Jean Lyndon Lathrop ’62

LatrhopJean Lyndon Lathrop, 71, of Plainfield, died unexpectedly on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at her beloved home, which was a part of the New Hamburger Community.

She was born on September 4, 1943, in Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Roger Lyndon, the noted mathematician, and Barbara Whitmer. She was raised in Unity, New Hampshire, by her mother, the late Barbara (Whitmer) Clark and the late Alan “Buddy” Clark.

She received her B.A. and an M.A. in American women’s history from Goddard College. She then taught for many years in a Goddard College undergraduate program for low-income adults.

Anita Botwinik Abrams ’42

BotwinikAnita (Botwinik) Abrams, 91, of Woodbridge, CT & formerly of Boynton Beach, FL., died on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015.

Born in New Haven, CT., May 6, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Henrietta (Silverstein) Botwinik.

Anita was a 1942 graduate of Northhampton School for Girls and attended Goucher College.

A Past-President of the West End Chapter of ORT in New Haven and Chairwoman of the Young Married Division of the UJA, Anita was one of the Founders of the Gan Hayeled Nursery School of Cong. B’nai Jacob, then located on George St. in New Haven, CT. She collaborated with Jean Bell on a Ladies golf line which was built-up to become a national named brand and sold in most golf shops. Anita was an original member of the Woodbridge Country Club, was it’s women’s golf champion on three different occasions, and was a Chairwoman of the Women’s Golf Association.

Anita resided at Hunter’s Run in Boynton Beach, FL for almost 30 years and served on many committees and was a member of it’s Board of Governors. She was an avid card player, a voracious reader, and loved to travel, which she did extensively.

Anita was the Beloved Wife of the late Harry S. Abrams. Loving Mother of Rick (Nancy) Abrams of Tucson, AZ and Patricia (Peter Dermer) Bray of West Haven. Cherished Grandmother of Julie (Nelson) Suriel, Tracy Bray, Lauren (Fabio) Abrams, Jessica (Kevin) Prue, and Kelly Abrams. Adoring Great-Grandmother of Joaquin, Navarro, & Haylie.

Ann Maier Heldenbrand ’42

HeldenbrandAnne Maier Heldenbrand gently passed away on Wednesday, Sept.30, 2015 in Ocala, Fla. She was in her apartment at The Windsor of Ocala, surrounded by her family.

Anne was born April 26, 1924 in Pottstown, Penn. to John B. and Bessie C. Maier.

She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Ladd L. Heldenbrand of South Portland, her brothers, Dr. John Maier and Dr. Paul Maier, and her sister, Jane Dreyer. She is survived by her daughter, Nan Heldenbrand Morrissette of Dunnellon, Fla. and her son-in-law, Thomas Morrissette, her son, Keith Heldenbrand of South Freeport and her daughter-in-law, Christina Heldenbrand. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Jennifer Kastelic of Portland, and Alexis Heldenbrand of South Freeport; and by her great-grandchildren, Althea, Jonah and Sophia Kastelic.

Anne attended Northampton School For Girls before graduating from Royersford (Penn.) High School, and Pierce Business School in Philadelphia Penn.

Phyllis “Bunny” Gavin Robinson ’37

Phyllis Gasvin RobinsonPhyllis “Bunny” Gavin Robinson, a social worker, died on February 29, 2016 in Sarasota, Florida. She was 95. The cause of death was dementia.

When she was born, her grandfather, Milo Whitaker, remarked that she looked like a cute little bunny. Thus, she got her nickname, which she used all her life. Bunny attended the Northampton School For Girls, Class of 1937. Her aunt was Sarah B. Whitaker, one of the founders of Northampton School For Girls. Following graduation she went to Smith College where she graduated cum laude with a degree in economics in 1941. During World War II, Bunny volunteered for the Red Cross and served on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.

Following the war, she married John Parker Robinson, whom she had known since childhood. As a US Embassy spouse she lived in Paris and Madrid during the reconstruction of Europe under the Marshall Plan. She also lived in Santiago, Chile, before returning to Washington, D.C. where they were divorced in 1965. She then redefined herself by getting a master’s degree in social work at the University of Maryland and subsequently worked in social services around Washington, D.C. and later in Montpelier, Vermont. In 1989, she moved to Siesta Key in Sarasota, Florida. She enjoyed painting and traveling. She has always been known for her keen sense of humor and directness.

She is survived by three sons, Philip Gavin Robinson ‘66, John Preble Robinson ’68, and his wife Aya, and James Milo Robinson ’74 and his wife JoAnn, and one sister Caroline Preble Arnold ’47. Bunny also had four grandchildren, Margaret, Bridget, John and Patrick, as well three great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Bunny’s memory to Sarah B. Whitaker Memorial Scholarship Fund at Williston Northampton School at 19 Payson Avenue, Easthampton, Massachusetts 01027. She will be interred in Norton, Massachusetts at a later date.

Sarah Showalter Hubbard ’40

HubbardSarah Showalter Hubbard, 93, of Stuart, FL, formerly of Northampton, MA, passed away February 12, 2016. Sarah was born in Newton, MA and grew up in Northampton where she was graduated from the former Northampton School for Girls in 1940. She attended Syracuse University and was graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School in Boston.

