father. As a child and early in her hockey career she practiced at the rink at Providence College.

“Growing up I was always an offensive type player who loved to score goals and that was it,” she said. “Coming to Williston, Coach Talbot was on me every day to be a more consistent player in all three zones. For me, the biggest lesson I have learned from Coach Talbot would be not to take anything for granted and always try to play for something bigger than myself. That motivated me to be my best every day.”

Jim Rickard took note of her progression on the rink. “We’re so proud of her and what she’s managed to learn over the last three years at Williston.”

Meg Rickard will be joining her Williston classmate Rachel Rockwell ’16 on the ice at Providence College. “I am so excited to be going to school I grew up around. My parents and grandparents, who have helped me get to where I am today, can come see as many games as they want.”

Hannah and family
Hannah Touzos and her family: sister Jackie, mother Karen, father Rich, and brother Daniel

Hannah Touzos ’16 started skating at about 3 years old in the backyard rink at her home in Foxboro, MA. “She really enjoyed skating and whacking away at the puck and people,” according to her father, Rich Touzos.

Those whacking skills, honed throughout the years, have paid off. Hannah Touzos, a forward, will continue to be a Wildcat—but at the college level at UNH .

“Hannah is a worker. She’s a very smart player, a very good forechecker,” said Talbot-Syfu. “She’s a tremendous penalty killer.”

Touzos has played hockey all four years at Williston. Before that she played in youth leagues in eastern Massachusetts, where she competed in two national tournaments.

“When Hannah joined the Williston Girls Varsity Team in her freshman year we knew she had a uphill battle for playing time,” Rich Touzos said. “This made Hannah’s competitiveness shine. She worked extra hard in the off-season to return in her second season as a stronger and improved player.

“In her third year Hannah finally was able to compete and play a major role in the success of the team,” he said. “We were so proud of her grit and determination to help her team.”

Bottom line: Touzos earned her chance to play. “She worked hard and her determination to play at the highest level never left her sight,” Touzos said. “She wanted it and she accomplished her goal. We are so proud.”

Congratulations, Meg and Hannah!

Athletes of the Week – April 18th

zaranekJacob Zaranek ‘17

Jacob has played well through the start of the boys’ varsity golf team’s season. As the teams captain, he is an extremely talented player, and a great mentor for his teammates. Last weekend, Jacob had a great performance helping the Wildcats defeat Loomis Chaffee and Avon Old Farms, two of the top teams in prep school golf. Jacob led the way as the match medalist, shooting the lowest score out of all 18 golfers with a 73 in challenging conditions. The leadership Jacob exhibited through the highs and lowz of the past week epitomizes the importance of optimism, confidence, and determination.

jonesGabby Jones ‘18

Gabby is off to a great start to the season for the varsity softball team. On Friday she filled in at catcher, a new position for her, because her team was in need. On Saturday against Berkshire, Gabby went 3 for 3 at the plate scoring five runs and blasting a grand slam home run to help lead the team over Berkshire.

espinalChris Espinal ‘17

Chris has played a big part in the varsity baseball team’s undefeated start to the season. He is hitting .455 (5-11) with 2 doubles in 4 games thus far. In addition to his batting average, Chris also leads the team in RBI’s with 6.  Most of which have come with 2 outs. Not only has he performed well at the dish, but he has also been dependable in right field as well.  Most importantly, Chris is a consummate teammate who leads by example during practices and games and has a tremendous work ethic, constantly trying to perfect his craft.

rockwellRachel Rockwell ‘16

Rachel started her season for the girls’ varsity track team in winning fashion. She took first place in the javelin, 100m hurdles, and high jump helping the Wildcats score numerous points. Despite this being her first season high jumping, Rachel recorded a winning jump of 4’8″. She continued her dominance in the javelin, hurling the implement 109’3″. Rachel capped off an impressive day finishing the 100m hurdles with a run of 16.0 seconds flat. After the first meet, Rachel easily qualified for New England’s in all three events. As the captain of the team, she has a tireless work ethic and is an inspiration to all of her teammates.

dereusMike Dereus ‘16

Mike is off to a superb start to the season for the boys’ varsity track team. In his first meet of the season, he won the 100m, 200m, and long jump to lead the team in scoring for the meet. His times of 11.1 in the 100m and 22.9 in the 200m were on pace with some of his fastest from last year, and are sure to put him right in the thick of NEPSAC contention again. Likewise, his jump of 21′ 1.5″ matches some of his best efforts from last season. All three easily qualify him for New England’s. As the team captain, Mike leads by example and is a great teammate to the younger kids on the squad.

whippleEmily Whipple ’19

Emily’s had a great week for the girls’ jv lacrosse team. Moving out of her previous defensive position and into the midfield, she has proved to be one of the fittest players on the squad and exemplifies a never quit attitude.  Emily scored three goals this week for the Wildcats during her offensive debut, and in addition has started taking the draws for the team, one of the most important positions on the field.
