Campus Suffers Power Outage: Information Update

October 28, 2011:

Due to yesterday’s storm, our campus is currently without power. Classes in both the Upper and Middle Schools are cancelled for tomorrow and employees are asked to stay home, unless they are Physical Plant, Dining Services, or Security personnel and are scheduled and able to work. Any parent of a boarding student who has not yet returned to campus is asked to please keep their child at home. Boarding parents who wish to come to campus to pick up their child may do so with dean’s permission, which can be obtained by calling 413-527-1523. Please monitor this website for further updates.

Poet Nikky Finney Visits Campus October 27

Poet Nikky Finney, recently nominated for a National Book Award, will be visiting the Williston Northampton School campus on Thursday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. as part of this year’s Writers’ Workshop. She is the author of four collections of poetry: On Wings Made of Gauze; Rice, recipient of a PEN America Open Book Award; The World Is Round, recipient of the 2004 Benjamin Franklin Award for Poetry; and Head Off & Split. A recipient of the Kentucky Foundation for Women Artists Fellowship Award and The Governor’s Award in the Arts, Finney has taught at Smith College and Berea College, and is a former faculty member at Cave Canem, a writing home for African American poets.

Grubbs Gallery Exhibits Portraits and Figurative Sculptures by “Go Figure” Members

Members of Go Figure Sculpture Studios in Holyoke, MA, will present a group show of portraits and figurative sculptures in clay and bronze at the Grubbs Gallery in the Reed Campus Center of The Williston Northampton School from November 3 through December 30, 2011.  An artists’ reception will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2:00-5:00 p.m. Participating artists are:  Esthela Bergeron, Harriette Block, Elizabeth Caine, LeaAnn Cogswell, Cynthia Consentino, Viki Gable, Betty Gerich, Lee Hutt, Betsy Koscher, Christina Mastrangelo, and Lauren Mills.

Science and Art Observations on Smith College Field Trip

On Thursday, October 13, Middle School students took part in an interdisciplinary, collaborative field trip designed by teachers Jane Lucia (science) and Natania Hume (art). The trip took advantage of the wonderful resources at nearby Smith College in order to touch on the disciplines of art, science, English, and geography.

The trip began with a guided tour of the Lyman Plant House, which is a series of greenhouses containing plants from many regions and climates all over the world. In the plant house, students were given time to observe a plant of interest to them, making notes and using as many descriptive adjectives as possible. They later exchanged papers and made drawings according to each other’s descriptions.

Williston Presents “Eurydice” by Sarah Ruhl

Eurydice PosterThe Williston Northampton School presents its annual fall play on October 20-22 and October 27-29 in the Williston Theatre. This year’s offering is Eurydice by Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Ruhl. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. except Friday, October 21, when the show begins at 8:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $5 and may be reserved at (413) 529-3434 or the box office email. Admission is free for Williston families on October 21.

Ruhl’s dream-like play, written in 2001, is a meditation on loss, love, and our hopes for true connection. This devastatingly breathtaking retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth creates a world in which worms deliver letters, stones talk, and rivers make people forget.
