Luma Mufleh to Speak at Wattles Perry ’77 Lecture

Fodbold.  Fuβball.  Pêl-droed.  Sokker.  Zúqiú.  Soccer.

Soccer is an international pastime and Luma Mufleh has used it as a stepping-stone to foster harmony and order in the lives of Clarkston, Georgia’s refugee children; children who have witnessed the worst of our modern age.

Born in Amman, Jordan, Mufleh moved to Atlanta a year and a half after graduating from Smith College.  One day, as she drove down a street in Clarkston, she happened upon a group of young boys playing soccer in the street.  “They played without some of the most basic equipment–but they played for the sheer enjoyment of the game–something that reminded [her] of home,” she said.

Assemblies This Week

I’d like to remind everyone that we will meet in the Chapel tomorrow for an Upper School Assembly at 8:30 am.  We will be seated by Advisories. This is according to the Community Meeting Schedule that was published earlier this year.  On Friday, we will meet in an All-School Assembly in the gymnasium at 8:30 am with our guest speaker, Luma Mufleh. Please note: This is a rescheduled date due to the speaker’s availability.  Again, we will be seated by Advisories with a special seating chart.

Thank you!

“We Will Remember Al”: A Yearbook Dedication

The following dedication by Molly Newton was originally published in The Williston Northampton School 2007 Log.

Please and thank you, two simple little words we all could spell by third grade. two simple little words many of us forgot sometime in those long years between third grade and our arrival at Williston; two simple words that Al Lavalle constantly reminded us to say, and never let us get away with forgetting.

Remembering Al Lavalle

Dear Williston Community,

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I report the passing of a highly respected and beloved member of our community. Al Lavalle, a 13-year employee in our Physical Plant Department, died on Sunday, November 25 after a long battle with colon cancer.

One of Al’s positions on campus was working in The Cage in the Athletic Center. It was there that he had a tremendous impact on Williston students and acquired such a great deal of respect that the yearbook was dedicated to him in 2007. Mr. Lavalle, a lover of athletics and a major presence in local youth sports leagues, bestowed life lessons on Williston students about integrity and treating others with respect. His positive effect on the lives of those in this community will long be felt.

Math Resource Center Hours

Welcome back everyone!

The Math Resource Center has had a great start this year!  Many of you have taken advantage of our excellent math tutors either during the class day or during study hall on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings.  Keep up the great effort everyone!

As a reminder, the resource center offers ‘drop-in’ style extra which means you can come without the need to make an appointment.  You can stay for 20 mins or an hour depending upon what you need.  Please make sure you have your book and your resources because the center does not have those materials.  Come armed with books and with questions!

This trimester’s schedule is basically the same as last trimester’s except for a couple of personnel changes (see below).

Hope your vacations were fun and relaxing.

Ms. Anderson
