National Merit Scholar Recognition

Each year about 1.5 million students in more than 22,000 high schools enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT. About 3 percent of those taking the test qualify to receive program recognition. As a result of their scores, this year Williston has nine students who qualified for this recognition. During All-School Assembly on Friday morning, Associate Head of School Jeff Ketchum reminded juniors and sophomores, who will be taking the test this next Wednesday, that the PSAT was more than just practice for the SAT, it was also a chance for national recognition and possible scholarship money. The following seniors received certificates at assembly:

Mika Chmielewski
Devon Greenwood
Emma Hing
Kat Kaisla
Jiwon Lee
Mimi Phillips
Mairead Poulin
Keely Quirk
Eric Tallman

Welcome, Trustees!

Dear Williston Community,

As many of you know, today marks the beginning of our Fall Trustee Weekend, and so we will be welcoming members of the Board to our meals, classrooms, and sidelines.  Please feel free to introduce yourself to any Trustee whom you see—they are all eager to talk about Williston.

For students: Trustees are alumni, past parents, present parents, and others who agree to serve on Williston’s Board and who literally, “hold the trust.”  In other words, the Board of Trustees works with administration of the school to ensure that we are Mission directed and future-oriented.   Board members are incredibly generous with their time (they are volunteers) and their presence on campus signifies only a part of the many hours they devote over the course of the year to committee work and discussions—all in the service of making Williston the best school we can be.

I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful fall day, and, once again, please extend a warm Willy welcome to our guests.

With Purpose, Passion, and Integrity,

R.Hill

Juniors: PSAT Pre-registration Tomorrow

Tomorrow is PSAT pre-registration for juniors! During activities period from 3:00-3:45 p.m. on October 11, all juniors should report to the dining commons to pre-register for the test.

Sophomores will pre-register on Friday, October 12 at the same time.

Students should arrive with their Sammy cards, checks made out for $16 to The Williston Northampton School, or $16 in cash. Because students will need to fill out forms, they also should bring a number two pencil.

Community Tailgate Cancelled

To ensure the safety of our friends, families, and fans, we have decided to cancel next weekend’s Community Tailgate. We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause. The boys varsity and junior varsity football teams will play on Saturday, October 13, at times that have not yet been determined. Please check the school’s website early next week for game times.

Easthampton has recently been labeled a high risk area for mosquito-borne illnesses such as Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). EEE is a rare viral infection that is dangerous to humans; it is spread through infected mosquito bites. The Department of Public Health has confirmed three cases of human EEE infection across Massachusetts this year. Officials also have reported 13 cases of another mosquito-transmitted disease, West Nile Virus, in Massachusetts.

Fine & Performing Arts Classrooms Request

Hello All,

This is a gentle reminder to the community that the Fine & Performing Arts classrooms and spaces are for those students and faculty involved in those programs.  With the visual arts in the Upper School, students pay a substantial studio fee per course for the supplies used in their classes.  In the Middle School, we have a budget for supplies to be used specifically for those classes.

Dining Hall Requests

As I am sure most of you have noticed, the dining hall has been busier than usual this year during lunch. Two factors contributing to this are the fact that you like the food we serve (thank you!) and the new academic schedule.  We are working at ways of easing the congestion so please bear with us.  In the meantime, you can help us by busing your tables and pushing your chairs in when you are finished eating. Please leave the tables the way you would want to find them if you were just coming in to eat.

Since the start of the school year we are missing about fifty (50) cereal bowls, fifty (50) teaspoons, forty (40) cups, and a multitude of coffee cups and assorted other flatware.  Please do not take dishes, cups or flatware from the dining hall.  Just because our dishes have a plastic feel to them does not mean that they are inexpensive or disposable.  If you happen to see any items mentioned above in your travels around campus please return them to the dining hall or send me an email so that I can retrieve them.

Thank you all in advance for your assistance in these matters.

Mr. Martin

March Break Trip: Ireland

This is Ryan Tyree, the new English teacher, squash, and tennis coach here at Williston. I am so thrilled to be joining the team this year, and wanted to take a moment to let you know a bit about one of my biggest passions: travel. For the last 10 years I have had the privilege of leading student trips to Washington DC, Gettysburg, eight countries in Europe and dozens of cities along the way.

This year Mrs. Tyree and I are excited to announce a 10-day excursion to the iconic isle of Ireland! As we have done over the past six trips, we are working in conjunction with our wonderful travel group to create the ultimate balance of education and fun.

Math Center Hours

Good Evening everyone.
The e-mail you have been waiting for has finally arrived… the math resource center will begin operation tomorrow morning!  Here are the particulars:

The schedule is attached and is shown below and it does not change from week to week.  Please take note of the fact that two nights a week, Tuesday and Wednesday, you can get math extra help during study hall, from 8 pm to 9 pm, in WB, otherwise known as the Middle School.  If you want to take advantage of evening study hall tutoring, make sure you sign out of the dorm and into your tutoring session!

The Math Resource Center is located on the first floor of the Schoolhouse at the end of the hall right next door to Mrs. Choo’s office.

Every period during which tutoring is offered, one of the teachers from the math department will be available in the math office to assist the tutor if needed (so far this support has never been needed!)

You do not need to make an appointment, and you do not need to stay for the entire period or the entire hour in the evening.  The math resource center tutoring is a drop-in service.

On the other hand, you are welcome to come every week at the same time to work with the same tutor(s) if that works well for you.

You must bring your math materials, including your book, to the resource center and/or the Middle School.  At the moment all of the student edition copies of our math books are on reserve in the library – we don’t have any extra!

We encourage you to use this resource wisely.  The tutors can help you with many different areas of your learning such as with homework questions, with concepts you just don’t quite ‘get’, and with preparing for quizzes and tests.  We hope you will soon find the great value in working with students who want to help you succeed.

If you have any questions about the Resource Center, please speak with your math teacher.

Sincerely,
Ms. Anderson, the Math Department, and the Math Tutors extraordinaire!
