Daily Announcements from Williston Northampton

Teller Chorus Starts Tuesday

Hello Williston Community!

I wanted to let you all know that Teller Chorus, Williston’s mixed-gender chorus, will begin meeting this Tuesday night, September 22, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Reed 213! This chorus is open to anyone, students and faculty, and no previous singing experience is required! All you need is a desire to sing and a great attitude to work hard. We have a lot of fun and are singing some great pieces this year, including one many of you probably are familiar with!

Do know that regular Tuesday night attendance is required to be a part of this club, so consider the time commitment before you arrive. Please arrive at 6:15 p.m. to get music and find a seat, as we will start promptly at 6:30 p.m.

I hope to see many of you there! E-mail me back with any questions or concerns you might have.

It’s a New Year!!

Just a reminder for those of you who are planning to take the October 24 ACT at Williston, the deadline to register is this Thursday, September 18. Please go to www.actstudent.org if you would like to register and have not already done so.

The deadline has passed for the October 3 SATs we host here at Williston, but the next administration of the SAT after that is November 7, with a registration deadline of October 9. To register for the November 7 SAT, you can go to www.sat.collegeboard.org to register.

I hope you are all settling into classes okay! My office is in Plimpton Hall (College Counseling) so stop by if you have questions, email, or call.

Writing Center Hours This Week: GREEN WEEK 9/14-9/20

Happy Sunday and thank you for the great energy today at the orientations and at assembly!  We are very excited to get started at the Writing Center.  And guess what?  The Writing Center is having its 10th Anniversary…maybe not quite as impressive as 175, but we’re still thrilled.  We have a big pile of writing fun planned for you, so get ready!

In the meantime, here are the Writing Center hours for this week (these hours will expand and become more exact after the tutors are trained on the 22nd):

During the day:

Come visit us!  If it is not periods A, E, or F, I am likely to be there.  If you know you need to meet at a specific time, just email me and we will set something up.

During the night:

We are open every night for evening study hall from 7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.  Isn’t that fabulous?!?  Also, Ms. Mantegna and Mr. Cheney are joining me this year for the evening hours.  Isn’t that even MORE fabulous?!?

Some reminders:

ANYONE can use the Writing Center!

Your question can be BIG (“Please help me improve this summer reading paper!  It’s horrible and I’m freaking out!”) or small (“Can you decipher my teacher’s scrawl on page four?”).

You DO NOT need an appointment!  Later, we will have a fancy sign-up system which you can use if that’s your thing.  We love it when people drop by.

The Writing Center is on the second floor of the library.  There is a candy jar.

EVERYONE benefits from help with writing.

The tutors are nice people.

You will not be the only one going to the Writing Center.  We see over 1,000 visits each year.  Why not you?

That’s all for now, except a big “thank you” in advance to my tireless tutors!

You’re all going to be great tomorrow.  Remember: “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Experiment in International Living Blogs

The Experiment in International Living offers Williston Northampton students scholarships, made possible through the generosity of an alumna. Williston students have visited countries including Ecuador, France, and Spain.  Each year, a representative from the program also speaks at assembly about travel and scholarship opportunities and previous student participants share their experiences.

This summer, student participants Calvin Ticknor-Swanson ’16  and Billy Ashenden ’17, are also sharing their travel stories through the Experiment in International Living blogs. Find the full blog list here: http://www.experiment.org/read-our-blogs/

Fitness Center Closed in August

Starting Monday, August 10, the Fitness Center will be closed so equipment can be moved out, the floor can be replaced, the mirrors removed, the entire space painted, and new weight lifting equipment installed.  The work is expected to take about one month.  The Fitness Center will re-open on Monday, September 7.

We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we are sure these improvements will be of great benefit for our students when they arrive back on campus in September.
