More than Lucky: Commentary by Rachel Chambers

Editor’s note: Rachael Chambers coaches JV girls basketball team together with Jennifer Gross.

Two captains from either team approach the refs for the coin toss.  The opposing team looks down to shake the hands of the Williston players.  You’d think our JV girls basketball team would be intimidated by players twice their size.  That just means they have a challenge—and they love a challenge.  From the toss to the sound of the buzzer, the Williston girls JV basketball team work hard to keep the ball in their possession.  Every rebound is fought for.  These girls work just as hard as any varsity team, if not harder.  They love the sport and have so much respect for each other.

Our team is not of big stature, but of big heart.  At practice they laugh and learn.  The girls take that jovial attitude to game day and have fun out of the boards.  Not every game is a victory in points, but every game is a victory in attitude and self-respect.  Not every day do you hear a teammate say “I don’t care what the score is, I still feel like we’re winning!”

Girls Soccer Featured in Daily Hampshire Gazette

An article in the Daily Hampshire Gazette on Wednesday, January 30 recognized Williston’s girls soccer team for their support of the Autry family. The article, entitled “When a family from Oklahoma lost their mom, Williston Northampton students took action,” notes that students and faculty raised $1,407 through bracelet sales, a bake sale, a raffle and “Pink on the Pitch” in memory of Vicki Autry. The money was donated to the VNA & Hospice of Cooley Dickinson in Autry’s memory.

Eddie Autry, Vicki Autry’s husband, told the newspaper that “the effort seemed typical for a school community that enveloped his children in their struggles. ‘I was excited, but it didn’t surprise me, because that is just the way they are at Williston, so generous,’ he said.”

The article also notes that Priscilla Ross, director of development at the VNA & Hospice of Cooley Dickinson, “described how great it was to receive the phone call about the donation. She said she admires the team members for working so hard to support an organization that gives end-of-life services because it is such a difficult topic for people to approach.”
