Thanking Claire Frierson: A Call for Submissions

20120601_Schnaittacher_224She’s taught the oui’s and sí’s to countless students, lead trips to countries across the world, and has been a leader among French teachers. Now, after 32 years at Williston Northampton, Mme Claire Frierson is planning to retire—and the Language Department is creating a book of messages in thanks.

Whether you took one of her French and Spanish classes, or traveled with her to Canada, France, Honduras, Spain, Mexico, or the Dominican Republic, we know that Mme Frierson made an impression on your life. As a way to thank her for her long service—which has included chairing the Language Department, founding the school’s annual Quebec trip, advising the “As Schools Match Wits” team, and supervising the student newspaper, The Willistonian—the school is collecting messages of gratitude from former students and colleagues of Mme. Frierson.

As well as her work in the Language Department, those who know her may recall Mme Frierson making costumes for the Williston theater, presenting Diversity Conference workshops, and serving several terms on the Faculty Council. Her devotion to the French language went beyond the classroom—leading her to chair the American Association of the Teachers of French, and serve as Administrator for the National French Contest in Western Massachusetts. In 2005, Mme. Frierson received the Clapp Grant for independent study and French immersion in Morocco.

Please submit your messages of gratitude and memories to Language Department Head Nat Simpson at nsimpson@williston.com. The collected submissions will be presented to Mme. Frierson upon her retirement at the end of the academic year.

Spring Ultimate Begins in April

Before everybody scatters to the wind for Spring Break, I wanted to let you know that in early April we will be resuming our pick-up Ultimate games on Sawyer Field on Tuesdays at 6:15.

These will be informal games for players of all ability/experience levels—separate from those played by our new Ultimate team—open to anybody in the Williston community. If you’ve always wanted to play, but haven’t dared, this might be a good opportunity to “get your feet wet.”

Hope to see how out there some warm Spring evening…

Director of Psychological Counseling Services

Poetry on Campus

Hey Wildcats!

So you may notice in the next couple of days some large poster boards with different titles. These boards will be placed in different locations around campus. On these boards, we hope you will contribute a line or two of your OWN poetry that connects back to the board’s specific theme. Use your imagination and be creative! Once the boards are full, we’ll be sure to send another email with the completed poems that you guys have written!

Thank you so much for your cooperation. We hope everyone will have fun with this and keep it professional, as this is for our final assessment in Modern American Poetry!

Thanks again,
Hannah Gagnon, Paul Accorsi, Nell Heidinger

Prizes for Poetry

Hey guys,

As you may have noticed recently, the stairs in the schoolhouse have been sporting this poem:

Spring is coming
The bees are humming
Your package and allowance are forthcoming
With many poets
I bet you didn’t know it
You’ll be getting poems
About your favorite season
So that’s the reason
Go to the campus store

~The purpose of this is to direct you to the campus store!

There will be inspiring poems about spring and warm weather for all of you to pick up on the counter of the campus store when you are passing by.

We also have put poems on your packages!

So, make sure to take a poem and/or read the poem on your package because…

We will reward you with prizes!

Here are the criteria:

If the poem you pick up has the word…

“Spring”

“Flower”

“Rain”

or

“Birds”

Send either:

lboland@williston.com or sbelinskas@williston.com or ekimball@williston.com an email and you shall receive your prize!

This is for our senior poetry final project so please participate if you can and shoot lots of emails our way!
