Taming the Wildcat

by Nate Gordon ’16 on The Willistonian

In 1939, The Willistonian conducted a poll to decide Williston’s nickname. Now, almost three-quarters of a century later, The Willistonian will conduct a second poll to vote on the official design of the Williston Wildcat. Since the Wildcat is a common team mascot used by many schools, “we want people from both within the community and outside, to say, ‘hey, that’s the Williston wildcat!’”, says Athletic Director Mark Conroy.

Williston’s “Friendly” New Neighbor

by Brendan Hellweg

Since 2002, when the Friendly’s that was located in the Reed Center was replaced with a school-owned facility, the Stu-Bop, alums and current students alike have clamored for Friendly’s to open a new location so that students can get their sundae fix between classes. After 11 years of this pressure, the school has brokered a deal with Friendly’s Ice Cream, LLC to construct a restaurant on campus. Due to the success of the Stu-Bop, a new location has been proposed that would not compete so directly with the store: the Robert Parker Clapp Memorial Library.

After a two-month summer renovation, tables, a kitchen, and the cashier’s ruby-red booth will take up the majority of the library’s second floor. In an interview with a Friendly’s spokesperson, she said that Williston’s “track record as an exceptional private educational institution won’t be damaged by removing roughly one third of the books. During a quick tour of the current library, I saw literally 12 books on JFK’s presidency. If they cut that down to one book, we’d have room for a rainbow sprinkles dispenser!”

End of Add Period Today

Today (Thursday, March 28) marks the end of the first week of school for Trimester 3.  This is the end of the “Add Period.”  As of the end of the school day, no further additions of courses will be considered.  Under very unusual and compelling circumstances, students may still be permitted to drop courses, but the period for adding new courses ends today.  The deadline for dropping courses coincides with the recording of Interim Trimester 3 grades and comments, which this year is April 25.  Seniors should keep in mind that carrying a full five-course load for Trimester 3 is a graduation requirement.   Have a great trimester!

Photographers’ Lecture Series 2013: Ron Wyatt

Sports photographer Ron Wyatt will present the next in Williston Northampton School’s ongoing lecture series on Thursday, April 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Dodge Room, Reed Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Mr. Wyatt was assigned by Kodak to photograph the Summer Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008, and is a self-taught photographer. In his presentation, Mr. Wyatt will talk about his experiences covering the Olympic Games, as well as finding the right equipment and camera set-up, planning a shooting strategy, and the importance of knowing the game. This is a perfect way to learn about sports photography from a pro, and see images of milestone sporting events.

As Mr. Wyatt notes on his website, his “first experience with photography was an unsuccessful photo documentation of my honeymoon.” Since then, Mr. Wyatt has covered the NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball, among others. His photos have appeared in various publications such as USA Today, Black Enterprise Magazine, Time Magazine, Newsweek, TV Guide, and ESPN. He currently covers corporate assignments for companies that include Six Flags, Eastman Kodak, Continental Airlines, CVS, Pepsico, and Verizon.

To the Williston Community

Dear Williston Community,

It’s with shock and a deep sense of loss that I share with our community the sad news of the sudden passing of Ed Chmura.  Mr. Chmura passed away on Sunday evening.  He was a 31-year employee of the school, hired in 1982. Mr. Chmura worked initially in the Business Office, but in 1993 he moved to Physical Plant, where he had a variety of responsibilities.

Those who worked most closely with Mr. Chmura—his colleagues in Physical Plant in particular; faculty who were teachers and coaches to his children; current students who are friends to his daughter Jenny ’12 and son Brian ’10—you know better than any the magnitude of this loss.

For those on campus who were particularly close to Mr. Chmura and feel counseling support would be helpful, Ben Thompson is available to provide guidance or to refer you to a counseling service off-campus. He can be contacted at Health Services at 529-3234.

I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that Mr. Chmura was a cherished long-time member of the Williston Community. He will be sorely missed, and we will continue to keep his wife Marie, his children Brian and Jenny, and the rest of his family in our thoughts and prayers. Members of the Williston family will grieve in the days, weeks, and months to come.

Our Physical Plant staff will be processing this news today, and so I ask that we keep any requests there to a bare minimum.

More information regarding services will be forthcoming.

Sincerely,
Mr. Hill

Editor’s note:

Calling hours are Monday, April 1, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Rd. Northampton, Mass.
