Miriam L. Shane, 84, of South Salem, NY, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. She was the loving wife of Mr. Arthur F. Shane.

Mrs. Shane was born on September 9, 1932 in Berlin, Germany; a daughter of the late William and Margery (Tyler) Lind.

A resident of South Salem, NY for the past 24 years since relocating from Pleasantville, NY, Mrs. Shane was previously a deacon at the South Salem Presbyterian Church. She was also a naturalist for the Teatown Lake Reservation of Ossining, NY. In her spare time, Mrs. Shane was an avid dancer and pianist and enjoyed exercise.

Mrs. Shane is survived by her husband of 60 years, Arthur and their children: Hugh Shane and his wife, Miriam; Benjamin Shane and Jennifer Shane Medina. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Nadine, Rebecca, Vivian and Hazel Shane; Juliette and William Medina and Dustin and Collin Shane. In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, Mrs. Shane is survived by a sister, Carol Dickey.

August “Ted” Lindquist ’51

LindquistA.T. “Ted” Lindquist, Jr., 84, of Farmington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 24th, surrounded by his loving family at The Residence at Brookside in Avon, CT.

He was the widower of Audrey Arnold Lindquist. Born in New Britain, CT on October 5, 1931, Ted was the son of the late A.T. Lindquist, Sr., and Marion Viall Lindquist.

He graduated from New Britain High School in 1949 and attended Williston Academy of Easthampton, MA before entering Bates College in 1951.

H. Clark Island ’51

150x172-3710025Clark Island, 82, of Hobe Sound, Florida passed away peacefully on September 17, 2015 at Amore Dementia Care in Stuart, Florida surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne, his sons, David and his wife Tracy , Curt and his wife Erin, his daughter Lynn Shouse and her husband David; and his grandchildren , Kristen, Steven, Emily, Bobby, Matthew, Olivia, Jack and Phoebe. He was Uncle Clark to three nieces and a nephew.

Clark was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended Williston Academy and Meriden High School and he is a graduate of General Motors Institute (now known as Kettering University) with a mechanical engineering degree. Lieutenant Island served in the US Navy as a Navigator on P2V’s. Following his military service he worked as a sales representative in the ball bearing and stamped metal parts industries in Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York and ultimately Connecticut.

Clark began a second career in selling long term care insurance that covered a span of 20 years and moved to Florida in 2001.

Clark has served in the M.W. Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Connecticut for 50 years. Additionally, he served with the Acacia Lodge in Stuart Florida for the past 14 years and was active in the Republican Party.

Without a doubt, Clark’s deepest passion was singing. He participated over most of his lifetime in school choirs, church choirs, the Society of Barbershop Singing in America (via the Big Apple Chorus in NY) and more recently the Treasure Coast Community Singers in Stuart, Florida.

Edwin Anderson, Jr ’51

Edwin Anderson Jr. '51Edwin N. Anderson, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Life Care Center of Wilbraham.

Born March 6, 1933, son of the late Edwin and Lelia (Conger) Anderson, Sr., he lived in Westfield for the past twenty years.

Edwin graduated from Williston Academy and was also a graduate of Amherst College, Class of 1956, having played for the college baseball team. In 1958 Edwin, a member of Tau Beta Pi, graduated Magna Cum Laude from UMass-Amherst Graduate School, finishing first in his civil engineering class. He received the Sloan Foundation Fellow at Purdue University in 1960.

Edwin was a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York and a member of ASCE and NSPE. He was principal structural engineer for the building of eighty buildings in Springfield and Boston, mainly with the former McClintock and Craig firm, where he was a partner. He then was a project engineer for General Electric Co. in Pittsfield for nineteen years, retiring in 1993. In his younger days he was a Tri County All-League outfielder with the Buick Aces and Six Corners Café.

Among the most important things in his life were his family, friends, and education. Edwin is survived by his three loving children, Kurt E. Anderson and his wife Katy, Karl F. Anderson and his wife Debbie, and Heather J. Anderson; three cherished grandchildren, Brian Anderson, Jessica Anderson and Kayla Anderson; and a sister, Paula Bothfeld and her husband Hank.

H. Tucker Machette ’51

H. Tucker Machette died at home surrounded by his family on March 7, 2015 at 7:43 pm.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Terry Wingate Machette; his children Marc and Liz Machette, Piper and James Sleight, Jill Wooldridge and seven grandchildren Morgan, Deven, Sawyer, Wyatt, Penn, Tucker and Gabby.

Tucker was born on June 6, 1932 in White Plains, NY. He attended Williston Academy before graduating from Pleasantville H.S. and went on to play football at Lehigh University where he earned a B.S. in 1959.

He worked as a National Sales Manager at ITT Rayonier until retirement.

Tucker was a man of broad interests and many of his passions live on in his family. An accomplished skier, he was a member of the National Ski Patrol; every summer weekend he could be found on his beloved sailboats. He loved camping in Maine with family, dining out for a fine meal, baking elaborate desserts, EVERY one of his dogs and cats, renovating his 1884 house, UConn Women’s basketball, and telling irreverent stories.

John Burke, Jr. ’51

BurkeJohn Burke, Jr. born October 12, 1927, passed away peacefully at the NY State Veteran’s Home at Montrose, NY on Monday, January 6, 2014. 

John was born in Holyoke, MA, and graduated from Holyoke High School before entering the US Navy. Following his honorable discharge John attended Williston Academy before enrolling at Columbia University graduating in 1995. He was employed by Columbia until his retirement.

He continued to be active working for the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) before it moved to Washington,, DC. He also worked for the New York Times Election Polling Department as a researcher for the CBS News Election & Survey Unit, and he had a plant store called “Green Pastures” on 111th and Amsterdam. He could always be found in the neighborhood of Broadway and 112th Street where he was known by many as the “Mayor of Broadway”.

He is survived by his four nieces and nephews and their families. He is also survived by his “NY family – the Lashers” who cared for John in his last years.
