Mary Elizabeth Doble Canterbury ’43

Mary Elizabeth Doble Canterbury '43Mary Elizabeth Doble Canterbury of Palm City FL, formerly of Hingham, MA, died May 22, 2015 at the age of 91.

Betty was born in Quincy, MA, and was raised in Hingham, MA, she graduated from Northampton School for Girls in 1943.

She married William B. Canterbury on December 24, 1946. Betty and Bill raised their family in Hingham and moved to Stuart, Florida in 1975. Betty was predeceased by her husband and her parents William H. Doble, Jr. and Elizabeth Gilman Doble, and a sister Sally Doble McKenny.

She is survived by her children Gay (Fritz) Blaicher ’61 of Vero Beach, FL; Nancy (Tony) Miller ’66 of Wilmington, NC and Samuel Canterbury ’76 of Sarasota, FL. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ann Doble Abbey ’44 of Georgetown, CO.

Dr. Marilyn Mailman Segal ’44

Marilyn Mailman Segal '44DR. MARILYN (MICKEY) MAILMAN SEGAL, professor of human development and renowned specialist in infant and toddler development passed away on November 19, 2014.

To her children Betty Bardige (Art), Wendy Masi (Nick), Richard Segal (Monica), Patti Lieberman (Bruce), and Debbie Segal, she was a continual source of inspiration, the guiding light of the A.L. Mailman Family Foundation. To her 13 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild, she was a loving and playful presence.

She founded the first Head Start in Broward County and the first inclusion preschool. As one of the first PhD recipients at Nova Southeastern University, she went on to establish several NSU programs including an online doctorate in Early Childhood Education, the University School (Pre-K-12) and the Family Center, today referred to as the Mailman Segal Center for Human Development. She was a Trustee of University of Miami and served on the Board of Zero to Three.

Author of 17 books and countless articles, Mickey was a tireless and visionary advocate for children. She was beloved by many as a teacher, mentor, colleague and friend.

Jean Harmon Baker ’33

Jean Harmon Baker, age 100, passed away in Catonsville, MD on April 15, 2015.

Born in Yonkers, NY, she attended The Northampton School for Girls and worked for Exxon where she met her late husband, Harold Jay Baker.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son James, daughter Mary Ellen, 4 brothers, 2 sisters and her parents.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Amy Baker Lohr (James) and grandchildren Kristin Jean Lohr and Susannah Baker Lohr.

Deborah Saybolt Merker ’55

SayboltDeborah Saybolt Merker, “Debby” of Haverford, PA, age 78, died unexpectedly in an automobile accident in Cleveland, Tennessee on April 10th.

Beloved wife of 53 years of James J. Merker and loving Mother of Lisa and (John) Allen and Jenny and (Bart) Anthony. She is survived by grandchildren, Tyler Conway and Caroline Hayes Allen and is the sister of Peter M. Saybolt and Janet S. Bowers. Debby was the daughter of W.D. and Marion Saybolt of Haverford, PA.

Debby attended Baldwin School and graduated from Williston Northampton School; attended Brown University and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.

Debby was a stewardess for Eastern Airlines in the 60s. She later joined her husband’s firm, Merker Associates, as a partner.

She was an active member of St. Christopher’s Church of Gladwyne and a long time dedicated member of the choir. One of Debby’s great passions was her love for animals, especially her dogs. She also loved art, design and music. She was an avid gardener. Her generosity and kindness were legendary.

Dr. Elizabeth Andrew ’68

Elizabeth Andrew '68Dr. Elizabeth M. Andrew, 64, a Memphis pediatrician for 23 years, died at home on Monday, April 6th after a courageous battle with cancer.

In addition to being a strong advocate for children and adolescents and their health and wellbeing, Beth was an avid gardener,  a long-time member of the Memphis Symphony Chorus and an accomplished photographer, knitter and runner. Beth competed in road races across the country, completing numerous half and full marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2006.

Joan Penfield Begg ’45

PennfieldJoan Farist Penfield Begg, formerly of Trumbull and Falls Village, died peacefully November 13, 2014 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford, CT at the age of 87.

Born in Bridgeport, CT on March 1, 1927 to Joel Farist Penfield and Ethel Logan Penfield., she was a longtime resident of the Nichols section of Trumbull, CT and Falls Village, CT.

She graduated from Northhampton School for Girls, Endicott College and earned a B.S. in Dental Hygiene from the University of Bridgeport. She has been a Member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Nichols, CT for nearly sixty years, a member of Salisbury Arsenal Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Associate member Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter, Milford, CT, The National Society Colonial Dames XVII, the Winthrop Fleet Chapter, Salisbury, CT, Past President National Society Magna Carta Dames, National Society Daughters of American Colonists, CT Chapter.

Nancy Day Trowern ’48

DayFormer Grosse Pointe Park resident Nancy Trowern, 84, died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015, under hospice care at her home in Silver Spring, Md. She was surrounded by her husband, Howard “Joe” Trowern, their four children and her longtime caretaker, Rosario Martinez.

She was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Yonkers, N.Y., to Lt. Gen. and Mrs. Karl S. Day. She lived in Coronado, Calif., before moving to East Williston, N.Y., when she was 8. She attended the Northampton School for Girls in Massachusetts and Goucher College in Baltimore.

When she returned to East Williston, she met a 20-year-old backyard neighbor who had just returned from the war in Europe. In exchange for a ride to the beach, she offered to help him wash his car. That was the last car Joe Trowern ever washed. The couple married June 23, 1951.

Mary Thompson Buczko ’66

BuczkoMary E. (Thompson) Buczko, 67, of Chauncey Walker St., died on January 1, 2015 in the Hospice of the Fisher Home.

She was born November 25, 1947 in Northampton, MA, daughter of Esmond and Virginia (Gay) Thompson.

She lived in Belchertown since, 1987 and previously lived in Chicopee.

Mary worked as a Registered Nurse for The Association for Community Living. Mary was a communicant of St. Francis Church, and enjoyed traveling with her church friends.

She will be missed by her two daughters, Melissa A. Sulikowski and husband Kevin of Chicopee and Bethany Buczko and her partner Courtney Hause of Port Orange, FL. She also leaves her beloved granddaughter Isabella Sulikowski, sister Marjorie Newton and husband Richard of Charleston, RI and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Buczko.

Patricia Schneider ’68

Patricia J. Schneider, 64, died Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH after a brief battle with lung cancer.

She was born June 24, 1950 in Reading, PA the daughter of Frank W. and Lavona (DeWald) Schneider. She attended Northampton School for Girls and graduated from Cortland High School in Cortland, NY class of 1968. She attended Bay Path College and graduated from Windham College in Putney, VT class of 1974. She worked for a time at the Ski Area’s of New York and has spent the Past fifteen years at Fine Paints of Europe in Woodstock, VT.

Patsy was instrumental in the development of the Watson Upper Valley Dog Park in Hartford, and has continued to steer its direction as an active member of the Upper Valley Dog Park Supporters and presiding as its president. She also enjoyed skiing in the winter and kayaking in the summer. But what she loved the most was the time spent out with her dog.

She is predeceased by her parents.

Patsy is survived by her brother Lawrence Schneider of Killington, VT, a sister Sandy Kutkiewicz of Roxbury, NY; several nieces and nephews; and Nathan, a large black Newfoundland.
