A fantastic video of Edward Frenkel, author of Love and Math (a fantastic book!), was just put online that I think is well worth watching.
In the video he answers the question, “Why do people hate mathematics?” along with many others.
What about you? Why do you think people hate mathematics? Let me know in the comments of this post.
Great video! I think one of the reasons people shy away from math is that it’s not always immediately clear whether an idea is “right” until either a dead end or a resolution is found, so there’s a constant anxiety towards being totally wrong and having to start over. It’s also tough to make it tangible until you get to the more advanced stuff. Even then, it’s tricky to develop a personal connection to x and y. What I like is that I’m untangling a real solution to something I can visualize using logic and resourcefulness alone. That’s pretty cool.
