Anita Botwinik Abrams ’42

BotwinikAnita (Botwinik) Abrams, 91, of Woodbridge, CT & formerly of Boynton Beach, FL., died on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015.

Born in New Haven, CT., May 6, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Henrietta (Silverstein) Botwinik.

Anita was a 1942 graduate of Northhampton School for Girls and attended Goucher College.

A Past-President of the West End Chapter of ORT in New Haven and Chairwoman of the Young Married Division of the UJA, Anita was one of the Founders of the Gan Hayeled Nursery School of Cong. B’nai Jacob, then located on George St. in New Haven, CT. She collaborated with Jean Bell on a Ladies golf line which was built-up to become a national named brand and sold in most golf shops. Anita was an original member of the Woodbridge Country Club, was it’s women’s golf champion on three different occasions, and was a Chairwoman of the Women’s Golf Association.

Anita resided at Hunter’s Run in Boynton Beach, FL for almost 30 years and served on many committees and was a member of it’s Board of Governors. She was an avid card player, a voracious reader, and loved to travel, which she did extensively.

Anita was the Beloved Wife of the late Harry S. Abrams. Loving Mother of Rick (Nancy) Abrams of Tucson, AZ and Patricia (Peter Dermer) Bray of West Haven. Cherished Grandmother of Julie (Nelson) Suriel, Tracy Bray, Lauren (Fabio) Abrams, Jessica (Kevin) Prue, and Kelly Abrams. Adoring Great-Grandmother of Joaquin, Navarro, & Haylie.

Ann Maier Heldenbrand ’42

HeldenbrandAnne Maier Heldenbrand gently passed away on Wednesday, Sept.30, 2015 in Ocala, Fla. She was in her apartment at The Windsor of Ocala, surrounded by her family.

Anne was born April 26, 1924 in Pottstown, Penn. to John B. and Bessie C. Maier.

She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Ladd L. Heldenbrand of South Portland, her brothers, Dr. John Maier and Dr. Paul Maier, and her sister, Jane Dreyer. She is survived by her daughter, Nan Heldenbrand Morrissette of Dunnellon, Fla. and her son-in-law, Thomas Morrissette, her son, Keith Heldenbrand of South Freeport and her daughter-in-law, Christina Heldenbrand. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Jennifer Kastelic of Portland, and Alexis Heldenbrand of South Freeport; and by her great-grandchildren, Althea, Jonah and Sophia Kastelic.

Anne attended Northampton School For Girls before graduating from Royersford (Penn.) High School, and Pierce Business School in Philadelphia Penn.

Richard E Waite, Sr. ’42

Richard WaiteRichard E. “Dick” Waite, Sr., 91, of West Brandywine, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015.

He was the husband of the late Ruth A. Waite, his beloved wife with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.

Born on May 13, 1924, in Winchington, Massachusetts, Richard graduated from Williston Academy in 1942 and received a BA degree in economics from Bowdoin College. His college studies were interrupted by service in Europe during WW II as a combat infantryman with the 84th Division. He fought in some of the most significant battles, the Battle of the Bulge and The Siegfried Line and participated in concentration camp liberations.

John M. Newton, Jr. ’42

NewtonJohn M. Newton Jr., 91, of Wolfeboro, NH, father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather and card-carrying member of the Greatest Generation, died peacefully at home on April 12, less than a month before turning 92.

He leaves his wife Ernestine, sons John Newton ‘67 and wife Patricia Fiorelli of Newburyport, Mass, Mark L. Newton ‘70 and wife Susan of Snellville, GA and David Newton ‘74 and wife Lynn Wolff of Boston.  A third son, Peter ‘71, predeceased him. He also leaves six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was born in Springfield, Mass, son of John M. Newton Sr. and Dorris B. Newton.

Charles Alling ’42

AllingCharles T. Alling, 91, who resided at Beatrice Hover Assisted Living in Longmont, died November 22, 2014 at Balfour Skilled Nursing in Louisville. Charles was born on August 29, 1923 in New Haven, CT to Truman and Mildred (Kohler) Alling.

