What’s All the Fuss About the Student Newspaper?

Mairead Poulin ’13 is the current Editor-in-Chief of The Willistonian. She likes coffee, Italian Greyhounds, the occasional thunderstorm, and speaking her mind. Her column, From The Editor’s Desk, is published weekly.

When I was little, I was a pathological liar. I have distinct memories of creating the most outlandish, completely impossible stories, and sharing them with the adults in my family (who surely must have known that I was telling tall tales). I attribute this unattractive hobby to my love for telling stories. And once I graduated to scribbling, and later typing, out my stories (instead of passing them off as the truth), I formed a distinct definition of writing: the sharing of the details of a story in a way that made people want to read it. I figured that this made me a lover of “creative writing” – someone who specializes in fiction. But when I came to Williston as a freshman, I realized that my love for telling stories could translate into another form of writing: student journalism.

Hungry for Home

There’s something wonderful about home-cooked meals, a certain nostalgia that turns a simple dinner into something so much more. With the Thanksgiving and the Christmas breaks in rapid-fire succession, the season comes with an abundance of family dinners and specialty dishes. Especially latkes. Those are wonderful.

In this awkward middle period between the two breaks, it’s easy to long for something to remind us more of home, something to tell us that we really will be throwing snowballs into our brother’s room to wake him up in the worst way possible in a few short weeks. Don’t tell him I said that.

Food seems to be the best way to jog the memory. A character in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time regained abandoned memories simply by sniffing a pastry, so why not conjure up some holiday spirit by serving some home-style meals? Nick Pattison ’14 seems to recognize this, and hopes that the dining hall will decide to serve his favorite dish, Chicken and Biscuits with gravy. The recipe seems easy, delicious, and perfect for getting back in the family mindset. Let’s see what he has to say.

Clarification: Upcoming Banquet

To all Faculty and Upper School Students,
As was mentioned in Mr. Hill’s invitation, we are trying to get an accurate head count for the upcoming Community Dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 11th. We’d like to clarify the expectation for RSVP’s for this event. The expectation is that all Residential (on-campus) Faculty and Students will attend and need not RSVP. However, we would like to account for the faculty families, off-campus faculty, and day students that will be attending, thus we ask for you to email or call Leah Zell with a number of family members attending the dinner or a name for day students wishing to attend. While we understand the short time frame, we ask that this be done by the end of today (Tuesday, Dec. 4th) as quantities of food need to be ordered.  Thank you so much for your cooperation and we look forward to an outstanding evening.