In 1946 she married Edwin B. Hubbard, formerly of New Hampshire, who pre-deceased her after 53 years of marriage. Her children are Edwin B. and wife Lynn of Naples, FL, Elizabeth D. Hubbard of Hobe Sound, FL and Ann H. Buscemi and husband Peter of Longmeadow, MA. There are five grandchildren, including Natalie Buscemi ’08, and four great grandchildren.

A loving mother and daughter first, Sarah- fondly known as Sally- volunteered generously in the Northampton community. Later on she assumed the position of Coordinator for an International Conference on Deaf Education, followed by 15 years with the Alumnae Association of Smith College, her last position there as Associate Director.

Sarah joined her husband in retirement in Eastham, MA before moving to Stuart where she continued in giving back to this community through the Council on Aging and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

Geraldine Kelley Hollman ’46

KelleyGeraldine (Kelley) Hollman, 84, of Cambridge, formerly of Belmont, passed away on Nov. 10, 2012.

Born August 29, 1928. Daughter of the late Marjorie Harland Browne and Gerard W. Kelley. Beloved mother of the late Marjorie Hollman Hazzard. Geraldine attended Northampton School For Girls, Fryeburg College in Maine, and Katherine Gibbs School in Boston.

She worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington, DC and was released in 1949. She also worked for the Arthur D. Little Company in Cambridge and finally she retired from the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston where she worked as a customer service representative for 27 years.

She entered the Secular Order of Franciscans at St. Anthony’s Shrine, Arch St. in Boston, became an assistant to the Spiritual Director, and was one of the Provincial Visitors of all the New England fraternities. She was also a Director of Formation and authored several texts for a course of study.

Her last residence of 10 years was at the Sancta Maria Nursing Facility, Concord Ave. Cambridge, under their loving and devoted care.

Carolyn Johnson Gleason ’46

johnson gleasonCarolyn Johnson Gleason, 84, of Auburn, died Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

Mrs. Gleason was born in Auburn, the daughter of the late Dr. Raymond and Florence Messer Johnson, and had resided in the Auburn-Fleming area for all her life.

She was a member of the former Sand Beach Church, where she taught Sunday school and served as treasurer. Mrs. Gleason was employed at Auburn Memorial Hospital as an LPN. In addition, she worked for the Cayuga Red Cross, which included coordinating the swimming program at Owasco Lake for many years. She was a caregiver for several elderly friends over the years. She particularly enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s many activities.

Surviving are three sons, Michael Worden of Skaneateles, Kenneth Worden (Sharon) of Owasco, Steven Gleason (Sarah) of Fleming; two daughters, Linda Worden (David Palochko) of Rye, NH, Denise Franklin (James) of Fleming; eight grandchildren, Brian, David and Jeffrey Worden, Jessica, Jason and Jennifer Franklin, Elizabeth and Charles Gleason; one great-granddaughter, Kayla Worden.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Charles A. Gleason, of 31 years in 1990 and sister, Elizabeth Phillips of Inver-Grove, MN, in 2006.

Eileen Sullivan Vail ’41

Eileen Sullivan VailEileen S. Vail, 92, of Nashua, and formerly of Northampton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, in Nashua.

Eileen was born March 30, 1923, in Northampton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Neil and Viola (Sheridan) Sullivan. Eileen attended local schools, graduating from Northampton High School class of 1940. She furthered her education, and graduated from Smith College in 1945.

Eileen entered the insurance field and was a sales and insurance representative for several companies throughout the years. She met and married Thomas Vail and they began their family. They moved to Monson, Massachusetts, where Eileen taught elementary school before the family moved to New Hampshire where they settled.

Eileen was a devout Catholic and attended church in her youth at St. Mary’s in Northampton, Massachusetts, and later in New Hampshire. Family was very important to Eileen and she cherished her time spent with them at gatherings, holidays and vacations.

Eileen was predeceased by her parents, Neil and Viola Sullivan and her husband Thomas Vail who passed away in 2008. She leaves her children Laurie Casey and her husband William of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Thomas Vail, Jr., and his wife Jennifer of Westminster, Colorado, and Shauneen Lund and her husband James of San Leandro, California, and her grandchildren Matthew, Bryan and Lillie Vail and Kim Lund. She also leaves her dear sister Barbara Laughlin of Northampton, Massachusetts, and several nieces and nephews

Virginia Stiles Shepardson ’63

StilesVirginia Ruth (Stiles) Shepardson, 70, of Parsons Street, passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at her home.

She was born in Northampton, and is the daughter of Gladys (Aquadro) Stiles of Easthampton and the late Howard D. Stiles.

Virginia graduated from the former Northampton School for Girls and received a bachelors degree from American International College in Springfield. She earned her master’s in education from Westfield State College plus 60 additional graduate credits.

Virginia was a longtime educator in the Westfield Public Schools, retiring in 2009 after 18 years at Juniper Park School. She was a devoted teacher who was known for her great sense of humor and an ability to connect with students. She was passionate about teaching and inspired a love of learning beyond the classroom, to her six grandchildren, who she adored.

Besides her mother, she leaves two daughters, Jennifer Brenes and her husband Brent of Easthampton, and Kathryn Carpenter and her husband John of Florence. She also leaves a sister Elizabeth and brother-in-law Wolfgang Neumann of Switzerland; her grandchildren Megan and Ryan Morissette, Amberlie and Kyle Brenes, and Jack and Grace Carpenter; nieces Juliana, Alexandra, Nathalie Neumann and Sarah Stiles; and nephew Ben Stiles.

Besides her father, she is predeceased by her brother Mark Stiles.
