Marguerite “Peggy” Newton Smith ’32

M NewtonMarguerite “Peggy” Newton Smith, 99 of Torch Lake, Antrim County, passed away on Mar. 16, 2015 at St. Anne’s Mead Senior Care Community in Southfield.

Marguerite was born July 25, 1915 in Pittsfield, MA, the daughter of Edward G. and Eugenia (Peterson) Newton.

She graduated from Northampton School for Girls in 1932 and Brenau College in Gainesville, GA with a bachelor’s degree in English. Marguerite worked as a secretary for G.E. and Reader’s Digest. She also was a Red Cross Staff Assistant stationed in Tunis, North Africa, during WWII.

On May 1, 1945 in Pittsfield, MA, she married Dr. George E. Smith. After many years of living in Bloomfield Township, they moved to Torch Lake in 1979. Marguerite became an active member of the Central Lake Lioness Club and enjoyed the many friends she met.

Surviving Marguerite are her children Jon Smith of Royal Oak, Steven (Jeanne) Smith of Royal Oak, Sharon (Dennis) Blom of Edwardsville, IL, Nancy Baker of Salt Lake City, UT, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband George in 2009, her daughter Carol Smith in 1989, and brothers John and Edward G. Newton.

Margaret Elizabeth Crooks Burke ’56

crooksMargaret Elizabeth Crooks Burke, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2015.

Born December 24, 1938. Long time resident of Marblehead. Born to William D.K. Crooks and Helen Martin Crooks both of Marblehead.

Peg, as she was known, attended the Northampton School For Girls in Northampton, Massachusetts and the Brimmer & May School in Newton. She attended college at Marymount in Tarrytown, NY. She was married to Paul Burke of Littles Point Swampscott, for fifty five years who predeceased her in July 2014.

In addition to raising two children, Peg was also very active in charitable fundraising and political pursuits; some to include Boys and Girls Club, Catholic Charities and various political fund raisers throughout the 60’s and 70’s. She was also a member of the Junior Aide Society, the Ace of Clubs, Salem Country Club and Corinthian Yacht Club. Peg enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, cooking, reading, entertaining, her pets, others pets and her grandchildren.

Surviving her are her son and daughter, H. Victoria Burke of Salem and Paul A. Burke of Salem and Palm Beach, Florida; two grandsons, Burke A. Oppenheim and Tucker A. Oppenheim both of Salem, a son in law Jeffrey J. Oppleheim of Hamilton, two sisters in law Betty Burke of MA and Penny Crooks of Florida, numerous nieces and nephews on the Burke and Crooks side the Honorable Joseph L. Tauro Family, Judge Joseph L. Tauro and Anne LeFavour Jones Tauro, Beth Tauro and Christopher M. Tauro all of Marblehead and Joseph L. Tauro, Jr of Florida.

Nancy Morse Willeson ’45

Nancy MorseNancy Lee (Morse) Willeson, A.K.A. Nancy Maxwell-Willeson, aged 87 went to be with her Lord April 18.

Nancy was living in Palm Harbor, FL. She was born January 20, 1928 in Wellesley Hills, MA, to Roger Earle & Gladys Carr Morse. She spent summers as a child at the family farm in Francestown, N.H., and also at the family cottage in Chatham, Cape Cod, MA. She graduated from Northampton School For Girls, in Northampton, MA, and she also graduated from Principia College in Elsah, IL.

She married Ronald (Max) Maxwell-Willeson Sept. 6, 1952, and brought up her four children in Wayland, MA and later in Chatham, MA.

Janet Slocombe Murray ’46

Janet SJanet L. (Slocombe) Murray, formerly of Woodlawn Avenue, Northampton, passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014.

Born Aug. 5, 1928, in Northampton, she was the youngest daughter of the late Christopher and Lillian Slocombe (Vanasse). She attended local schools and was a graduate of Smith College.

She lived in Hawaii and Barstow, California, but spent most of her life in Northampton. She loved animals and bred Siamese cats for a time. Janet also loved to travel, visiting many National Parks, Europe, and cruising throughout the Caribbean.

Mary Elizabeth Doble Canterbury ’43

Mary Elizabeth Doble Canterbury '43Mary Elizabeth Doble Canterbury of Palm City FL, formerly of Hingham, MA, died May 22, 2015 at the age of 91.

Betty was born in Quincy, MA, and was raised in Hingham, MA, she graduated from Northampton School for Girls in 1943.

She married William B. Canterbury on December 24, 1946. Betty and Bill raised their family in Hingham and moved to Stuart, Florida in 1975. Betty was predeceased by her husband and her parents William H. Doble, Jr. and Elizabeth Gilman Doble, and a sister Sally Doble McKenny.

She is survived by her children Gay (Fritz) Blaicher ’61 of Vero Beach, FL; Nancy (Tony) Miller ’66 of Wilmington, NC and Samuel Canterbury ’76 of Sarasota, FL. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ann Doble Abbey ’44 of Georgetown, CO.

Dr. Marilyn Mailman Segal ’44

Marilyn Mailman Segal '44DR. MARILYN (MICKEY) MAILMAN SEGAL, professor of human development and renowned specialist in infant and toddler development passed away on November 19, 2014.

To her children Betty Bardige (Art), Wendy Masi (Nick), Richard Segal (Monica), Patti Lieberman (Bruce), and Debbie Segal, she was a continual source of inspiration, the guiding light of the A.L. Mailman Family Foundation. To her 13 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild, she was a loving and playful presence.

She founded the first Head Start in Broward County and the first inclusion preschool. As one of the first PhD recipients at Nova Southeastern University, she went on to establish several NSU programs including an online doctorate in Early Childhood Education, the University School (Pre-K-12) and the Family Center, today referred to as the Mailman Segal Center for Human Development. She was a Trustee of University of Miami and served on the Board of Zero to Three.

Author of 17 books and countless articles, Mickey was a tireless and visionary advocate for children. She was beloved by many as a teacher, mentor, colleague and friend.

Jean Harmon Baker ’33

Jean Harmon Baker, age 100, passed away in Catonsville, MD on April 15, 2015.

Born in Yonkers, NY, she attended The Northampton School for Girls and worked for Exxon where she met her late husband, Harold Jay Baker.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son James, daughter Mary Ellen, 4 brothers, 2 sisters and her parents.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Amy Baker Lohr (James) and grandchildren Kristin Jean Lohr and Susannah Baker Lohr.

Deborah Saybolt Merker ’55

SayboltDeborah Saybolt Merker, “Debby” of Haverford, PA, age 78, died unexpectedly in an automobile accident in Cleveland, Tennessee on April 10th.

Beloved wife of 53 years of James J. Merker and loving Mother of Lisa and (John) Allen and Jenny and (Bart) Anthony. She is survived by grandchildren, Tyler Conway and Caroline Hayes Allen and is the sister of Peter M. Saybolt and Janet S. Bowers. Debby was the daughter of W.D. and Marion Saybolt of Haverford, PA.

Debby attended Baldwin School and graduated from Williston Northampton School; attended Brown University and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.

Debby was a stewardess for Eastern Airlines in the 60s. She later joined her husband’s firm, Merker Associates, as a partner.

She was an active member of St. Christopher’s Church of Gladwyne and a long time dedicated member of the choir. One of Debby’s great passions was her love for animals, especially her dogs. She also loved art, design and music. She was an avid gardener. Her generosity and kindness were legendary.
