Joseph Wayland-Smith ’57

Joseph Wayland-Smith passed away peacefully on July 25, 2018 after a long fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Seattle, Washington and lived in Oneida, New York for many years and later retired to Bonita Springs, Florida. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Betty and Jerry Wayland-Smith; sister, Nini Hatcher, brother and sister-in-law, Janny and Bill Rosenberger and brother-in-law, Robert Kopp.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Ellen, of 53 years, his adoring children, Anne Salerno (Allen Salerno) and Douglas Wayland-Smith (Amy Wayland-Smith), and his cherished grandchildren, Ian Salerno, and Abby and Natalie Wayland-Smith. Joe is also survived by his sister-in-law, Carol Kopp and brother-in-law, Lang Hatcher. In addition, he leaves behind many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Joe graduated from Williston Academy, Syracuse University and Albany Medical School Physicians’ Assistant Program. Joe proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960. He worked for Oneida Limited for many years but his true love was working as a PA in the Emergency Room. Joe had many interests in life. He was a football referee, soccer coach, EMT and a woodworker. He served on the board of the area arts council for many years and various other volunteer organizations.

Joe and Ellen enjoyed their vacations on Nantucket for 25 years surfcasting for blue fish. They also made wonderful memories at their daughter’s cabin in the Adirondacks. Pontoon boat rides and hearing the loons were particularly special to him. Joe and Ellen spent 17 wonderful years in retirement at Worthington Country Club in Florida where they made lasting friendships with folks from various parts of the U.S. and abroad. Joe was interested in the stock market, reading, golf, duplicate bridge and loved being surrounded by his family and friends engaged in conversation and laughter. He will be remembered for his kindness, courage, patience and dedication to helping others.

David Gregory ’57

David Gregory, age 77 of Toney, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Martha, daughter; Donna (Brian) Fuller, son; Matt (Jan) Gregory, two grandchildren; Alex Fuller and Madison Fuller. Mr. Gregory was preceded in death by his grandson Wesley Fuller. Mr. Gregory retired from IBM after 29 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and an avid Alabama fan.

William J. Romanos, Jr. ’57

romanosDr. William Joseph Romanos, Jr.,”Bill”, passed away peacefully on December 30th. Bill was born on May 6, 1940 in Barre, Vermont to the late Dr. William and Rosalie (Maloof) Romanos. He was raised in Springfield, Massachusetts and graduated from Williston Academy in Easthampton, MA. Bill earned his undergraduate degree from Colgate University, and his Medical Degree from Tufts University. After medical school, he completed his residency at the Institute of Living in Hartford, CT, and a fellowship at Yale University in Social & Community Psychiatry. Dr. Romanos moved to Palm Beach Gardens, FL in 1974 with his then wife, Jean Tabak Romanos, and had three children, William “B.J.” III, Marie and Michael. Dr. Romanos started a private practice and maintained it in Jupiter, Florida for over 40 years. While maintaining his private practice, he also served as medical director of several local area hospitals, including St. Mary’s Institute of Mental Health, Savannas Hospital, and the Psychiatric Pavilion at Humana Hospital of the Palm Beaches. Dr. Romanos was very active in our community serving as President of the Palm Beach Medical Society, and on the Board of Directors of Jupiter Hospital, Palm Beach Mental Health Association, Kiwanis Club of Martin County, Economic Council, North Palm Beach Exchange Club, and the Forum Club. He also served on the State Legislative Committee for the Florida Medical Association. Dr. Romanos was awarded the Distinguished Life Fellow from the American Psychiatric Society and the Exceptional Physician Award. In 1990, Bill married the love of his life, Geraldine “Geri” Irelan. They were happily married for 26 years. Dr. Romanos was known for the compassion he showed his patients, and for his love of life. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed singing, playing the piano, and spending time with his family and friends. Bill will be greatly missed by his wife, children, colleagues, and friends. He is survived by his wife Geri; his children, William J. Romanos, III, Marie (Preston) Sizemore, and Michael Romanos; his grandchildren Emma, Sophia, and Jacob; his step child Laura (Steve) Beluscsak; step grandchildren Charlene (Jason) Zigrand and Geriann Beluscsak; and his sister Maryann (Perry) Foster.

I. Charles Feldman ’57

FeldmanI. Charles Feldman, of Shavertown passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.

Charles was born in Wilkes-Barre on March 29, 1938, the son of the late Samuel Feldman and Rebecca Leibman Feldman.

He attended Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School, and graduated from The Williston Academy in Easthampton, Mass., and was a dedicated alumnus to both schools throughout his life. Charles donated to the Annual Fund at Williston for 57 consecutive years!  He was also a proud and loyal alumnus of Middlebury College in Vermont, where he took great pleasure in wrestling, debate, the Snow Bowl, and fraternity life as a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon.