Charles graduated from Williston Academy in Easthampton, MA in 1942 and later attended Paul Smith’s College in Paul Smiths, NY from 1949-1950. Charles served with the United States Navy.

Charles married Louise Holmsten in 1950 in Paul Smiths, NY. Charles moved to Boulder in October of 1991 from Paul Smiths, NY.

Charles was a draftsman and project manager in non-residential construction, retiring in 1986.

Charles was a volunteer for Boulder County Parks and Open Spaces and was a volunteer ambassador at Denver International Airport.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, wife Louise and son David Alling.

Charles is survived by his son Steven Alling of Ridgewood, NJ, daughters Susan Alling of Longmont, CO, Karen Waters of Boulder, CO and Maria LeMaire of West Hampton Beach, NY and daughter-in-law Cindy Alling of Longmont, CO along with his grandchildren.

Nancy Corinne Peck Stainbrook ’42

Peck '42Nancy Corinne Peck Stainbrook of The Carriage Club at Charlotte, NC, formerly of New York City, NY, passed away on December 28th, 2010 after a brief bout of pneumonia.

She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Richard D. Stainbrook and her sister, Dorcas Allen and parents Mildred E. and Donald T. Peck.

Born November 25, 1924 in New Haven, CT, she graduated from Northampton School for Girls, Smith College and pursued a Graduate degree in Switzerland.

Charlotte Hall Hill ’42

Hall HillCharlotte (Hall) Hill, 89, passed away May 20, 2014 of Silver Lake, NH, formerly of Winchester, MA.

Charlotte was predeceased by her husband Percy H. Hill. Daughter of the late Kenneth and Pauline (Peirce) Hall of Winchester. Charlotte was the youngest of 4 and was predeceased by sisters Nancy Gifford, Katharine Fulton and Margaret Sydney. Dear mother of Mary Ann and her late husband Jonathan Head of Wellesley and of Lisa Teahan and her husband Kevin of Winchester. Sister-in-law of Jack M. Hill of Williamsburg, VA.

Survived by grandchildren Timothy Head and wife Stacey of Boston, Daniel Head and wife Katherine of Wayland, Stephen Head of Brooklyn, NY; Jeremy Holmes, Heather Teahan and Andrew Teahan, all of Winchester; Sara (Teahan) and husband Dan OConnell of Middleborough, MA. Also survived by the Head great grandchildren Meghan, Sadie, Gretchen and Natalie and the OConnell great grandchildren Ella and Mackenzie. Charlotte also has eleven nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond. The quality and length of Charlottes life was extended these last years by her friends and neighbors and most importantly her devoted caregiver Maureen Baptiste.

Natalie Vogel Lawton ’42

Vogel LawtonNatalie V. (Vogel) Lawton, 90, of State Street, Westerly, passed away on Wednesday morning, April 2, 2014, at the Apple Rehab Watch Hill.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Arthur Newman Lawton, on January 25, 1995, whom she met while vacationing at Watch Hill. After they married in 1954, she moved to Westerly. She is survived by her son, Allen D. Lawton of Westerly, her sister-in-law, Mary Lawton of Westerly and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lawton was born in New Bedford, MA, on June 30, 1923, the daughter of the late Ellery and Sarah (Lewis) Vogel. She spent her early years in Northampton and Longmeadow, MA. She was a graduate of the Northampton School for Girls (now known as Williston- Northampton Academy), Lasell Junior College (now known as Lasell College) in Newton, MA, and Tobe’ Coburn School in New York City. She majored in merchandising in college.

Carol Somerville Cory ’42

Carol Somerville Cory ’42 passed away peacefully on July 1, 2013. She was 89 years old. Carol was born on December 25, 1923, in Evanston, Illinois, to John and Corinne Patton Somerville. The day she was born, the nurses at the hospital went to her mother’s room with lit candles. Seeing the candles, her mother thought, “I must be in Heaven.” The nurses were there to sing Christmas carols. Carol was named because of that special event.
