Girls Varsity Softball Opener

Hey frienders,

Dee and Mads here! The girls varsity softball team has the honor of playing their home opener on Sawyer Field. Sawyer Field you are wondering? YES! A turf field because ours is underwater and there are fishes swimming in the puddles currently in our outfield. But the Athletic Department has given us the privilege to play the first ever Williston Softball game on Sawyer. So we would love for our Wildcat fans to come on down Friday @ 4:45 and support the WGVS team! Hopefully the weather is great and you can enjoy the first ball game of the spring right down on SAWYER FIELD!! If you’re wondering or are confused by any means we said SAWYER FIELD. Thank you so much! See you at Sawyer Field on Friday @ 4:45!

XoXo,

Not gossip girl but Dee and Mads

Nile Project on April 6 and 7

2015 Wolfe nileprojectThe Nile Project Artist Residency came to the Dodge Room in Reed Campus Center on Monday, April 6, from 1:40 pm – 3:10 p.m. to share their music and work with students.

According to their website, the Nile Project unites artists from 11 countries along the Nile basin (Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and beyond) to create one unified sound. The music is produced by a variety of instruments, including the masenko from Ethiopia, the ney and oud from Egypt, and the adungu from Uganda, in addition to violin, saxophone, bass guitar, and vocalists singing in all 11 languages.

The on-campus field trip was required for students who are enrolled in Wind Ensemble and String Ensemble and was arranged by faculty members Kim Evelti and Ben Demerath.

On Tuesday, April 7, from 6:30-10:30 p.m., students enrolled in World Civilization, String & Wind Ensemble, and American Music Roots will head to the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for a performance by the Nile Project.

Mr. Demerath noted that the Nile River has been “the cause for concern and conflict due to political change and population increases in the countries along its banks. The Nile Project performance [has] a goal to use music to open up dialogues and address these concerns.”

Teller Chorus Begins Tuesday

Hello Williston Community!

Tuesday night will begin Teller Chorus rehearsals for this trimester! This is a fun, once-a-week, low stress ensemble where you can sing with your friends and make music! We meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in Reed 213. This trimester we are embarking upon a major work based on seven Robert Frost poems called “Frostiana.” It’s a really cool piece that we will play with orchestra in May. Because it’s a big piece, it also needs to be something you can regularly commit to. Feel free to come Tuesday and hear more about it.

I hope to see many of you there! It’s going to be a ton of fun.

Have a good weekend,

Mr. Harper

Autism Awareness on April 2

Roya Mostafavi ’18 shared the following words on Autism Awareness and the “light it up blue” campaign.

I wanted to bring your attention to a cause that is very close to my heart, autism. I personally have seen the effects of this disability through my brother, who is severely autistic. Autism is a communication disorder that spans a large spectrum.  The prevalence of autism has grown significantly over the past decade.

In the United States, 1 in 68 children have been identified with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Boys are five times more likely to develop autism than girls. This means that most of us either know someone with autism or will meet someone with autism in the future. I take responsibility as an individual to answer questions and support those who want to learn more about this cause. With greater awareness comes greater understanding.

April 2 is the United Nations decreed Autism Awareness Day, and the month of April is autism awareness month in the United States.  As blue is the color for autism awareness, I invite you to join me in wearing blue tomorrow in order to bring attention to this cause.

I will also be putting up blue lights in order to “light it up blue,” as part of another campaign by the organization Autism Speaks.
