A Singing School…And So Much More

201111017_Schnaittacher_215 As Williston is noted as a “singing school,” our student and faculty musicians have a significant impact on the community. Ranging from singers to jazz band performers, our school musicians perform a wide variety of musical genres, and the beauty of the music brought to the community is very meaningful. Although music is not a regular part of our daily routine or as main stream as athletics, Williston shares and builds community around music through our always well-attended concerts.

Wednesday Menu: Jan. 9

Breakfast
French toast, sausage, home fries, hot cereal, yogurt, assorted eggs and omelets at the grill, fruit smoothies

Lunch
Tomato soup or soup du jour, grilled cheese, grilled cheese on wheat, American chop suey with meat, vegetarian curried lentil stew, corn, assorted wraps-roast beef  and tuna

Pasta station: pasta, marinara sauce, ratatouille vegetables

Dinner
Grilled bratwurst, Dijon chicken, potato pancakes with assorted toppings, sweet and sour cabbage, Prince Edward Isle blend vegetables, vegetarian goulash

Pasta station: cheese manicotti, marinara sauce, meat sauce and alfredo sauce

Starting the New Year With Confidence

Last Wednesday, the Parent’s Association held our first meeting of 2013, and hosted Catherine Sanderson, Associate Professor of Psychology at Amherst College, who presented a talk called “Five Strategies for Parenting a More Confident Teenager: What the Most Current Research Shows.”

We think we speak for everyone who was in the room when we say this was completely fascinating. Professor Sanderson is a gifted speaker, despite a post-cold touch of laryngitis, and captivated a crowd of concerned parents and faculty/staff.  We will get personal for a moment, and put it right out there that being a parent of a preteen or adolescent involves tremendous effort–with no reciprocal encouragement about 90 per cent of the time. Hearing Professor Sanderson identify our anxiety provoking and confusing  parenting moments as the norm was very comforting.

Lunch
Tortellini or Caldo Verde soup, cheese calzones, Stromboli with turkey, ham and swiss cheese, vegetable stromboli, tomato or pesto sauce, vegetable and pasta sauté, zucchini and summer squash

Grill: teriyaki chicken and vegetables with rice
Pasta station: pasta, marinara sauce, herb sauce and mushroom medley sauté

Dinner
Roast turkey sliced to order, couscous pilaf, mashed potato, bread stuffing, gravy, peas and baby carrots, butternut squash, apple yam casserole, stuffed sole

Grill:French toast
Pasta station: fettuccini, marinara sauce, meat sauce, sweet Italian sausage

“Doodle” Selected for SAG Showcase

“Doodle,” a film by Charles Frank ’13, has been selected for inclusion in the Screen Actors Guild Foundation’s Short Film Showcase and will be shown during the upcoming screening on Wednesday, January 30.

According to SAG, the presentation starts at 7 p.m. and will feature eight shorts (for a total running time of approximately 80 minutes). The screening will be followed by a 30 minute Q+A with the filmmakers.

The event will be held at the Engelman Recital Hall Theater at Baruch College Performing Arts Center, located at 55 Lexington Ave.

Lunch
Vegetarian split pea or mulligatawny soup, BBQ pork fillet, vegetarian blackend tofu, Capri  blend vegetables, Create-your-own Panini with roast beef and assorted vegetables, ciabatta bread

Pasta bar:  meat ravioli,  cheese tortellini, tomato or herb sauce

Dinner
Beef Sirloin Tips with mushroom sauce, egg noodles, Asian shrimp with noodles, tofu stir fry, green beans, onion rings

Bagel bar with assorted cream cheese

Pancakes, blueberry-pear cobbler, bacon, hash browns, make-your-own waffles-toppings

Cheese pizza or creamed spinach and roasted garlic pizza, mixed squash, chicken tenders with BBQ or teriyaki sauce, potato puffs

Pasta bar: pasta, marinara sauce, pesto sauce and roasted vegetables
