Marielle McHale ’18 – Varsity girls hockey

Marielle has had a terrific season thus far for the girls varsity hockey team. Last week she had 7 goals and 2 assists in the team’s 3 tournament victories at the Winchendon Holiday tournament.  Marielle led the team with three goals in their 4-0 win over Lawrence. She had two goals in wins against both Winchendon and in the championship game against NMH.  Marielle’s goals came from tremendous puck movement with her line mates and some strong individual efforts. Marielle leads by example through her “team first” mentality and her “can do” attitude. Continue reading →

Ben Normandin ’19 – Varsity Wrestling

Ben has had a great start to the season for the varsity wrestling team. He has wrestled with great control and poise in the two opening weeks of the season.  Ben managed two pins on Saturday including an incredible 9 second fall.  This ties the fastest pin on record in at least 17 years of at wrestling Williston.  Ben is an extremely dedicated athlete who always demonstrates sportsmanship on and off the mat. Bina Sweet ’17 – Varsity Wrestling

Bina has had an exemplary start to the season for the boys varsity wrestling team.  On Saturday, he managed a come from behind pin over a very talented Loomis opponent to ensure a Williston team victory.  It was the final match of the day, and it was by far the day’s most exciting match. As a team captain, Bina is a role model of discipline and hard work and provides a positive example for everyone on the team on how to be a great teammate. Continue reading →

Williston Recognizes Fall Athletic Award Winners

Athletic Director Mark Conroy took the podium on November 29 to congratulate Williston’s outstanding athletics programs, and to give special recognition to a handful of award winners who excelled during the fall season.

In his opening remarks, Conroy noted that this was the first time in 30 years that he hasn’t coached a team. Citing the athletes’ sportsmanship, spirit, and class on and off the field, Conroy said, “It was a real treat every Wednesday and Saturday to watch you compete.”

Horseback Riding

Conroy recognized four students, Aidenne Alden, Alex Foster, Momoka Oda, and Villard Xu, participants in the school’s horseback riding program, which trains at Fuller Horse Farm in Westhampton under the direction of Laura Etzel.

“Coach Laura Etzel says that the group was a great pleasure to work with, improved tremendously this fall, and are getting close to being able to compete in the spring season,” Conroy said. Continue reading →

Ian Ostberg ’17 – Varsity Football

Ian finished his standout career with another strong performance this past Saturday against Brunswick.  The senior quarterback threw for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns while also leading the team in rushing versus a very strong Brunswick team.  Ian also contributed on both special teams and on the defensive side of the ball.   As a senior captain Ian was not only the hardest worker on the team, but he also made all of his teammates around him better. Williston Student Duncan LeXander Signs to Presbyterian College

Duncan LeXander is headed home, or at least back to the region where he spent most of his life. But like most people who go back to where they’re from after being away, LeXander is returning a changed man, a scholar and athlete on a path to personal and professional success.

On Wednesday, November 16, LeXander formally committed to play Division 1 basketball at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. Beginning in the fall, LeXander, a 6’8” shooting guard, will suit up for the PC Blue Hose to compete in the NCAA Division 1 Big South Conference. The Blue Hose schedule will see the 18-year-old rising star, decked out in PC’s traditional royal blue and garnet, face off against top-notch competition including Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Boise State, and Tennessee. Four Wildcats Sign LOIs to College

Four Williston students signed letters of intent to play college sports. Caitlin Keefe will attend Bentley University and play lacrosse. Duncan LeXander will attend Presbyterian College and play basketball. Ian Ostberg signed to play baseball at Quinnipiac University. Williston Student Ian Ostberg Signs to Quinnipiac University

Early exposure to baseball helped Ian Ostberg craft not only skill at the game, but a love of getting better. He recalls that he played ball in the yard with his father for as long as he can remember, and started on a league at age 6. Over the years, he has worn the uniforms of the Northampton Legion and a summer program called AP Academy. But he’s been a Wildcat for his four high school years, and on November 16, he signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Division I Quinnipiac University, where, keeping it feline, he play as a Bobcat. Williston Student Brian Sullivan Signs to UMass

Four-year senior Brian Sullivan has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Massachusetts Minutemen men’s lacrosse team. Sullivan, who has been playing lacrosse since fifth grade, has seen action in league play in South Hadley and for the Northeast Select Lacrosse League and Warrior Elite clubs.

Sullivan said he loves lacrosse because it is “a fast paced and unique” game.

“Brian is one of the most prolific scorers we have,” said Coach Christopher Dietrich. “He’s fast and he has a strong shot. He was a key part of our 2015 WNESSLA Division II championship.”

“I’m very excited and proud of Brian,” said his mother Brandy Sullivan. “With talented coaching he has grown into a strong force on the lacrosse field. I’m looking forward to a successful spring season to finish his Williston career,” she said.

Williston Student Caitlin Keefe Signs to Bentley University

When Caitlin Keefe ’17 was a second grader, her father James Keefe, initiated her into the game of lacrosse by handing her an “old cut-down guy’s stick,” and started coaching her. The early intervention payed off, and on November 16, Caitlin signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse for Bentley University.

Her coach, Jennifer Fulcher, describes Caitlin a fearless and tough competitor and a creative and impeccable scorer. “Her shot is strong and accurate and she is dangerous around the cage even under high defensive pressure,” Fulcher said. Continue reading →
