James Ewing ’55

EwingJames Hildreth Ewing, 75, of Lexington, formerly of Brockton, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at the Lahey Clinic after suffering a stroke.

James was born May 11, 1938, to Clifton and Lora Ewing, and grew up in Westhampton.

He was a retired electrical engineer and avid boat enthusiast. James was a graduate of Williston Academy class of 1955 and of Amherst College class of 1959.

He is survived by dear friend and partner Mathilde Wood; his children and their spouses Eleanor Gittelman and husband Arye of Seattle, Wash., Lora Ewing of New York City, N.Y., Ruth Ewing and wife Jennifer Collins of Maynard, David Ewing and wife Teresa of Longmont, Colo, and Jeannette Levitt of Chicago, Ill.; his siblings Margaret Stern, Peter Ewing and Heidi Kapsokavathis; grandchildren Rachel, Juli, Aaron, Scott, Tim, Emily, Amanda, Lily, Nick and Sophie; and several nieces and nephews.

James was predeceased by grandson Andrew Levitt.

Henry Drozdal ’40

DrozdalHenry (Hank) E. Drozdal, 93, of Jensen Beach, Fla. and formerly of Hadley, Mass., passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2013.

Mr. Drozdal was born in Hadley, Mass. where he lived for most of his life before retiring to Jensen Beach in 1983. Henry was a graduate of Hopkins Academy in Hadley, Mass. and of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was the son of the late Michael and Klementine (Federkiewicz) Drozdal.

Lorraine Lucadello, former employee

LucadelloLorraine (Praxel) Lucadello, 90, of Southampton, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds.

She was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Strelow) Praxel. She was the widow of Robert G. Lucadello.  Lorraine and her late husband Robert, who was a U.S. Air Force Officer serving in World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam, traveled extensively and settled in Southampton in 1969.

Lorraine was employed as secretary to the head master of Williston Northampton School in Easthampton.  She retired in the 1990’s. She is survived by one son, Robert G. Lucadello, II, of San Francisco, Calif.; one daughter, Victoria Lucadello of Easthampton; and one brother, Edward Praxel and one sister, Priscilla Praxel, both of Washington.

Father Oliver Hebert, former faculty

HerbertFather Oliver, TOR of the Third Order Regular Franciscans of the Province of the Most Sacred of Jesus, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville, Pa.

Born Dec. 9, 1940, in Worcester, Mass., and given the name John. He was the son of the late Oliver A. Hebert and Maude M. Champagne Hebert. He was a graduate of Park Street Elementary School, Palmer, Mass., and Palmer High School, Palmer, Mass. After high school graduation, Father Oliver attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he received a bachelor of arts in mathematics in June 1961, and received a master of arts in mathematics in June 1963. From September 1963 until June 1965, Father Oliver was an instructor of mathematics at Williston Academy, Easthampton, Mass.

Father Oliver entered the Third Order Regular on Sept. 12, 1965, at Mount Assisi Monastery, Loretto. He professed his temporary vows on July 1, 1967, at Sacred Heart Monastery, Winchester, Va., and his solemn vows on July 1, 1970, at Immaculate Conception Chapel, Loretto. Father Oliver was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop James J. Hogan, D.D. of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, at Immaculate Conception Chapel, St. Francis College, Loretto, on May 15, 1971. Father Oliver received his Master of Divinity degree from St. Francis Seminary, Loretto, in 1971. He received a master of arts degree in Eastern Christian Studies from John XXIII Institute for Eastern Christian Studies, Maryknoll Seminary, Ossining, N.Y., in 1976. He did doctoral studies in mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh.

During his long and very generous ministry, Father Oliver served as follows: 1971-1973, St. Francis College, Loretto, as instructor in math; 1973-1978, The College of Steubenville, Steubenville, Ohio, as instructor in theology; 1978-1984, Franciscan Renewal Center, Winchester, Va., as director; 1984-1988, St. Francis College, Loretto, as instructor in math; 1988-1990, the University of Pittsburgh, graduate studies; 1990-2001, St. Francis University, professor of mathematics; 2001-2002, St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, Northern Cambria, associate pastor; 2002-present, St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, Northern Cambria, pastor; 2002-present, SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Patton, pastor.

Father Oliver is survived by his brother, Edward, Nicholson, Pa., and his cousin, Donald R. Hall, Northern Cambria.

Internment will take place at Franciscan Friars’ Cemetery, on the campus of St. Francis University, Loretto.

Nancy Angell DuBois ’49

AngellNancy Angell DuBois was born in Randolph, Vt., July 13, 1930, and died Nov. 25, 2013.

She was the daughter of Wilmer “Dr. Bill” Angell and Margaret Dickie Angell, of Randolph. Nancy grew up in this community and attended its school. She graduated from Randolph High School and  Northampton School for Girls, Northampton, Mass. She graduated from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1953.

Norman Pike ’49

PikeDr. Norman Bronson Pike, 82, of 326 Main St., Ashfield, died peacefully Friday, November 29, at home surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Northampton, MA on February 4, 1931, the son of Norman and Merle (Bronson) Pike.

He attended grammar school and Williston Academy in Easthampton and after moving to Ashfield with his parents he attended and graduated from Sanderson Academy.He was a 1949 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Pike and the former Christine Micka were married in June of 1952 at the West Hatfield Lutheran Church.

Barbara Cheney Ross ’54

Barbara Cheney RossBarbara Ellen Cheney Ross, age 76, of Toms River, NJ, passed away on Thursday morning, August 29th, 2013.

She bravely endured a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and heart problems. Barbara was born in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was raised by her parents Stanley and Dorothy Cheney.

She attended Northampton School for Girls and then Smith College in Massachusetts and received her BA from Georgian Court College in Lakewood. She later received her law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law and practiced family law in Toms River for over 20 years. Barbara and a colleague founded a non-profit adoption service, New Jersey Friends of FANA.

Barbara is survived by her beloved husband Robert, a retired USAF Colonel and Pan Am World Airways pilot. They were married for 57 wonderful years and raised four biological children: Elizabeth, Victoria, Stanley John and Ian. They adopted and loved many other children including: Adriana, Jennifer, Katherine, John, Hope, David, and Alec. Barbara and Robert lived and raised their family for over forty years in Toms River. She will be forever loved and missed by her family.

Dr. David L. Kendall ’40

KendallDr. David Leslie Kendall, 93, passed away with his family at his bedside on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013. He was born in Montpelier, Vt., in 1920.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Cornelia Vaughan Kendall, and brother, Vaughan. David is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan James; their four children, Jeanie Young, Deborah Kendall-Gallagher, Vaughan and Elizabeth; six grandchildren, Frank, David, Hunter, Margot, Kathryn (Katie) and Colin; and two great-grandchildren, Hawke and Bodie.

David graduated from McGill University and received his medical degree from the University of Vermont in 1953 after serving in World War II. David and Joan moved to Farmington in 1958, where he opened his general surgery practice. Committed to his patients, David served the community for more than 40 years. David was inducted in the San Juan Regional Medical Center Hall of Fame in 2006.

David, known to be disciplined but independent of spirit, was a loving husband, parent and grandparent. David brought a vitality to life expressed through his loyalty to family, excitement of flying, dedication to golf and love of fly fishing on the quality waters of the San Juan River.

David will be buried in St. George’s Cemetery in Trenton, Ontario, Canada.
